  • Redefining the role of urban studies Early Career Academics in the post-COVID-19 university
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: City. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1360-4813 .- 1470-3629. ; 26:4, s. 562-586
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We are an international collective of Early Career Academics (ECAs) who met throughout 2020 to explore the implications of COVID-19 on precarious academics. With this intervention, our aims are to voice commonly shared experiences and concerns and to reflect on the extent to which the pandemic offers opportunities to redefine Higher Education and research institutions, in a context of ongoing precarity and funding cuts. Specifically, we explore avenues to build solidarity across institutions and geographies, to ensure that the conduct of urban research, and support offered to ECAs, allows for more inclusivity, diversity, security and equitability.

  • Brain-DeepNet: A Deep Learning Based Classifier for Brain Tumor Detection and Classification
  • 2023. - 1
  • Ingår i: Intelligent Computing & Optimization. - Cham : Springer. ; , s. 550-560
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Brain tumor is one of the most hazardous disease that leads a man to gradual death. To ensure proper and effective treatment, this is very important to detect the brain tumor and predict this as cancerous or non-cancerous. Radiologists have shown interest to detect brain tumor and its category analyzing the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Image) of brain. This detection and classification task seems to be challenging because of different size, location and behavior of brain tumors. Deep learning based classifiers extract features from MRI and helps to diagnose brain tumor with the help of computer aided diagnosis system. In this paper, we have experimented this classification task on a publicly available dataset using transfer learning approach in InceptionV3 and DenseNet201 model. Data augmentation technique is performed to enrich the dataset for achieving a good classification result an to avoid over fitting.“Brain-DeepNet” a deep convolutional neural network has been proposed where six convolution layers are densely connected and extract features from dense layers. These dense layers extract features and all features are passed to a fully connected layer. Dense network extract features more efficiently from brain MRI. This work is experimented on MRI as MRI provides more details of cell structure and functions. Our proposed model has shown approximately 96.3% classification accuracy to differentiate among the three types of brain tumors most commonly encountered Glioma, meningioma, and pituitary. This model outperforms the classification performance in comparison with the pretrained models.

  • An Intelligent System to Diagnose Chikungunya under Uncertainty
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Wireless Mobile Networks, Ubiquitous Computing, and Dependable Applications. - Korea : Innovative Information Science & Technology Research Group (ISYOU). - 2093-5374 .- 2093-5382. ; 10:2, s. 37-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chikungunya is a virus-related disease, bring about by the virus called CHIKV that spreads throughmosquito biting. This virus first found in Tanzania, while blood from patients was isolated. Thecommon signs and symptoms, associated with Chikungunya are considered as fever, joint swelling, joint pain, muscle pain and headache. The examination of these signs and symptoms by the physician constitutes the typical preliminary diagnosis of this disease. However, the physician is unable tomeasure them with accuracy. Therefore, the preliminary diagnosis in most of the cases could sufferfrom inaccuracy, which leads to wrong treatment. Hence, this paper introduces the design and implementation of a belief rule based expert system (BRBES) which is capable to represent uncertainknowledge as well as inference under uncertainty. Here, the knowledge is illustrated by employing belief rule base while deduction is carried out by evidential reasoning. The real patient data of250 have been considered to demonstrate the accuracy and the robustness of the expert system. Acomparison has been performed with the results of BRBES and Fuzzy Logic Based Expert System(FLBES) as well as with the expert judgment. Furthermore, the result of BRBES has been contrastedwith various data-driven machine learning approaches, including ANN (Artificial Neural networks)and SVM (Support Vector Machine). The reliability of BRBESs was found better than those of datadriven machine learning approaches. Therefore, the BRBES presented in this paper could enable thephysician to conduct the analysis of Chikungunya more accurately.

  • Frankincense of Boswellia sacra: Traditional and modern applied uses, pharmacological activities, and clinical trials
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Industrial crops and products (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0926-6690 .- 1872-633X. ; 203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since Boswellia sacra (Burseraceae) was studied in the 19th century, it has been known for its economic and cultural values. It is cultivated mainly in the southwest regions of Oman and some regions of Yemen, and is a natural source of frankincense, "Luban" in Arabic, around the world. Frankincense, the aromatic resin of B. sacra, is used widely both for traditional purposes and for the treatment of various ailments; e.g., dental infections, tumors, dysentery, vomiting, and fevers. Recently, many reports provided evidence for the potential biological activities of B. sacra, its synonym Boswellia carteri, and their constituent chemical compounds. These activities include cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-diabetes, immunomodulatory, and anticoagulant effects. B. sacra was also tested for effects against gastric, hepatic, neurological, and skin disorders in vitro and in vivo. Clinical trials revealed good effects against carcinomas and gliomas, as well as against bladder and brain tumors. Its uses as a plant-based agent in nanotechnology displayed promising results. More efforts should be directed to further investigate these safe, plant-based bio-preservatives, and best practices should be outlined to protect these trees from extinction.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Molecules. - : MDPI AG. - 1431-5157 .- 1420-3049. ; 26:16
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ruta L. is a typical genus of the citrus family, Rutaceae Juss. and comprises ca. 40 different species, mainly distributed in the Mediterranean region. Ruta species have long been used in traditional medicines as an abortifacient and emmenagogue and for the treatment of lung diseases and microbial infections. The genus Ruta is rich in essential oils, which predominantly contain aliphatic ketones, e.g., 2-undecanone and 2-nonanone, but lack any significant amounts of terpenes. Three Ruta species, Ruta chalepensis L., Ruta graveolens L., and Ruta montana L., have been extensively studied for the composition of their essential oils and several bioactivities, revealing their potential medicinal and agrochemical applications. This review provides a systematic evaluation and critical appraisal of publications available in the literature on the composition and bioactivities of the essential oils obtained from Ruta species and includes a brief outlook of the potential applications of nanotechnology and chitosan-based products of Ruta essential oils.

  • Social factors and overweight : evidence from nine Asian INDEPTH Network sites
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Global Health Action. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1654-9716 .- 1654-9880. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Overweight/obesity increases the risk of morbidity and mortality from a number of chronic conditions, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some cancers. This study examined the distribution of body mass index (BMI) in nine Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) sites in five Asian countries and investigated the association between social factors and overweight.DATA AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in nine HDSS sites in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. The methodology of the WHO STEPwise approach to Surveillance with core risk factors (Step 1) and physical measurements for weight, height and waist circumference (Step 2) were included. In each site, about 2,000 men and women aged 25-64 years were selected randomly using the HDSS database. Weight was measured using electronic scales, height was measured by portable stadiometers and waist circumference was measured by measuring tape. Overweight/obesity was assessed by BMI defined as the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in metres (kg/m(2)).RESULTS: At least 10% people were overweight (BMI >/= 25) in each site except for the two sites in Vietnam and WATCH HDSS in Bangladesh where few men and women were overweight. After controlling for all the variables in the model, overweight increases with age initially and then declines, with increasing education, and with gender with women being heavier than men. People who eat vegetables and fruits below the recommended level and those who do high level of physical activity are, on the whole, less heavy than those who eat more and do less physical activity.CONCLUSIONS: As the proportion of the population classified as being overweight is likely to increase in most sites and overweight varies by age, sex, and social and behavioural factors, behavioural interventions (physical exercise, healthy diet) should be developed for the whole population together with attention to policy around nutrition and the environment, in order to reduce the adverse effects of overweight on health.
