  • QUARTZ AND Fe-DOLOMITE CEMENTS RECORD SHIFTS IN FORMATION-WATER CHEMISTRY AND HYDROCARBON MIGRATION IN DEVONIAN SHOREFACE SANDSTONES, GHADAMIS BASIN, LIBYA

    • Cementation by quartz overgrowths and subsequently by carbonates is a very common global paragenetic phenomenon in sandstones of many basins that is poorly constrained in the literature. Integrated petrography, electron microprobe, stable isotopes, fluid inclusion microthermometry, and Raman spectroscopy have helped unravel the diagenetic conditions, fluid flow, and hydrocarbon migration during the development of quartz overgrowths and later Fe-dolomite cement in the Devonian shoreface sandstones (oil and gas reservoirs), Ghadamis Basin, NW Libya. The high homogenization temperatures of Fe-dolomite (Th = 119 to 140 degrees C) together with its low delta(18) OVPDB values (-17.6% to -13.2%) and saddle-crystal morphology suggest the flux of hot basinal brines. The fluid-inclusion microthermometry shows a shift from NaCl-dominated brines during quartz cementation (16.0 to 17.3 wt.% NaCl eq.) to NaCl and CaCl2-dominated brines during Fe-dolomite cementation (15.6 to 18.4 wt.% NaCl eq.). The latter brines probably circulated through overlying Mesozoic carbonate and evaporite strata before descending deep into the basin. The similarity in T-h ranges for Fe-dolomite and quartz overgrowths, despite the shift in formationwater chemistry suggests precipitation under similar geothermal conditions. The presence of oil-filled inclusions in quartz overgrowths suggests that cementation occurred during oil migration, whereas the presence of methane in inclusions in the Fe-dolomite cement suggests precipitation during gas migration. This study shows that fluid inclusion microthermometry and Raman spectroscopy of the widespread paragenetic sequence of quartz overgrowths followed by carbonate cement are crucial to unravel changes in formation-water chemistry and fluid (including hydrocarbon) migration in sedimentary basins.

  • Hydrothermal dolomitization of the Bekhme formation (Upper Cretaceous), Zagros Basin, Kurdistan Region of Iraq : Record of oil migration and degradation

    • The common presence of oil seepages in dolostones is widespread in Cretaceous carbonate successions of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. This integrated field, petrographic, chemical, stable C, O and Sr isotopes, and fluid inclusion study aims to link dolomitization to the origin and geochemical evolution of fluids and oil migration in the Upper Cretaceous Bekhme carbonates. Flux of hot basinal (hydrothermal) brines, which is suggested to have occurred during the Zagros Orogeny, resulted in dolomitization and cementation of vugs and fractures by coarse crystalline saddle dolomite, equant calcite and anhydrite. The saddle dolomite and host dolostones have similar stable isotopic composition and formed prior to oil migration from hot (81-115 degrees C) basinal NaCl-MgCl2-H2O brines with salinities of 18-22 wt.% NaCl eq. The equant calcite cement, which surrounds and hence postdates saddle dolomite, has precipitated during oil migration from cooler (60-110 degrees C) NaCl-CaCl2-H2O brines (14-18 wt.% NaCl eq). The yellowish fluorescence color of oil inclusions in the equant calcite indicates that the oil had API gravity of 15-25 degrees composition, which is lighter than present-day oil in the reservoirs (API of 10-17 degrees). This difference in oil composition is attributed to oil degradation by the flux of meteoric water, which is evidenced by the low delta C-13 values (-8.5 parts per thousand to -3.9 parts per thousand VPDB) as well as by nil salinity and low temperature in fluid inclusions of late columnar calcite cement. This study demonstrates that linking fluid flux history and related diagenesis to the tectonic evolution of the basin provides important clues to the timing of oil migration, degradation and reservoir evolution.

  • Distribution of Diagenetic Alterations in Siliciclastic Shoreface Deposits within a Sequence Stratigraphic Framework : Evidence from the Upper Jurassic, Boulonnais, NW France

    • The distribution of diagenetic alterations in Upper Jurassic, siliciclastic shoreface sediments from NW France has been linked to the sequence stratigraphic framework. Calcite cement in mudrocks and sandstones of the transgressive (TST) and lower part of the highstand (HST) systems tracts is microcrystalline and occurs as continuously cemented layers and stratabound concretions. The average δ18OV-PDB (−2.6‰) and 87Sr/86Sr (0.7078) compositions of microcrystalline calcite indicate precipitation from largely marine pore waters.Calcite cement in sandstones of the forced regressive wedge (FRWST) and lowstand (LST) systems tracts is poikilotopic and occurs mainly as stratabound concretions. Complete dissolution of the carbonate grains and concomitant precipitation of poikilotopic calcite cement with low average δ18O (−5.3‰) and radiogenic Sr-isotope (0.70882) signatures suggest incursion of meteoric waters into sandstones during relative sea-level lowstand. The poorly lithified sandstones interbedded with sandstones cemented by poikilotopic calcite concretions display evidence of diagenesis under episodes of arid to semiarid paleoclimate, including: (i) partial cementation by opal, chalcedony, gypsum, and minor vadose calcite cement, (ii) mechanically infiltrated clays and Fe-oxides, and (iii) secondary porosity owing to partial dissolution of carbonate grains. The integration of diagenesis into sequence stratigraphy allows better elucidation and prediction of the spatial and temporal distribution of diagenetic alterations and related reservoir-quality modifications in shoreface sediments.

