  • Relative importance of trophic interactions and nutrient enrichment in seagrass ecosystems: A broad-scale field experiment in the Baltic-Skagerrak area.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Limnology and Oceanography. - 1541-5856. ; 55:3, s. 1435-1448
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interaction of eutrophication and predation in structuring seagrass Zostera marina L. ecosystems was assessed in a field experiment in three regions along an estuarine salinity gradient, from southern Finland to the Skagerrak area of the Swedish west coast. All regions are considered to be affected by eutrophication and overfishing but differ in the abundance of intermediate predators (e.g., small fish, shrimp, and crabs), mesograzers, and the biomass of epiphytic algae. Using transplanted Zostera (eelgrass), nutrient levels and intermediate predator abundance were manipulated in a full-factorial cage experiment. On the Swedish west coast, where ambient densities of mesograzers are very low, epiphytic algae responded strongly to nutrient enrichment, resulting in significantly reduced growth of eelgrass. At the Baltic sites however, where ambient densities of mesograzers are high, no significant growth of epiphytic algae was detected, and only grazer biomass responded to nutrient enrichment. Predation from small fish, shrimp, and crabs decreased the biomass of mesograzers by . 98% on the Swedish west coast, but natural predators had no significant effect on mesograzers biomass at the Baltic sites. Predation and nutrient enrichment interacted to affect the growth of eelgrass by controlling the biomass of mesograzers and nuisance algae. The differing effect of nutrient enrichment and grazing in the three regions may therefore be a result of the prevailing low and high predation pressure on mesograzers in Zostera. This absence or presence of predation may derive from interregional changes in trophic interactions, possibly caused by a combination of eutrophication and overfishing.

  • Claiming the City : Civil Society Mobilisation by the Urban Poor
  • 2014
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Half of the world’s population lives in cities, and a growing proportion – today one billion – lives in ‘slums’ and informal settlements. Many of the urban poor engage in collective strategies to secure their housing, earn a living, and defend their interests. Their claims often conflict with the demands of other urban groups over access to resources, space and power. They also challenge the definitions of urban authorities and city planners regarding which claims are to be seen as legitimate. Thus, the work for change is slow and fraught with difficulties, but nevertheless has seen significant advances across the world. This volume focuses on the informal and formalised networks and associations of urban poor and their significance for strengthening people’s political, social and economic position in the city. The authors are representatives of organisations by urban poor, of organisations working in support of their claims, of urban governments, and scholars. Together they emphatically display how urban poor today are claiming their right to the city.

  • Faith in Civil Society : Religious Actors as Drivers of Change
  • 2013
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Religious associations and communities are increasingly recognised as important social actors across the world, belying common European assumptions of a universal development path of secularisation. The last decades, states have taken a renewed interest in religious associations, an interest reflected as well within international development cooperation. While this has given augmented recognition to the role of religious actors, it has also brought to fore differences in perspectives and values, and raised issues on how to respect – or strive to overcome – these. This volume addresses how religious faith can be a force for social change, where people mobilise around shared identities with spiritual as well as political objectives. Through case studies and analyses from across the world, the volume contributors discuss how faith-based communities manifest themselves as important social actors, and how they deal with sometimes conflicting values and notions of change, within their own communities and in relation to other actors.

  • Global Civil Society : Shifting Powers in a Shifting World
  • 2012
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • What is global civil society, and what role does it play in world politics? Some see grassroots organising transnationally, whereby marginalised groups pres- sure states and corporations towards increased democracy and respect for human rights. Others hold that global civil society actors are instruments in a neo-colonial exercise of power over the global South, serving Northern values and political or economic interests. This volume discusses the multifaceted character of global civil society, constituting a political space where a diversity of actors struggle over values and aims, and where power and resources are unequally distributed. It also addresses how the space changes character with new global actors such as the BRICS countries, and with the waged War on Terror. The volume authors – academics as well as development practitioners – describe civil society actors from across the world and various forms of transnational politics, displaying the complex and sometimes contradictory relations of power that are at play.

  • Socially Engaged Buddhism: Faith‐inspired drivers of social and political change
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Outlook on Civil Society. - 1403-1264.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The global socially engaged Buddhist movement emphasis Buddhism’s engagement with society. It is a socially and politically active form of Buddhism that came into being in the twentieth century. Engaged Buddhism is a non-centralized movement that emerged in response to multiple crises in modern Asia. It has been described as a modern form of Buddhism, influenced by; modern, social, economic, psychological, and political forms of analysis of Western origin. Engaged Buddhism is, in a certain sense, a result of the great tension modern Buddhists have felt between theoretical and idealized concepts and the way these concepts have been used. Buddhism has been portrayed as otherworldly and unconcerned with the welfare of the people. That is an one-sided account that does not acknowledge that the Buddhist institutions at all times have been important actors in society. Buddhism has always been engaged and monks and nuns have been involved with the lay people as teachers, doctors, counsellors, advisers etc. However, the monks’ and the nuns’ roles have shifted over the centuries and in different contexts. Governments have taken over many of the social activities that were traditionally the responsibility of temples and monks. These include education, health care, social work, community support and development.

  • Socially Engaged Buddhism: Faith‐inspired drivers of social and political change

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Socially Engaged Buddhism: Faith‐inspired drivers of social and political change Chair & introduction. Monica Lindberg Falk, Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies, Lund University, Sweden. This session invites paper that address issues related to socially engaged Buddhism. The Buddhist institutions have always been important actors in society; however, the monks’ and the nuns’ roles have shifted over the centuries and in different contexts. The global socially engaged Buddhist movement emphasis Buddhism’s engagement with society. Socially engaged Buddhism is a further development of ‘Engaged Buddhism’, which was a term coined by the Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh in the 1950s to reveal the potential within Buddhism for social activism. The socially engaged Buddhist movement is growing worldwide and covers many different activities for example: social work, poverty-alleviation, ecology and development programs, political activism, and human rights agitation. Socially engaged Buddhism also includes socially engaged Buddhists’ important roles in crises situations. The common unifying component is that people who apply the label to their activities perceive themselves as manifesting Buddhist principles in concrete activities aimed at benefiting people other than themselves, and especially seek to adapt Buddhist principles and practices to contemporary social issues. Dalai Lama and Aung San Suu Kyi are examples of politically important socially engaged Buddhists. In many Asian contexts, new and modern forms of Buddhist practice and beliefs, grounded in the ancient form of Buddhism, continue to emerge. Gender equality is one of the foremost aims of engaged Buddhism. Endeavours such as the struggle undertaken by feminist Buddhists to restore the right of women to receive full ordination connect engaged Buddhism to the global struggle for gender equality.
