  • Cross-cultural validation of the Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire (ESCQ)
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Psicologia. - : Edições Colibri. - 0874-2049. ; 20:2, s. 95-127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the cross-cultural validation of the Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire (ESCQ), which consists of 45 items divided into three subscales – (i) perceiving and understanding emotion (PU), (ii) expressing and labelling emotion (EL), and (iii) managing and regulating emotion (MR) – and is classified as a “trait emotional intelligence” or “perceived emotional intelligence” measure.Originally, it was developed in Croatian settings using a theoretical framework from the emotional intelligence model (Mayer & Salovey, 1997), but it has already been translated into English and presented in 2001 at the 7th European Congress of Psychology in London. The psychometric qualities and the relations of ESCQ with several relevant constructs in Croatian, Portuguese, Finnish, Swedish, Slovene, Spanish, and Japanese contexts are here presented, using target samples of mainly high school and university students, as well as older subjects (workers and supervisors), highlighting construct, convergent, divergent and concurrent validity. However, the Cronbach alpha of the MRscale needs improvement, stressing the need to further pursue the validity studies of the ESCQ.

  • A note on information processing in cross-modal matching
  • 1975
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Garvill, J., and Molander, B. A note on information processing in cross-modal matching. Umeå Psychological Re-.ports No. 95, 1975. - Intra-modal and cross-modal matching of farm was studied. The hypothesis that differences in accuracy between modality conditions found in earlier experiments were due to differences in rate of information pick-up between the visual and tactual modalities was tested. The modality conditions were visual standard or tactual standard and visual comparison or tactual comparison. The subjfects made paired comparisons of three-dimensional "nonsense" objects and were allowed to inspect the stimili for as long as they wanted. The time was measured for the standard object and the comparison object. It was found that the visual modality had a higher rate of information pick-up tharij the tactual modality. However, the differences in accuracy between the modality conditions were not eliminated despite the differences in presentation time. Other possible explanations of the differences in accuracy are discussed.

  • A note on the relation between cross-modal transfer of learning and cross-modal matching
  • 1977
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Garvill, J., and Molander, B. A note on the relation between cross-modal transfer of learning and cross-modal matching. Umeå Psychological Reports No. 126, 1977. - Cross-modal transfer of learning was studied in a paradigm that closely parallels the one used for studying intra-modal and cross-modal Hatching. The hypotheses that (1) the asymmetric transfer effects found in studies of cross-modal transfer of learning and in studies of intra-modal and eros s-modal Hatching are compatible and (2) that they can be explained in terms of differences in information processing capacity between the visual and the tactual modality were tested. The results supported the hypotheses. It was also found that the amount of cross-modal transfer as well as the asymmetry of transfer are affected by letting the subjects practice the transfer task on each trial.

  • Effects of interference on intra-modal and cross-modal matching of form
  • 1977
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Garvill, J., and Molander, B. Effects of interference on intra-modal and cross-modal matching of form. Umeå Psychological Reports No. 124, 1977. - This experiment was designed to test two hypotheses concerning differential memory for visually and tactually acquired information in intranodal and cross-modal matching of form. The intra-modal conditions were VV (visual standard, visual comparison)and TT (tactual standard, tactual comparison). The cross-modal conditions were VT (visual standard tactual comparison) and TV (tactual standard, visual comparison). Between the standard stimulus and comparison stimulus either an unfilled interval or a visual matching task or a tactual matching task was interpolated. The first hypothesis suggests that the memory traces for tactually acquired information are less stable than those for visually acquired information and thus more sensitive to interference. According to the second hypothesis there are modality specific memory storages and the information acquired are coded and stored in the memory for the comparison modality. This hypothesis predicts interference only when the interfering task is presented in the same modality as the comparison stimulus. The results gave clear evidence of interference. However, the interference effects were the same regardless of standard modality, comparison modality or kind of interference. Thus, the results suggest a common form of storage for visual and tactual information.

