    • CHOMIK is the name of a penetrator constructed for sampling and retrieval of Phobos surface material. It formed an integral part of the Phobos Sample Return Mission. In this paper we present its construction and intended mode of operation, since the concept is still viable for future missions either to Phobos or to other small bodies of similar dimensions. We take Phobos as an example to describe the science case for such an instrument and how it might be utilized to resolve important open issues regarding the origin of the Martian moons. Concerning the latter, we place emphasis on measurement techniques and analysis tools for mapping trace element concentrations in returned sample.

  • Health effects of reduced occupational sedentary behaviour in type 2 diabetes using a mobile health intervention : a study protocol for a 12-month randomized controlled trial—the ROSEBUD study

    • Background: Short-term trials conducted in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) showed that reducing sedentary behaviour by performing regular short bouts of light-intensity physical activity enhances health. Moreover, support for reducing sedentary behaviour may be provided at a low cost via mobile health technology (mHealth). There are a wide range of mHealth solutions available including SMS text message reminders and activity trackers that monitor the physical activity level and notify the user of prolonged sitting periods. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of a mHealth intervention on sedentary behaviour and physical activity and the associated changes in health in adults with T2DM.Methods: A dual-arm, 12-month, randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be conducted within a nationwide Swedish collaboration for diabetes research in primary health care. Individuals with T2DM (n = 142) and mainly sedentary work will be recruited across primary health care centres in five regions in Sweden. Participants will be randomized (1:1) into two groups. A mHealth intervention group who will receive an activity tracker wristband (Garmin Vivofit4), regular SMS text message reminders, and counselling with a diabetes specialist nurse, or a comparator group who will receive counselling with a diabetes specialist nurse only. The primary outcomes are device-measured total sitting time and total number of steps (activPAL3). The secondary outcomes are fatigue, health-related quality of life and musculoskeletal problems (self-reported questionnaires), number of sick leave days (diaries), diabetes medications (clinical record review) and cardiometabolic biomarkers including waist circumference, mean blood pressure, HbA1c, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides.Discussion: Successful interventions to increase physical activity among those with T2DM have been costly and long-term effectiveness remains uncertain. The use of mHealth technologies such as activity trackers and SMS text reminders may increase awareness of prolonged sedentary behaviour and encourage increase in regular physical activity. mHealth may, therefore, provide a valuable and novel tool to improve health outcomes and clinical management in those with T2DM. This 12-month RCT will evaluate longer-term effects of a mHealth intervention suitable for real-world primary health care settings.

  • The Comet Interceptor Mission

    • Here we describe the novel, multi-point Comet Interceptor mission. It is dedicated to the exploration of a little-processed long-period comet, possibly entering the inner Solar System for the first time, or to encounter an interstellar object originating at another star. The objectives of the mission are to address the following questions: What are the surface composition, shape, morphology, and structure of the target object? What is the composition of the gas and dust in the coma, its connection to the nucleus, and the nature of its interaction with the solar wind? The mission was proposed to the European Space Agency in 2018, and formally adopted by the agency in June 2022, for launch in 2029 together with the Ariel mission. Comet Interceptor will take advantage of the opportunity presented by ESA’s F-Class call for fast, flexible, low-cost missions to which it was proposed. The call required a launch to a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 point. The mission can take advantage of this placement to wait for the discovery of a suitable comet reachable with its minimum Δ V capability of 600 ms − 1 . Comet Interceptor will be unique in encountering and studying, at a nominal closest approach distance of 1000 km, a comet that represents a near-pristine sample of material from the formation of the Solar System. It will also add a capability that no previous cometary mission has had, which is to deploy two sub-probes – B1, provided by the Japanese space agency, JAXA, and B2 – that will follow different trajectories through the coma. While the main probe passes at a nominal 1000 km distance, probes B1 and B2 will follow different chords through the coma at distances of 850 km and 400 km, respectively. The result will be unique, simultaneous, spatially resolved information of the 3-dimensional properties of the target comet and its interaction with the space environment. We present the mission’s science background leading to these objectives, as well as an overview of the scientific instruments, mission design, and schedule.

  • MOCCA-SURVEY Database I: Assessing GW kick retention fractions for BH-BH mergers in globular clusters

    • Anisotropy of gravitational wave (GW) emission results in a net momentum gained by the black hole (BH) merger product, leading to a recoil velocity up to ∼103 km s−1, which may kick it out of a globular cluster (GC). We estimate GW kick retention fractions of merger products assuming different models for BH spin magnitude and orientation. We check how they depend on BH–BH merger time and properties of the cluster. We analyse the implications of GW kick retention fractions on intermediate massive BH formation by repeated mergers in a GC. We also calculate final spin of the merger product, and investigate how it correlates with other parameters: effective spin of the binary and gravitational kick velocity. We used data from MOCCA (MOnte Carlo Cluster simulAtor) GC simulations to get a realistic sample of BH–BH mergers, assigned each BH spin value according to a studied model, and calculated recoil velocity and final spin based on most recent theoretical formulas. We discovered that for physically motivated models, GW kick retention fractions are about 30 per cent 30 per cent and display small dependence on assumptions about spin, but are much more prone to cluster properties. In particular, we discovered a strong dependence of GW kick retention fractions on cluster density. We also show that GW kick retention fractions are high in final life stages of the cluster, but low at the beginning. Finally, we derive formulas connecting final spin with effective spin for primordial binaries, and with maximal effective spin for dynamical binaries.

    • Electromagnetic emissions observed in the nearest Earth environment are a superposition of natural emissions and various types of man-made noises. Also, as a consequence of catastrophic events on the Earth surface such as: thunderstorm activity, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, electromagnetic signals are registered on board low orbiting satellites. Therefore, a more accurate physical description of such a complex and dynamic system calls for a long term multi-point and multi-scales coordinated monitoring of space environment. The aim of OBSTANOVKA experiment on board ISS station is to monitor and diagnose the electromagnetic radiation and property of plasma around station, to enable the development theory of near Earth plasma interaction and for application purposes in space technology. To achieve these goals the Plasma-Wave Complex (PWC) was designed and constructed. Radio Frequency Analyser (RFA) has been developed jointly by SRC PAS in Warsaw and by IRF in Uppsala. New design radio receiver for frequency band 0.1-15 MHz, with three electric and magnetic field component of antenna system on board ISS was designed to monitoring and investigate the ionospheric plasma property and artificial noises generated around ISS. The instrument can be also used for monitoring the electromagnetic ecosystem for space weather purpose. New digital technology of this instrument creates a excellent possibility for monitoring the electromagnetic emissions in space and time domain.

  • Preparation and characterisation of the double perovskite Sr2TaMnO6

    • The presented compound, Sr2TaMnO6, has a weak, disordered magnetic structure. The metal oxide was prepared under high isostatic oxygen pressure. The doubling of the perovskite structure was proven with electron diffraction and powder neutron diffraction. Combining neutron- and X-ray diffraction data, the room-temperature structure was modelled with the Rietveld method. Both octahedral positions are partially occupied by Mn and Ta, but with different Mn/Ta ratios. AC- and DC-magnetic measurements indicate a magnetic transition at about 17 K and the AC-magnetic susceptibility, both real and imaginary part, is frequency dependent, suggesting that the material has a spin-glass feature. The magnetic spins freeze during a wide temperature range and a possible explanation is a competative situation between the double exchange (ferromagnetism) and the super-exchange (anti-ferromagnetism).
