  • Att analysera interaktion
  • 2023

  • Children’s bodily and sexual integrity: Word meaning negotiation in online forum discussions
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Lavender Languages and Linguistics 26, Gothenburg 2-4 May.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The discourses surrounding young children’s bodily and sexual integrity are diverse and at times contradictory. Positions on children’s right to knowledge about self-determination over their own bodies sometimes conflict with positions advocating that such information should not be forced upon children who are too young (and too innocent) to understand “adult issues”. Teaching materials dealing with the topic also switch between perspectives; on the one hand taking the perspective of the adult role-model instilling sound values in children about where bodily boundaries should be drawn, on the other hand encouraging the children themselves to follow their intuition about what “feels right”. In this paper, we investigate how participants in discussions in an online Swedish discussion forum negotiate their respective takes on the meaning of the notion ‘children’s integrity’ by engaging in processes of word meaning negotiation (Myrendal 2015, 2019). We empirically explore how arguments are formed and what positions are taken in the negotiation process amongst the parties involved in the online discussions, and analyse how the interlocutors jointly form a common understanding. We also compare how the notion of children’s integrity is made sense of within the online interactions with how it has been framed within policy documents such as the national curriculum for preschools, and recent materials on children, integrity and rights.

  • Exploring the Web of Coined Catchy Phrases
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of WWW2012: Web Science Track.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We employ a method inspired by corpus linguistics to illustrate the complexity and multifacetedness of the Web by extracting phrases about the Web from the Web itself. The phrases are divided into semantic categories and analysed with regards to their semantic content and rhetorical functions. We argue that the extracted phrases simultaneously have descriptive content and function as names. We also argue that they are used as rhetorical tools by actors from different groups in society involved in developing the Web, which is why we suggest that they need further attention by scholars interested in Web Science and linguistics.

  • Dialogue Acts and Updates for Semantic Coordination
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 21st Workshop on the Semantics and Pragmatics of Dialogue, Saarbrücken, 15–17 August 2017 / Volha Petukhova and Ye Tian (eds.). - Saarbrücken. - 2308-2275.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper outlines an account of semantic coordination, focusing on word meaning negotiation, formalised in Type Theory with Records (TTR). The account combines parts of two dialogue act taxonomiesrelated to semantic coordination, and relate these to meaning updates both on an abstract level and at a more detailed level.

  • Att förhandla om ords betydelser online : Negotiating word meanings online
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: OFTI 32 Göteborgs universitet, 18-19 september 2014.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The focus of this study is word meaning negotiation (WMN) in communication in online discussion forums. WMN occurs when participants who are engaged in discussion about some topic remark on the word choices of others, and thereby initiate a meta-linguistic sequence in the main discussion. When entering into a WMN sequence, a particular word choice is openly contested and therefore under dispute. As a consequence, the ordinary flow of the discussion "on topic" is interrupted, and the focus is shifted to a lexical form and its associated meaning. Once a WMN sequence has been launched, participants openly negotiate between themselves their understandings and uses of the target word in the current context. WMN seems to originate in either non-understanding between the participants about what a word means in the current situation, or in disagreement between participants regarding the appropriateness of a certain word in a specific context. A dialogical perspective on meaning in language and communication is adopted in this study, which assumes that words in themselves do not have fixed, literal meanings, but instead partly open meaning potentials. The study will hone in on the process in which meaning potentials are used to create situated meaning in actual conversational contexts, as interlocutors take turns at discussing and contextualising how a word should be used and understood in a way that is mutually acceptable (and understandable) to all participants. As a result, the study aims to empirically explore the notions of meaning potentials and situated meaning, and to address the question of how meaning in concrete utterances is produced from words which have meaning potentials through processes of WMN in discussion forum communication.

  • Identity Construction and Dialogue Genres – How Notions of Dialogue May Influence Social Presence in Networked Learning Environments
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Networked Learning (A Research-Based Conference on ELearning in Higher Education and Lifelong Learning).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When analysing networked learning environments, researchers commonly try to explain the variation in activity, collaboration and learning outcomes by focusing on characteristics of the environment that primarily concern design and functionality. We want to draw attention to other aspects that affect networked learning, that concern how participants engage in dialogue and what consequences notions of dialogue may have on collaboration and learning. Building on theories of social presence and discourse analysis, we show how online identities are formed and explain how these influence the conditions for learning in networked-based environments. The paper is primarily intended for researchers in networked learning, but is also relevant for practitioners in the field, for example people involved in teaching or monitoring network-based courses, who want to know more about how group dynamics can be affected by what is going on in the dialogue between the participants.

  • Negotiating meanings online: Disagreements about word meaning in discussion forum communication
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Discourse Studies. - : SAGE Publications. - 1461-4456 .- 1461-7080. ; 21:3, s. 317-339
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © The Author(s) 2019. This article describes word meaning negotiation (WMN) in online discussion forum communication, a form of computer-mediated communication (CMC). WMN occurs when participants who are engaged in a discussion about a particular topic remark on a word choice of another participant, thus initiating a meta-linguistic sequence in which a particular word is openly questioned and the meaning of that word is up for negotiation. By closely studying the process of WMN and focusing on the practices of the participants engaged in it, this article empirically explores how situated meaning in concrete utterances is established by participants who are in disagreement about word meaning. Routine ways of entering into a WMN sequence are identified, as well as typical ways of contributing to the negotiation once the discussion has shifted focus from being on topic to being on word meaning. The article highlights the context-sensitivity of word meanings and illustrates how participants engaged in WMN orient toward both semantic properties of the words themselves as well as to relevant aspects of the conversational context.