  • Intra-modal and cross-modal accuracy in a form discrimination task
  • 1969
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Garvill,J., and Malandar, B. Intra-modal and cross-mcxåal accuracy in a farm discrimination task* thieå Psychological Reports, No, 11, 1969. - Intra-modal and cross-modal d iscrimnation was compared under two kinds of presentation either simultaneous ar successive. The modalities were vision and touch and the stimili three-dixrensicoal "nonsense" objects. The intta-modal conditions were expected to result in higher accuracy than the croBSHBßdal ocndit&ans. The asymmetric transfer effect (i.e. touch before vision better than vision before touch) usually found in experiments on cross-modal transfer, but not in experiments cai cross-modal matching, was expected to occur under the condition of successive presentation at least. Hie method was paired comparisons and the results showed higher aoeuraoy fee the intra-modal conditions as ccrapared to the cross-modal conditions. The expected asymmetric effect was not found. Differences between experiments cai cross-mcdal transfer and experiments en cross-modal matching are discussed.

  • Episodic memory in adult age and effects of sibship size and birth order : Longitudinal data
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Adult Development. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1068-0667 .- 1573-3440. ; 14:1/2, s. 37-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examined the effects of sibship size and birth order on episodic memory performance in adulthood and old age. Participants were 1,141 healthy individuals aged 35-80 years, who took part in a longitudinal project on age, health, and memory. Episodic memory measurements over a 5-year interval included tests of recognition (recognition of faces, family names, first names, and nouns) and tests of recall (free recall of sentences, free recall and cued recall of nouns, and recall of activities). Results showed significant effects for both recall and recognition, that is, the smaller the sibship size is for an individual and the earlier born, the better memory performance. These results demonstrate that the effects of sibship size and birth order previously shown in children and adolescents (Belmont and Marolla, Science 182:1096-1101, 1973; Zajonc and Markus, Psych Rev 82:74-88, 1975; Zajonc, Am Psychol 56:490-496, 2001) are robust over time and hold over a large adult range.

  • Intelligence and executive functioning in adult age: Effects of sibship size and birth order.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cognitive Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0954-1446 .- 1464-0635. ; 18:1, s. 138-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A study on inttelligence (i.e., block design and word comprehension) and executive functioning (i.e., working memory and verbal fluency) as related to family size and birth order was performed in middle-aged, young-old, and old-old adults. Previous studies and theories on the structural issues of family environment and its relationship to intelligence was the point of departure of this research. Using data from healthy participants, aged 35-85 years, in the Betula project (Nilsson et al., 1997, 2004), this study revealed that effects of sibship size and birth order, previously demonstrated in children, remain in adult age. Working memory was the most sensitive of the four tests used for revealing effects of the sibship size and birth order. Implications for the relationship between executive functioning and intelligence, and implications for the confluence and resource dilution models (Blake, 1981; Downey, 2001; Zajonc, 1976) are discussed.

  • Evaluation of a Swedish version of the Job Stress Survey
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. - : Wiley. - 0036-5564 .- 1467-9450. ; 49:3, s. 277-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study assesses and evaluates the psychometric properties of a Swedish version of the Job Stress Survey (JSS; Spielberger, 1991; Spielberger & Vagg, 1999). This instrument is constructed to measure generic sources of occupational stress encountered by employees in a wide variety of work settings, settings that often result in psychological strain. The JSS was administered to metal assembly industry workers and medical service personnel in northern Sweden (n= 1186). The exploratory factor analysis showed that there is a high similarity between the present Swedish version and the original American version. Internal reliabilities of the scales, as well as test-retest reliabilities were shown to be high, and concurrent validity, as examined by comparisons with the Perceived Stress Questionnaire Index ( Levenstein et al., 1993 ) was found to be satisfactory. The consistency of these findings is discussed with particular focus on groups of employees, gender, and cross-cultural evaluations.
