  • Thermomechanical properties of copper-carbon nanofibre composites prepared by spark plasma sintering and hot pressing
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Composites Science And Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0266-3538 .- 1879-1050. ; 70:16, s. 2263-2268
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several types of carbon nanofibres (CNF) were coated with a uniform and dense copper layer by electroless copper deposition. The coated fibres were then sintered by two different methods, spark plasma sintering (SPS) and hot pressing (HP). The Cu coating thickness was varied so that different volume fraction of fibres was achieved in the produced composites. In some cases, the CNF were pre-coated with Cr for the improvement the Cu adhesion on CNF. The results show that the dispersion of the CNF into the Cu matrix is independent of the sintering method used. On the contrary, the dispersion is directly related to the efficiency of the Cu coating, which is tightly connected to the CNF type. Overall, strong variations of the thermal conductivity (TC) of the composites were observed (20-200 W/mK) as a function of CNF type, CNF volume fraction and Cr content, while the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) in all cases was found to be considerably lower than Cu (9.9-11.3 ppm/K). The results show a good potential for SPS to be used to process this type of materials, since the SPS samples show better properties than HP samples even though they have a higher porosity, in applications where moderate TC and low CTE are required.

  • Growth of Ti3SiC2 thin films by elemental target magnetron sputtering
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 96:9, s. 4817-4826
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Epitaxial Ti3SiC2(0001) thin films have been deposited by dc magnetron sputtering from three elemental targets of Ti, C, and Si onto MgO(111) and Al2O3(0001) substrates at temperatures of 800–900 °C. This process allows composition control to synthesize Mn + 1AXn (MAX) phases (M: early transition metal; A: A-group element; X: C and/or N; n = 1–3) including Ti4SiC3. Depositions on MgO(100) substrates yielding the Ti–Si–C MAX phases with (105), as the preferred orientation. Samples grown at different substrate temperatures, studied by means of transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction investigations, revealed the constraints of Ti3SiC2 nucleation due to kinetic limitations at substrate temperatures below 700 °C. Instead, there is a competitive TiCx growth with Si segregation to form twin boundaries or Si substitutional incorporation in TiCx. Physical properties of the as-deposited single-crystal Ti3SiC2 films were determined. A low resistivity of 25 µ cm was measured. The Young's modulus, ascertained by nanoindentation, yielded a value of 343–370 GPa. For the mechanical deformation response of the material, probing with cube corner and Berkovich indenters showed an initial high hardness of almost 30 GPa. With increased maximum indentation loads, the hardness was observed to decrease toward bulk values as the characteristic kink formation sets in with dislocation ordering and delamination at basal planes.

  • Resilient moth-eye nanoimprinted antireflective and self-cleaning TiO2 sputter-coated PMMA films
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 585
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Moth-eye nanostructures are amongst the most remarkable surfaces in nature because of their multi-functionality including antireflection, self-cleaning and bactericidal ability. Moth-eye surfaces consist of subwavelength arrays of tapered nanostructures, which are challenging to reproduce artificially. Nanoimprint lithography is probably one of the most suited technologies for this purpose. However, the poor mechanical resilience and durability of the polymeric nanocones when exposed to the environment, hinders their use in actual applications. To overcome these limitations, this work demonstrates the use of a thin oxide coating over the polymer moth-eye features imprinted on poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) films. Particularly TiO2 conformal thin film coatings are deposited by unipolar pulsed dc magnetron sputtering over the antireflective nanopatterns acting as encapsulant. The coating, while preserving the antireflective properties, protects the nanostructures against mechanical scratching and improves substantially their thermal stability to over 250 ?. Furthermore, the TiO2 layer provides additional photoinduced self-cleaning functionality and at the same time it protects the matrix from UV photodegradation. The robust and durable antireflective surfaces developed here may find application on solar cells covers, flat panel displays or on optical components.

  • Epitaxial stabilization of cubic-SiNx in TiN/SiNx multilayers
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 88, s. 191902/1-191902/3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The formation of cubic-phase SiNx is demonstrated in TiN/SiNx multilayers deposited by reactive dual magnetron sputtering. Transmission electron microscopy examination shows a transition from epitaxially stabilized growth of crystalline SiNx to amorphous growth as the layer thickness increases from 0.3 to 0.8 nm. The observations are supported by ab initio calculations on different polytypes, which show that the NaCl structure has the best lattice match to TiN. Calculations also reveal a large difference in elastic shear modulus between NaCl-SiNx and TiN. The results for phase structure and shear modulus offer an explanation for the superhardening effect determined by nanoindentation experiments.