  • Impact of Diagenetic Alterations on Reservoir Quality and Heterogeneity of Paralic and Shallow Marine Sandstones : Links to Depositional Facies and Sequence Stratigraphy

    • This thesis constrains the distribution of diagenetic alterations and their impact on reservoir-quality and heterogeneity evolution pathways in relation to depositional environments and sequence stratigraphy (systems tracts and key sequence stratigraphic surfaces) of four selected paralic and shallow marine siliciclastic successions. Typical eogenetic alterations encountered include the dissolution and kaolinitization of framework silicates, which are closely associated to shoreface facies of forced regressive systems tract (FRWST), lowstand systems tract (LST), upper part of the highstand systems tract (HST), and below the sequence boundary (SB). These alterations are attributed to incursion of meteoric water owing to rapid and considerable fall in the relative sea level. Extensive carbonate cementation is most evident below marine and maximum flooding surfaces (MFS), whereas dissolution of carbonate cement and detrital dolomite occur in LST, HST and below SB. Parameters controlling the patterns and texture (microcrystalline vs. poikilotopic) of calcite cement have been constrained within sequence stratigraphic framework of the sandstones. Coarse crystalline to poikilotopic calcite textures of meteoric water origin are thus closely linked to the FRWST, LST and upper part of the HST sandstones and occur mainly as stratabound concretions, whereas microcrystalline calcite, which was precipitated from marine porewaters, occurs as continuously cemented layers in the transgressive systems tract (TST) and lower part of the HST sandstones.Eogenetic alterations impose, in turn, profound control on the distribution pattern of mesogenetic alterations, and hence on reservoir quality evolution (destruction vs. preservation) pathways of sandstones. Eogenetic infiltrated clays, which occur in the tidal estuarine TST and HST sandstones, have helped preserving porosity in deeply buried sandstone reservoirs (≈ 5 km) through inhibition of extensive cementation by quartz overgrowths. Other essential findings of this thesis include deciphering the control on the formation of authigenic illite and chlorite by ultra-thin (≤ 1 µm thick), grain-coating clay mineral substrate.

    • Microcrystalline, calcian rhodochrosite occurs as nodules around burrows in late Neogene pelagic sediments from the Galapagos Ridge in the Guatemala Basin, eastern equatorial Pacific (DSDP Leg 68; Site 503). Be-10 isotope revealed that the rhodochrosite nodules have formed under growth conditions much faster than those reported for Fe-Mn nodules. The overall REE patterns of the nodules and host pelagic sediments indicate element derivation mainly from marine pore water. However, variations in the shale normalised Eu values suggest influx of hydrothermal fluids into mounds area at Galapagos, which is also evidenced by the similar minor and major element contents in the nodules and host sediments.

    • The distribution of diagenetic alterations in Triassic fluvio-deltaic, quartzarenitic to sublitharenitic, lowstand systems tract (LST) sandstones of the Grès á Voltzia Formation, anastomosing fluvial, quartzarenitic transgressive systems tract (TST) sandstones of the Grès á Roseaux Formation, and shallow marine, quartzarenitic to sublitharenitic, TST sandstones of the Grès Coquiller Formation, the Paris Basin (France), can be linked to transgression and regression events, and thus to the sequence stratigraphic context. Near-surface eogenetic alterations, which display a fairly systematic link to the depositional facies and sequence stratigraphic framework, include: (i) cementation by meteoric water calcite (δ18O=−8.9‰ and δ13C=−9.1‰) in the fluvio-deltaic, LST sandstones, (ii) cementation by mixed marine–meteoric calcite (δ18O=−5.3‰ to −2.6‰ and δ13C=−3.9‰ to −1.3‰) and dolomite (δ18O=−4.6‰ to −2.6‰ and δ13C=−2.9‰ to −2.3‰) in the foreshore, TST sandstones and below parasequence boundaries (PB), and transgressive surface (TS), and in the shoreface, TST sandstones below maximum flooding surfaces (MFS), being facilitated by the presence of carbonate bioclasts, (iii) dissolution of detrital silicates and precipitation of K-feldspar overgrowths and kaolinite, particularly in the fluvio-deltaic, LST sandstones owing to effective meteoric water circulation, and (vi) formation of autochthonous glauconite, which is increases in abundance towards the top of the fluvio-deltaic, LST sandstones, and along TS, and in the shoreface, TST sandstones, by alteration of micas owing to the flux of seawaters into the sandstones during transgression, whereas parautochthonous glauconite is restricted to the TS sandstones owing to marine reworking. Mesogenetic alterations, which include cementation by quartz overgrowths and illite, display fairly systematic link to fluvio-deltaic, LST sandstones. This study has revealed that linking of diagenesis to transgression and regression events enables a better understanding of the parameters that control the spatial and temporal distribution of diagenetic alterations in sandstones and of their impact on reservoir quality evolution.
