  • Tailoring magnetic order via atomically stacking 3d/5d electrons to achieve high-performance spintronic devices
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Reviews. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 1931-9401. ; 7:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability to tune magnetic orders, such as magnetic anisotropy and topological spin texture, is desired to achieve high-performance spintronic devices. A recent strategy has been to employ interfacial engineering techniques, such as the introduction of spin-correlated interfacial coupling, to tailor magnetic orders and achieve novel magnetic properties. We chose a unique polar-nonpolar LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice because Mn (3d)/Ir (5d) oxides exhibit rich magnetic behaviors and strong spin-orbit coupling through the entanglement of their 3d and 5d electrons. Through magnetization and magnetotransport measurements, we found that the magnetic order is interface-dominated as the superlattice period is decreased. We were able to then effectively modify the magnetization, tilt of the ferromagnetic easy axis, and symmetry transition of the anisotropic magnetoresistance of the LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice by introducing additional Mn (3d) and Ir (5d) interfaces. Further investigations using in-depth first-principles calculations and numerical simulations revealed that these magnetic behaviors could be understood by the 3d/5d electron correlation and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The results reported here demonstrate a new route to synchronously engineer magnetic properties through the atomic stacking of different electrons, which would contribute to future applications in high-capacity storage devices and advanced computing.

  • Magnetic Properties versus Interface Density in Rigid-Exchange-Coupled Amorphous Multilayers with Induced Uniaxial Anisotropy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 133:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate the possibility to tune the saturation magnetization, coercivity, and uniaxial in-plane anisotropy constant in amorphous bilayers and multilayers of Co85(Al70Zr30)15 and Sm11Co82Ti7 through the interface density. From magnetometry and x-ray circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements, we conclude that the easy-axis coercivity ?0?? increases four times when the number of bilayer repetitions, ?, increases from 1 to 10 within a constant total sample thickness of 20 nm. At the same time, the anisotropy constant ?? also increases by a factor four, whereas the saturation magnetization ?? decreases slightly. The Co spin and orbital moments, ?? and ??, are found to be approximately constant within the sample series. The average total Co moment is only 0.8–0.9 ??/atom, but the ??/?? ratio is strongly enhanced compared to pure Co. Magnetization curves extracted from XMCD measurements show that the Co and Sm moments are ferromagnetically coupled for all samples.

  • Effects of array shape and disk ellipticity in dipolar-coupled magnetic metamaterials
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 104:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two-dimensional lattices of dipolar-coupled thin film ferromagnetic nanodisks give rise to emergent superferromagnetic (SFM) order when the spacing between dots becomes sufficiently small. In this paper, we define micron-sized arrays of permalloy nanodisks arranged on a hexagonal lattice. The arrays were shaped as hexagons, squares, and rectangles to investigate finite-size effects in the SFM domain structure for such arrays. The resulting domain patterns were examined using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy. At room temperature, we find these SFM metamaterials to be below their blocking temperature. Distinct differences were found in the magnetic switching characteristics of horizontally and vertically oriented rectangular arrays. The results are corroborated by micromagnetic simulations.
