  • Institutional barriers to organic farming in Central and Eastern European countries in the Baltic Sea region.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Agricultural and Food Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2193-7532. ; 1:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presently there is an opportunity to promote organic farming in the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) that joined the EU in 2004. The development of organic farming has the potential to decrease the amount of nutrient leaching to the Baltic Sea and could help to stop the environmental degradation of the Sea. However, this requires a diverse set of institutions. This paper explores the institutions that are lacking to promote full development of organic farming in the CEEC. A case study approach, formalised by introducing a set of indicators, has been used to identify the missing institutions. Data has been obtained from a desktop study, including a literature review, interviews and a questionnaire. The case studies partially support previous studies proposing that the development of organic farming proceeds along six steps: development of an organic farming community; development of the political recognition; establishment of financial support; establishment of non-competitive relationships between the organic sector and general agricultural institutions; development of a domestic organic food market; and development of a discussion and coordination arena. The results show that market development is the least developed step.

  • Bone markers in polycystic ovary syndrome : A multicentre study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Clinical Endocrinology. - : WILEY. - 0300-0664 .- 1365-2265. ; 87:6, s. 673-679
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Hyperandrogenism, hyperinsulinaemia and obesity, known characteristics of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), may influence bone mineral density and biochemical markers of bone turnover (BTMs) can provide a noninvasive assessment of bone turnover. To this end, the serum concentrations of BTMs and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) were analysed in women with PCOS, and their possible associations with metabolic parameters of PCOS were determined.Subjects and methods: Bone formation markers procollagen type I amino-terminal propeptide (PINP) and osteocalcin (OC), and bone resorption marker carboxy-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX), along with 25OHD, were measured in 298 women with PCOS and 194 healthy controls. Results: Serum levels of PINP (47.020.2 vs 58.1 +/- 28.6g/L, P<.001) and OC (18.2 +/- 7.5 vs 20.6 +/- 9.8g/L, P<.001) were decreased in women with PCOS compared with controls, whereas no significant differences were found in CTX and 25OHD levels. Age-stratified analyses suggested that PINP (50.5 +/- 21.7 vs 68.2 +/- 26.6g/L, P<.001) and OC levels (20.4 +/- 7.6 vs 25.5 +/- 9.6g/L, P<.001) were decreased only in the younger age group (30years) women with PCOS compared with controls. The formation markers and resorption marker decreased with age in both study groups. Conclusions: Bone formation markers were decreased in younger women with PCOS when compared with healthy women, which may affect bone mass in these women.

  • Immunoseq : the identification of functionally relevant variants through targeted capture and sequencing of active regulatory regions in human immune cells
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: BMC Medical Genomics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1755-8794. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The observation that the genetic variants identified in genome-wide association studies (GWAS) frequently lie in non-coding regions of the genome that contain cis-regulatory elements suggests that altered gene expression underlies the development of many complex traits. In order to efficiently make a comprehensive assessment of the impact of non-coding genetic variation in immune related diseases we emulated the whole-exome sequencing paradigm and developed a custom capture panel for the known DNase I hypersensitive site (DHS) in immune cells - "Immunoseq". Results: We performed Immunoseq in 30 healthy individuals where we had existing transcriptome data from T cells. We identified a large number of novel non-coding variants in these samples. Relying on allele specific expression measurements, we also showed that our selected capture regions are enriched for functional variants that have an impact on differential allelic gene expression. The results from a replication set with 180 samples confirmed our observations. Conclusions: We show that Immunoseq is a powerful approach to detect novel rare variants in regulatory regions. We also demonstrate that these novel variants have a potential functional role in immune cells.

  • Alcohol Use Disorder in Elderly Suicide Attempters: A Comparison Study
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. - : Elsevier BV. - 1064-7481. ; 21:2, s. 196-203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: To compare lifetime prevalence of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in older adults who were hospitalized in connection with a suicide attempt and in a population comparison group, as well as to compare previous suicidal behavior in attempters with and without AUD. Design: Case-comparison. Setting: Five hospitals in Western Sweden. Participants: Persons 70 years or older, who were treated in a hospital because of a suicide attempt during 2003-2006 were recruited. Of 133 eligible participants, 103 participants were enrolled (47 men, 56 women, mean age 80 years, response rate 77%). Four comparison subjects per case were randomly selected among participants in our late-life population studies. Measurements: Lifetime history of AUD in accordance with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, was discerned on the basis of interview data, case record review, and the hospital discharge register. Depression symptoms were rated using the Montgomery-Asberg Rating Scale. Results: AUD was observed in 26% of the cases and in 4% of the comparison group (odds ratio [OR]: 10.5; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.9-22.5). Associations were noted in men (OR: 9.5; 95% CI: 4.0-22.8) and women (OR: 12.0; 95% CI: 2.4-59.5). More than half of the cases with AUD and a third of those without AUD had made at least one prior suicide attempt. In these, AUD was associated with a longer interval between the first attempt and the index attempt. Conclusions: A strong association between AUD and hospital-treated suicide attempts was noted in both sexes in this northern European setting. Given the high rates of suicide worldwide in this fast-growing and vulnerable group, comparison studies in other settings are needed.
