  • Connected Oceans : A Festschrift to Leos Müller
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book is a celebration of the illustrious career and the scholarly impact of Professor Leos Müller. Inspired by his work, a truly international group of scholars here present nineteen chapters of original research. This collection represents the tip of an academic iceberg of those inspired by Leos's passion for the global connections which the seas and oceans provide. In bringing together archeologists, ethnologists, and historians of various kinds, this book reflects his influence as a colleague, teacher and friend. It also reflects the international nature of Leos's research: these chapters geographically span from Bohemia to Scandinavia, and the Americas to Asia. They include studies on merchant houses and the iron trade; consuls and diplomacy; Sweden's trade links with China, the Mediterranean and the Transoceanic worlds; the emergence of international legal systems and neutrality. The more distasteful issues of slavery and piracy are not overlooked and form components of several chapters. As such, these chapters collectively form key components to the development of global history, a subject which our esteemed colleague holds very dear to his heart. Thereby, in the spirit of Leos Müller's own research, this book illustrates that political history is also economic history, and that maritime history is also global history. Indeed, the collection incontrovertibly demonstrates the links between the disciplines represnted and thus, beyond contention, allow us insights into the Connected Oceans which are at the heart of this volume.

  • Safety, efficacy, and biomarker findings of PBT2 in targeting Abeta as a modifying therapy for Alzheimer's disease: a phase IIa, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Lancet neurology. - 1474-4422 .- 1474-4465. ; 7:9, s. 779-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: PBT2 is a metal-protein attenuating compound (MPAC) that affects the Cu2(+)-mediated and Zn2(+)-mediated toxic oligomerisation of Abeta seen in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Strong preclinical efficacy data and the completion of early, clinical safety studies have preceded this phase IIa study, the aim of which was to assess the effects of PBT2 on safety, efficacy, and biomarkers of AD. METHODS: Between December 6, 2006, and September 21, 2007, community-dwelling patients over age 55 years were recruited to this 12-week, double-blind, randomised trial of PBT2. Patients were randomly allocated to receive 50 mg PBT2, 250 mg PBT2, or placebo. Inclusion criteria were early AD (mini-mental state examination [MMSE] score between 20 and 26 points or Alzheimer's disease assessment scale-cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog) score between 10 and 25 points), taking a stable dose of acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (donepezil, galantamine, or rivastigmine) for at least 4 months, a modified Hachinski score of 4 points or less, and CT or MRI results that were consistent with AD. The principal outcomes were safety and tolerability. Secondary outcomes were plasma and CSF biomarkers and cognition. Analysis was intention to treat. The trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00471211. FINDINGS: 78 patients were randomly assigned (29 to placebo, 20 to PBT2 50 mg, and 29 to PBT2 250 mg) and 74 (95%) completed the study. 42 (54%) patients had at least one treatment emergent adverse event (10 [50%] on PBT2 50 mg, 18 [62%] on PBT2 250 mg, and 14 [48%] on placebo). No serious adverse events were reported by patients on PBT2. Patients treated with PBT2 250 mg had a dose-dependent (p=0.023) and significant reduction in CSF Abeta(42) concentration compared with those treated with placebo (difference in least squares mean change from baseline was -56.0 pg/mL, 95% CI -101.5 to -11.0; p=0.006). PBT2 had no effect on plasma biomarkers of AD or serum Zn(2+) and Cu(2+) concentrations. Cognition testing included ADAS-cog, MMSE, and a neuropsychological test battery (NTB). Of these tests, two executive function component tests of the NTB showed significant improvement over placebo in the PBT2 250 mg group: category fluency test (2.8 words, 0.1 to 5.4; p=0.041) and trail making part B (-48.0 s, -83.0 to -13.0; p=0.009). INTERPRETATION: The safety profile is favourable for the ongoing development of PBT2. The effect on putative biomarkers for AD in CSF but not in plasma is suggestive of a central effect of the drug on Abeta metabolism. Cognitive efficacy was restricted to two measures of executive function. Future trials that are larger and longer will establish if the effects of PBT2 on biomarkers and cognition that are reported here translate into clinical effectiveness.

  • Unimpeded Sailing : A Critical Edition of Johann Gröning's Navigatio Libera (Extended 1698 Edition)
  • 2018
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The original Latin text of Johann Gröning’s Navigatio libera has never before been translated into any modern vernacular language. Gröning’s intention was to set out the position of neutral nations (in this case the Danes and Swedes), and their right to pursue trade during the wars of the great maritime powers (particularly the English and the Dutch). It specifically sought to engage with and refute the work of Hugo Grotius while taking cognisance of the critique of Gröning’s work by Samuel Pufendorf. The text serves as a bridge between 17th-century polemical discourse surrounding the ‘free sea’versus ‘enclosed sea’ debate and later 18th-century legal literature on the rights of neutrals and the continuation of free trade in time of war.

  • Crown Policy, Church Decrees and Civic Necessity : Non-Lutheran Migration to Scandinavia in the Early Modern Period
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Monarchy, the Court, and the Provincial Elite in Early Modern Europe. - Leiden : Brill Academic Publishers. - 9789004694149 - 9789004441224 ; , s. 272-292
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This essay reviews the policy of Church and State in Scandinavia to ensure confessional uniformity across the kingdoms. In neither the Oldenburg kingdoms of Denmark and Norway nor that of Sweden under the House of Vasa was the implementation of the Reformation either swift or uniformly enforced. Moreover, Crown policy could deviate from the ambitions of the national Church even after the acceptance of the Reformation, which could lead to problems in confessional matters, especially when the reformed Scandinavian kingdoms found themselves under Catholic monarchs. However, while tensions simmered between Crown and Church, the real problem to the ecclesiastics in each kingdom came not from Catholicism but from contesting forms of Protestantism. Thus, difficulties arose when the Swedish and Danish-Norwegian churches, in opposition to royal policy, sought to limit, or even prevent, the immigration of non-Lutherans, arguing that immigrants of contesting confessions of faith would disturb the peace of the kingdoms.Such concerns had to be carefully balanced against commercial factors, which often pitched Court and Church policy at loggerheads as the expanding states required ever increasing revenue streams to stay afloat. The emerging commercial centres of Copenhagen, Bergen and Trondheim in Denmark-Norway experienced the same need for foreign finance and expertise as the Swedish cities of Gothenburg and Stockholm. All required migrants to develop and compete on the international markets, and all found mechanisms to circumvent the apparent contradictions thrown up by Court policy trying to accommodate Calvinists, Catholics and even Jews within the framework of a national Lutheran Church. In a shift away from the usual approach to migration into Scandinavia, this essay does not look at one ethnic group or confession of faith. Rather it follows the establishment of foreign enclaves and integrated minorities across the major commercial centres with an eye to their ability either to circumvent Court decrees or to integrate into society with Crown blessing regardless of Lutheran exclusionism. The results reveal a fresh understanding of how the migrants achieved this aim, leading to a reassessment of the issues embedded in the title of the essay, namely, Crown policy, Church decrees and Civic Necessity in the Nordic world.
