  • Läsning och motivation i årskurs 6 och 9: elevers syn på läspraktiker i och utanför skolan.

    •  Läsförmågan hos elever i den svenska grundskolan är långt under vad den var 20 år sedan, samtidigt som fritidsläsandet fortsätter att minska. Skolan har därför ett viktigt kompensatoriskt uppdrag då vi vet att det krävs rikligt med läsning för att bli en god läsare (Kuhn & Stahl, 2003). Elever behöver också läsa olika typer av texter för att utveckla ordförrådet inom olika ämnen (Biemiller, 2001). Dessutom måste elever kunna läsa längre texter för att utveckla kunskap genom läsning (Topping et al., 2007; Merisuo-Storm & Soininen, 2014). Forskning visar också att längden läsning i skolan och på fritiden korrelerar positivt med läsförmågan (Taylor et al., 1990). Studien utgår från självbestämmandeteorin (SDT) vilken betonar att typen av motivation är viktigare än mängden motivation (Ryan & Deci, 2000). Ju mer autonomt reglerad elevers motivation är, desto bättre är förutsättningarna för att de ska vilja läser mer. Forskning har visat på ett rekursivt samband mellan autonom motivation och synen på den egna läsförmågan (Guthrie & Wigfield, 2000). Syftet är att visa på relationen mellan hur mycket eleverna läser och deras motivation till läsning, attityd till läsning och synen på den egna läsförmågan. Följande frågor är i fokus: Hur många sidor sammanhängande text läser elever i årskurs 6 och 9 i svenska, engelska, historia och kemi under en dag i skolan? Vad är elevernas generella attityd till läsning? Vilken motivation uttrycker elever för läsning av skönlitteratur och sakprosa i skolan? Hur ser eleverna på sin egen läsförmåga och skolans såväl som sina egna läspraktiker?  Analyserna bygger på data från 3408 webbaserade elevenkäter från 144 grundskolor i 18 kommuner. Dessutom genomfördes 194 strukturerade elevintervjuer i sex klasser valda utifrån grad av motivation och mängden skolrelaterad läsning. Resultatet visar att elever i årskurs 6 läser mer i skolan än elever i årskurs 9 och att elever i årskurs 6 visar en högre grad av inre motivation än elever i årskurs 9. Elever i årskurs 6 har också en mer positiv attityd till läsning av såväl skönlitterär som sakprosatext än elever i årskurs 9. Analyser pågår gällande relationen mellan hur mycket eleverna läser och deras motivation till läsning i de olika ämnena. Preliminära resultat pekar mot att det finns en potential i elevernas förhållande till läsning som skolan skulle kunna ta tillvara i än högre grad. Studiens storskaliga ansats med både kvantitativa och kvalitativa data bidrar med ny kunskap om skolans läspraktiker och hur dessa förhåller sig till elevers motivation att läsa.

  • Success-factors in transition to university mathematics

    • This study examines different factors' relative importance for students' performance in the transition to university mathematics. Students' characteristics (motivation, actions and beliefs) were measured when entering the university and at the end of the first year. Principal component analysis revealed four important constructs: Self-efficacy, Motivation type, Study habits and Views of mathematics. Subsequently, orthogonal partial least squares (OPLS) analysis was used for measuring the constructs' ability to predict students' university mathematics grades. No individual constructs measured at the time of entrance predicted more than 5% of the variation. On the other hand, jointly they predicted 14%, which is almost in pair with upper secondary grades predicting 17%. Constructs measured at the end of the first year were stronger predictors, jointly predicting 37% of the variation in university grades, with Self-efficacy (21%) and Motivation (12%) being the two strongest individual predictors. In general, Study habits were not important for predicting university achievement. However, for students with low upper secondary grades, the textbook and interaction with peers, rather than internet-based resources, contributed positively to achievement. The association between Views of mathematics and performance was weak for all groups and non-existing for students with low grades.

  • Profiling School Students' Epistemic Beliefs From Grades 5 to 12

    • Individual’s beliefs about the nature of knowing and learning have been investigated under the label of epistemic beliefs. Although the area of epistemic beliefs is still growing, only a few studies deal with school children. A valuable research approach in this area is classifying students in more homogeneous groups according as it is done in Latent Profil Analyses. Therefore, we investigated 3088 secondary students across grades 5 to 12 with LTAs. We found three distinctive profiles (‘sophisticated’, ‘evidence-based/dynamic’, ‘multiplist’) according to students’ science-related epistemic beliefs. As a justification for this approach, results show several differences between these profiles regarding school and background variables, cognitive outcomes in general and in science as well as science related motivational characteristics.

