  • Corpora and Discourse – and Stuff. Papers in Honour of Karin Aijmer
  • 2009
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Karin Aijmer, Professor of English at the University of Gothenburg in the years 1996–2006, is well known within the linguistic community, especially by virtue of her pioneering research within the domain of pragmatics in a broad sense, where her work in conversation and discourse analysis has played a particularly prominent role. In this work, a cross-linguistic perspective has also informed numerous contributions to translation studies as well as investigations into the language produced by advanced learners of English. Further, a profile of Karin Aijmer’s linguistic credentials would have to include her contributions to corpus linguistics at large, as a discipline in its own right. In this volume, a large number of Karin Aijmer’s wide network of friends and colleagues pay linguistic tribute, each in their own way, to her untiring exploration of some of the mysteries, or miracles, of ordinary, down-to-earth communication. As is readily seen from the table of contents, a fair share of the papers in this festschrift deal with subject matter that is close to her heart, making frequent reference to her work; others provide different perspectives, shedding light on some other areas of language and linguistics. Regardless of content and orientation, however, the contributing authors share a common wish to honour Karin Aijmer for her outstanding work.

  • Language, Football and All That Jazz. A Festschrift for Sölve Ohlander
  • 2013
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is a collection of papers presented to Sölve Ohlander on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Having "Language" as an overriding theme, the contributions span across many aspects of the humanities, reflecting the full width of Sölve Ohlander's scholarly network. The articles are written in English or in Swedish, the ones in Swedish being supplied with summaries in English. Notwithstanding the multifariousness of its content, the book is published by Gothenburg Studies in English, the Acta series of Sölve Ohlander's home department for many years.

  • A proposed method of clarifying the meaning of contentious political-cultural words: The case of country and nation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of English Studies. - : University of Gothenburg - Department of Languages and Literatures. - 1654-6970. ; 15:2, s. 62-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses how linguistic-combinatory methods can be used to add precision to our understanding of contentious words from the political-cultural field. Eleven English authors' use of the words country and nation has been investigated and the focus is placed on two authors who show an especially frequent use of nation relative to country, Shakespeare and Marie Corelli. It is shown that nation tends to select human negative-emotional lexical companions to a higher degree than country, and that this difference between the two words reflects their original etymological meanings. It is proposed that a more developed test design could be fruitfully used on a larger material.

  • An Excursion on Land
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of English Studies. - : University of Gothenburg - Department of Languages and Literatures. - 1654-6970. ; 19:5, s. 262-287
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A fundamental aspect of political language is the words we use for potentially contentious political-cultural concepts, as well as how we use them. This paper investigates the use of the noun land in a small sample of English authors, from Shakespeare to Virginia Woolf, comparing that use to how the same authors use the nouns country and nation, as presented in a previous paper along the same lines. In addition to simple frequencies, the combinatory potential of the noun land is examined. Special attention is paid to the use of land in the works of Shakespeare and Marie Corelli. Land in Shakespeare was shown to have a higher combinatory potential than country, which was ascribed partly to the formal properties of the word, partly to its suitability as part of Shakespeare’s imagery, in the context of the political situation in England in the late sixteenth century. Corelli’s abundant use of land is seen as exaggeratedly symptomatic of Victorian style, which has contributed to the word being stylistically marked in present-day English. A general finding is that land, even when used in a political sense, retains some of its concrete meaning, which may contribute to its rhetorical usefulness.

  • English proficiency and attitude formation in a merged corporation with a Swedish-English profile
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0143-4632 .- 1747-7557. ; 33:2, s. 149-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the relationship between proficiency in English and language-related attitudes among Swedish professionals at the English-speaking AstraZeneca R&D site in Molndal, Sweden. AstraZeneca is the result of a merger between a Swedish and a British pharmaceutical company, and the aim of the study is to see to what extent their relative proficiency in English may be related to attitude formation among Swedish workers in the new corporate setting. The results indicate that there is a correlation between good proficiency in English and a favourable attitude towards the merger and its consequences. The results are interpreted as indicating that subjectively perceived cultural problems in a multinational corporate setting may be a reflection of language deficiencies.

  • How English won the day in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Language, Football and All That Jazz. A Festschrift for Sölve Ohlander / Gunnar Bergh, Rhonwen Bowen & Mats Mobärg (eds.). - Göteborg : Acta Universitatis Gothoburgensis. - 9789173467582 ; , s. 315-329
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The article discusses the expansion of English as an educational language in Sweden during the period 1850-1950 (approx.), suggesting that the main reasons for the success of English can be found in changing educational ideals placing greater emphasis on practical utility; and an early impact from the media, as well as other kinds of extramural influence.

En festskrift för Ingmar Söhrman, professor i romanska språk / Andrea Castro, Anton Granvik, Ester Fernández Incógnito, Sara Lindbladh, Andreas Romeborn, Katharina Vajta (redaktörer). - Göteborg : Göteborgs universitet. Institutionen för språk och litteraturer. - 9789163953613 ; , s. 157-168
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the ongoing change of grammatical gender in the Swedish noun 'öl' ('beer'), from original t gender to n gender, on the basis of data from corpora of literature and daily newspapers. It is shown that the n gender form, which was relatively recently introduced to represent a drinking portion of beer ('a beer'), is in the process of taking over also the mass meaning of the noun, which was originally only neuter (in modern Swedish: t gender).
