  • Applications of the European Parkinson's Disease Association sponsored Parkinson's Disease Composite Scale (PDCS)
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: NPJ Parkinson's disease. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2373-8057. ; 5, s. 26-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study was addressed to determine the presence of Parkinson disease (PD) manifestations, their distribution according to motor subtypes, and the relationships with health-related quality of life (QoL) using the recently validated European Parkinson’s Disease Association sponsored Parkinson’s Disease Composite Scale (PDCS). Frequency of symptoms was determined by the scores of items (present if >0). Using ROC analysis and Youden method, MDS-UPDRS motor subtypes were projected on the PDCS to achieve a comparable classification based on the PDCS scores. The same method was used to estimate severity levels from other measures in the study. The association between the PDCS and QoL (PDQ-39) was analyzed by correlation and multiple linear regression. The sample consisted of 776 PD patients. We found that the frequency of PD manifestations with PDCS and MDS-UPDRS were overlapping, the average difference between scales being 5.5% only. Using the MDS-UPDRS subtyping, 215 patients (27.7%) were assigned as Tremor Dominant (TD), 60 (7.7%) Indeterminate, and 501 (64.6%) Postural Instability and Gait Difficulty (PIGD) in this cohort. With this classification as criterion, the analogous PDCS-based ratio provided these cut-off values: TD subtype, ≥1.06; Indeterminate, <1.06 but >0.65; and PIGD, <0.65. The agreement between the two scales on this classification was substantial (87.6%; kappa = 0.69). PDCS total score cut-offs for PD severity were: 23/24 for mild/moderate and 41/42 for moderate/severe. Moderate to high correlations (r = 0.35–0.80) between PDCS and PDQ-39 were obtained, and the four PDCS domains showed a significant independent influence on QoL. The conclusions are: (1) the PDCS assessed the frequency of PD symptoms analogous to the MDS-UPDRS; (2) motor subtypes and severity levels can be determined with the PDCS; (3) a significant association between PDCS and QoL scores exists.

  • Electronic structure of the dilute magnetic semiconductor Ga1-xMnxP from hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 97:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated the electronic structure of the dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) Ga0.98Mn0.02P and compared it to that of an undoped GaP reference sample, using hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HXPS) and hard x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (HARPES) at energies of about 3 keV. We present experimental data, as well as theoretical calculations, to understand the role of the Mn dopant in the emergence of ferromagnetism in this material. Both core-level spectra and angle-resolved or angle-integrated valence spectra are discussed. In particular, the HARPES experimental data are compared to free-electron final-state model calculations and to more accurate one-step photoemission theory. The experimental results show differences between Ga0.98Mn0.02P and GaP in both angle-resolved and angle-integrated valence spectra. The Ga0.98Mn0.02P bands are broadened due to the presence of Mn impurities that disturb the long-range translational order of the host GaP crystal. Mn-induced changes of the electronic structure are observed over the entire valence band range, including the presence of a distinct impurity band close to the valence-band maximum of the DMS. These experimental results are in good agreement with the one-step photoemission calculations and a prior HARPES study of Ga0.97Mn0.03As and GaAs [Gray et al., Nat. Mater. 11, 957 (2012)], demonstrating the strong similarity between these two materials. The Mn 2p and 3s core-level spectra also reveal an essentially identical state in doping both GaAs and GaP.

  • Distinctive Picosecond Spin Polarization Dynamics in Bulk Half Metals
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 121:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Femtosecond laser excitations in half-metal (HM) compounds are theoretically predicted to induce an exotic picosecond spin dynamics. In particular, conversely to what is observed in conventional metals and semiconductors, the thermalization process in HMs leads to a long living partially thermalized configuration characterized by three Fermi-Dirac distributions for the minority, majority conduction, and majority valence electrons, respectively. Remarkably, these distributions have the same temperature but different chemical potentials. This unusual thermodynamic state is causing a persistent nonequilibrium spin polarization only well above the Fermi energy. Femtosecond spin dynamics experiments performed on Fe3O4 by time- and spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy support our model. Furthermore, the spin polarization response proves to be very robust and it can be adopted to selectively test the bulk HM character in a wide range of compounds.

  • Results of the randomized, placebo-controlled clopidogrel and acetylsalicylic acid in bypass surgery for peripheral arterial disease (CASPAR) trial
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of vascular surgery : official publication, the Society for Vascular Surgery [and] International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery, North American Chapter. - : Elsevier BV. - 0741-5214. ; 52:4, s. 825-833, 833.e1-2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The combination of clopidogrel plus ASA did not improve limb or systemic outcomes in the overall population of PAD patients requiring below-knee bypass grafting. Subgroup analysis suggests that clopidogrel plus ASA confers benefit in patients receiving prosthetic grafts without significantly increasing major bleeding risk.

  • Identifying the Electronic Character and Role of the Mn States in the Valence Band of (Ga,Mn)As
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 111:9, s. 097201-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report high-resolution hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy results on (Ga,Mn)As films as a function of Mn doping. Supported by theoretical calculations we identify, for both low (1%) and high (13%) Mn doping values, the electronic character of the states near the top of the valence band. Magnetization and temperature-dependent core-level photoemission spectra reveal how the delocalized character of the Mn states enables the bulk ferromagnetic properties of (Ga,Mn)As.

  • Spectral hole-burning spectroscopy in Nd3+: YVO4
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - 1098-0121. ; 77:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present spectral hole-burning measurements on the 879 nm, I-4(9/2) -> F-4(3/2) transition in Nd3+ : YVO4. We observe antiholes in the spectrum along with long lived spectral holes, which demonstrates optical pumping between the ground state Zeeman levels. The spectral holes are narrow (homogeneous linewidth of 63 kHz) at 2.1 K with a 300 mT applied magnetic field. We also perform preliminary spectral tailoring in this material by creating a 40 MHz wide transmission window in the inhomogeneous absorption. These results show the potential of the Zeeman levels in Nd doped materials to be used for spectral tailoring for quantum and classical information processing.