  • Students’ epistemic beliefs in Sweden and Germany : Correlations with classroom characteristics

    • The study aims at describing students’ epistemic beliefs over school years 5–11, investigating differences between Sweden and Germany regarding the ‘trajectories’ of epistemic beliefs over the grades, and if classroom factors can explain these differences. A cross-sectional survey, covering grades 5–11, was distributed to 1501 students in Sweden and 2839 in Germany to assess their epistemic beliefs and perceived classroom environment in chemistry. Factor analysis revealed four valid constructs for students’ epistemic beliefs and perceived classroom environment, respectively.  A common trend for both countries was an increasing sophistication over grades as to the Certainty of knowledge and an emphasis in all grades on the need for evidence from several sources to make claims of knowing (Justification). Trust in authorities decreased over the grades in Germany, while Swedish students showed similar levels in all grades. Beliefs in dynamic and changing knowledge was strong in both countries, with an increasing trend in Germany while stable in Sweden. Significant correlations between epistemic beliefs and perceived classroom environment were found in both countries, but stronger in Sweden than Germany

    • In the field of epistemic belief research, more studies on how these beliefs are formed in different cultural contexts are called for. Moreover, there are strong assumptions that teachers’ instructional practices are paramount to the development of students’ epistemic beliefs. The current study aims at investigating differences between Sweden and Germany in both, and in their relationships. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 4,731 students in Grades 5 through 11. To sum up, latent multi group comparison revealed several differences in the level of students’ beliefs and classroom characteristics. Moreover, latent regression analyses showed that the observed classroom characteristics were significant predictors of students’ beliefs concerning the justification and development of knowledge, and that the prediction pattern differ between countries.

  • Computational problem solving in university physics education : Students’ beliefs, knowledge, and motivation

    • Solving physics problem in university physics education with a computational approach requires knowledge and skills in several domains, for example, physics, mathematics, programming, and modelling. These competences are in turn related to students' beliefs about these domains as well as about learning, and their motivation to learn. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the role of university physics students' knowledge, beliefs and motivation when solving and visualizing a physics problem using a computational approach. The results showed that expert-like beliefs about physics and learning physics together with prior knowledge were important predictors of the quality of performance. Feelings corresponding to control and concentration, i.e., emotions that are expected to be good indicators of students' motivation were also good predictors of performance. However, intrinsic motivation, as indicated by enjoyment and interest, together with beliefs expressing students' personal interest and utility value, did not predict performance to any higher extent. Instead, my results indicate that integration and identification of expert-like beliefs about learning and concentration and control emotions during learning are more influential on the quality of performance. Thus, the results suggest that the development of students' epistemological beliefs is important for students' ability to learn from realistic problem-solving situations with many degrees of freedom in physics education. In order to investigate knowledge and beliefs structures network modeling has been applied as a novel tool for analysis. Students' epistemic frames are analyzed before and after the task in computational physics using a network analysis approach on interview transcripts, producing visual representations of mental models. The results show that students change their epistemic framing from a modelling task, with expectancies about learning programming, to a physics task, in which they are challenged to use physics principles and conservation laws in order to troubleshoot and understand their simulations. This implies that the task, even though it is not introducing any new physics, helped the students to develop a more consistent view of the importance of using physics principles in problem solving. When comparing students' framing with teachers,' it is shown that although teachers and students agree on the main features of simulation competence in physics, differences in their epistemic networks can be distinguished. For example, while teachers believe that numerical problem solving facilitates fundamental understanding of physics and mathematics, this is not obvious to students. This implies that university teachers need to be aware of these differences as well as students' beliefs in order to challenge students' expectations and to give support concerning the learning objectives of the assignment.

    • Numerical problem solving in classical mechanics in university physics education offers a learning situation where students have many possibilities of control and creativity. In this study, expertlike beliefs about physics and learning physics together with prior knowledge were the most important predictors of the quality of performance of a task with many degrees of freedom. Feelings corresponding to control and concentration, i.e., emotions that are expected to trigger students’ intrinsic motivation, were also important in predicting performance. Unexpectedly, intrinsic motivation, as indicated by enjoyment and interest, together with students’ personal interest and utility value beliefs did not predict performance. This indicates that although a certain degree of enjoyment is probably necessary, motivated behavior is rather regulated by integration and identification of expertlike beliefs about learning and are more strongly associated with concentration and control during learning and, ultimately, with high performance. The results suggest that the development of students’ epistemological beliefs is important for students’ ability to learn from realistic problem-solving situations with many degrees of freedom in physics education.

    • Although a whole school approach (WSA) to sustainability has been described as one of the most meaningful education approaches, the concept of WSA has not yet been widely explored within the context of preschool education, where the play, learning, and care are preconditions for a wholeness in childhood. The concept of the WSA considers raising quality and standard across entire education institution (Henderson & Tilbury, 2004). This approach also emphasizes the needs for (pre)school to engage children, teachers, parents, and the wider community in sustainability (Mogren, Gericke & Scherp, 2019). The principals have important roles to play in reforming and prioritizing preschools activities towards sustainability (Borg & Vinterek, 2020). This paper explores 50 principals’ views and attitudes towards sustainability from a WSA perspective. Using randomized sampling, the principals were selected from 25 eco-certified and 25 non-eco-certified preschools in 25 municipalities in Sweden, out of 290. A questionnaire was utilized to collect demographic information about the preschools, number of children, number of qualified teachers, principals’ attitudes towards preschool’s activities with sustainability, and also an open-ended question about how the principals themselves integrate sustainability in their planning of preschool activities and what they actually do. The qualitative data was analyzed by using Wals and Mathie’s (2022) six component Whole School Approach Flower Model. The components are: 1. Vision, ethos, leadership and coordination; 2. Institutional practices; 3. Pedagogy and learning; 4. Curriculum; 5. Community connections; and 6. Capacity building. The components were adapted and operationalized within a preschool context. The quantitative data was analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA) in the SIMCA statistical software (Umetrics 2020). This study is a part of a project, “Eco-certified preschools and children’s learning for sustainability: Researching holistic outcomes of preschool education for sustainability (HOPES)” (Swedish Research Council, Dnr. 2018-04445).
