  • A very intense neutrino super beam experiment for leptonic CP violation discovery based on the European spallation source linac
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0550-3213 .- 1873-1562. ; 885, s. 127-149
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Very intense neutrino beams and large neutrino detectors will be needed in order to enable the discovery of CP violation in the leptonic sector. We propose to use the proton linac of the European Spoliation Source currently under construction in Lund, Sweden, to deliver, in parallel with the spoliation neutron production, a very intense, cost effective and high performance neutrino beam. The baseline program for the European Spoliation Source linac is that it will be fully operational at 5 MW average power by 2022, producing 2 GeV 2.86 ms long proton pulses at a rate of 14 Hz. Our proposal is to upgrade the linac to 10 MW average power and 28 Hz, producing 14 pulses/s for neutron production and 14 pulses/s for neutrino production. Furthermore, because of the high current required in the pulsed neutrino horn, the length of the pulses used for neutrino production needs to be compressed to a few mu s with the aid of an accumulator ring. A long baseline experiment using this Super Beam and a megaton underground Water Cherenkov detector located in existing mines 300-600 km from Lund will make it possible to discover leptonic CP violation at 5 sigma significance level in up to 50% of the leptonic Dirac CP-violating phase range. This experiment could also determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a significance level of more than 3 sigma if this issue will not already have been settled by other experiments by then. The mass hierarchy performance could be increased by combining the neutrino beam results with those obtained from atmospheric neutrinos detected by the same large volume detector. This detector will also be used to measure the proton lifetime, detect cosmological neutrinos and neutrinos from supernova explosions. Results on the sensitivity to leptonic CP violation and the neutrino mass hierarchy are presented.

  • EFFECT OF THE FIELD MAPS ON THE BEAM DYNAMICS OF THE ESS DRIFT TUBE LINAC
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: ; , s. 3864-3866
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the beam dynamics design and modelling of the Eu- ropean Spallation Source (ESS) Drift Tube Linac (DTL) simplified models have been used for the focusing and ac- celerating elements. Since the high current requires precise control of the beam to analyze the losses it is useful to per- form the beam dynamics simulations by using accurate field maps of the focusing and accelerating elements. In this pa- per the effects of the 3D-field maps on the beam dynamics of the ESS DTL are presented.

  • Implication of Manufacturing Errors on the Layout of Stabilization System and on the Field Quality in a Drift Tube Linac - RF DTL Error Study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: LINAC16 28th Linear Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501694 ; , s. 290-290
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The field flatness and the layout of the stabilization system in a drift tube linac are strongly dependent on the manufacturing errors that affect the local resonant frequency. In this paper a methodology is presented to study, firstly, the sensitivityof the resonant frequency and of the field flatness to each geometrical parameter of the drift tubes; then a set of tolerances for each parameter is found and a stabilization system layout is defined in order to keep the field flatness within an acceptable limit.

  • Integration of Interfaces and Stabilization System in the Design of a Drift Tube Linac
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: LINAC16 28th Linear Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501694 ; , s. 294-294
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Making an accurate Radio Frequency, RF, design of any accelerating structure is fundamental to ensure that electromagnetic and beam dynamics requirements will be achieved. This is essential for the most complicated accelerating structureslike the Drift Tube Linac, DTL; in this case a meticulous design facilitates the RF commissioning too. In this paper the influence of the interfaces and of the field stabilization system on the RF design is analyzed and an advanced design methodology to mitigate field degradation is presented.

  • ESS Linac Beam Physics Design Update
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: ; , s. 947-950
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Spallation Source, ESS, uses a linear accelerator to bombard the tungsten target with the high intensity protons beam for producing intense beams of neutrons. The nominal average beam power of the linac is 5~MW with a peak beam power at target of 125~MW. This paper focuses on the beam dynamics design of the ESS linac and the diagnostics elements used for the tuning of the lattice and matching between sections.

  • European Spallation Source Lattice Design Status
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: ; , s. 3911-3913
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The accelerator of the European Spallation Source (ESS) will deliver 62.5 mA proton beam of 2.0 GeV onto the target, offering an unprecedented beam power of 5 MW. Since the technical design report (TDR) was published in 2013, work has continued to further optimise the accelerator design. We report on the advancements in lattice design optimisations after the TDR to improve performance and flexibility, and reduce cost of the ESS accelerator

  • Plans for the European Spallation Source Beam Physics Control Software
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: ; , s. 3086-3089
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The commissioning and operations planning for the European Spallation Source is currently being defined. It is foreseen that the ESS will begin to deliver beam on target by mid 2019, something which is urging a well structured and thought through plan both for commissioning and operations. In this paper we will discuss the plans for beam physics operational software, priorities and software services needed during the different stages of beam commissioning.
