  • Megahertz-rate Ultrafast X-ray Scattering and Holographic Imaging at the European XFEL
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The advent of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has revolutionized fundamental science, from atomic to condensed matter physics, from chemistry to biology, giving researchers access to X-rays with unprecedented brightness, coherence, and pulse duration. All XFEL facilities built until recently provided X-ray pulses at a relatively low repetition rate, with limited data statistics. Here, we present the results from the first megahertz repetition rate X-ray scattering experiments at the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument of the European XFEL. We illustrate the experimental capabilities that the SCS instrument offers, resulting from the operation at MHz repetition rates and the availability of the novel DSSC 2D imaging detector. Time-resolved magnetic X-ray scattering and holographic imaging experiments in solid state samples were chosen as representative examples, providing an ideal test-bed for operation at megahertz rates. Nevertheless, our results are relevant and applicable to any other non-destructive XFEL experiments in the soft X-ray range.

  • Magnetic Damping in Polycrystalline Thin-Film Fe-V Alloys
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - : American Physical Society. - 2331-7019. ; 15:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the magnetic damping properties of polycrystalline Fe-V alloy thin films that are deposited at room temperature. By varying the concentration of V in the alloy, the saturation magnetization can be adjusted from that of Fe to near zero. We show that exceptionally low values of the damping parameter can be maintained over the majority of this range, with a minimum damping at approximately 15%-20% V concentration. Such a minimum is qualitatively reproduced with ab initio calculations of the damping parameter, although at a concentration closer to 10% V. The measured intrinsic damping has a minimum value of (1.53 +/- 0.08) x 10-3, which is approximately a factor of 3 higher than our calculated value of 0.48 x 10-3. From first-principles theory, we outline the factors that are mainly responsible for the trend of the damping parameter in these alloys. In particular, the band structure and resulting damping mechanism is shown to change at V concentrations greater than approximately 35% V content.

  • Determination of the spin Hall effect and the spin diffusion length of Pt from self-consistent fitting of damping enhancement and inverse spin-orbit torque measurements
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 98:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the evolution of spin-orbit torque (SOT) with increasing heavy-metal thickness in ferromagnet/normal metal (FM/NM) bilayers is critical for the development of magnetic memory based on SOT. However, several experiments have revealed an apparent discrepancy between damping enhancement and dampinglike SOT regarding their dependence on NM thickness. Here, using linewidth and phase-resolved amplitude analysis of vector network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (VNA-FMR) measurements, we simultaneously extract damping enhancement and both fieldlike and dampinglike inverse SOT in Ni80Fe20/Pt bilayers as a function of Pt thickness. By enforcing an interpretation of the data which satisfies Onsager reciprocity, we find that both the damping enhancement and dampinglike inverse SOT can be described by a single spin diffusion length (approximate to 4nm), and that we can separate the spin pumping and spin-memory loss contributions to the total damping. This analysis indicates that less than 40% of the angular momentum pumped by FMR through the Ni80Fe20/Pt interface is transported as spin current into the Pt. On account of the spin-memory loss and corresponding reduction in total spin current available for spin-charge transduction in the Pt, we determine the Pt spin Hall conductivity [sigma(SH) = (2.36 +/- 0.04) x 10(6) omega(-1) m(-1)] and bulk spin Hall angle (theta(SH) = 0.387 +/- 0.008) to be larger than commonly cited values. These results suggest that Pt can be an extremely useful source of SOT if the FM/NM interface can be engineered to minimize spin loss. Lastly, we find that self-consistent fitting of the damping and SOT data is best achieved by a model with Elliott-Yafet spin relaxation and extrinsic inverse spin Hall effect, such that both the spin diffusion length and spin Hall conductivity are proportional to the Pt charge conductivity.

  • Extreme Domain Wall Speeds under Ultrafast Optical Excitation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 131:25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Time-resolved ultrafast EUV magnetic scattering was used to test a recent prediction of > 10 km/s domain wall speeds by optically exciting a magnetic sample with a nanoscale labyrinthine domain pattern. Ultrafast distortion of the diffraction pattern was observed at markedly different timescales compared to the magnetization quenching. The diffraction pattern distortion shows a threshold dependence with laser fluence, not seen for magnetization quenching, consistent with a picture of domain wall motion with pinning sites. Supported by simulations, we show that a speed of approximate to 66 km/s for highly curved domain walls can explain the experimental data. While our data agree with the prediction of extreme, nonequilibrium wall speeds locally, it differs from the details of the theory, suggesting that additional mechanisms are required to fully understand these effects.

  • Generation of bright phase-matched circularly-polarized extreme ultraviolet high harmonics
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nature Photonics. - 1749-4885 .- 1749-4893. ; 9:2, s. 99-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Circularly-polarized extreme ultraviolet and X-ray radiation is useful for analysing the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of materials. To date, such radiation has only been available at large-scale X-ray facilities such as synchrotrons. Here, we demonstrate the first bright, phase-matched, extreme ultraviolet circularly-polarized high harmonics source. The harmonics are emitted when bi-chromatic counter-rotating circularly-polarized laser pulses field-ionize a gas in a hollow-core waveguide. We use this new light source for magnetic circular dichroism measurements at the M-shell absorption edges of Co. We show that phase-matching of circularly-polarized harmonics is unique and robust, producing a photon flux comparable to linearly polarized high harmonic sources. This work represents a critical advance towards the development of table-top systems for element-specific imaging and spectroscopy of multiple elements simultaneously in magnetic and other chiral media with very high spatial and temporal resolution.

  • Magnetic asymmetry around the 3p absorption edge in Fe and Ni
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This work is a joint theoretical and experimental study of the relation between the magneto- optical response of a material in the sub-picosecond timescale and its instantaneous magnetisation. We perform pump-probe experiments in the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (T-MOKE) geometry. We measure the magnetic asymmetry of elemental Fe and Ni before and after the laser pulse. The observed differences between the magnetic asymmetry curves for various photon energies suggest that the relation between asymmetry and sample magnetization is more complex than a simple proportionality. Further insight is obtained by means of theoretical simulations based on density-functional theory. Our calculations show that non-linear effects in the asymmetry are most prominent at energies corresponding to the absorption edge and that the proportionality is recovered outside of this region. In conclusion, our experimental and theoretical results emphasize the need of including the complex relation between asymmetry and magnetization in the interpretation of ultrafast magnetization experiments in terms of microscopic properties.

  • Element Selective Investigation of Spin Dynamics in Magnetic Multilayers
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Ultrafast Magnetism I. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783319077437 - 9783319077420 ; , s. 307-309
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our understanding of ultrafast switching processes in novel spin-based electronics depends on our detailed knowledge of interactions between spin, charge and phonons in magnetic structures. We present element-selective studies, using extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light, to gain insight into spin dynamics in exchange coupled magnetic multilayers on the femtosecond time scale.

  • Ultrafast magnetization enhancement in metallic multilayers driven by superdiffusive spin current
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 3, s. 1037-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Uncovering the physical mechanisms that govern ultrafast charge and spin dynamics is crucial for understanding correlated matter as well as the fundamental limits of ultrafast spin-based electronics. Spin dynamics in magnetic materials can be driven by ultrashort light pulses, resulting in a transient drop in magnetization within a few hundred femtoseconds. However, a full understanding of femtosecond spin dynamics remains elusive. Here we spatially separate the spin dynamics using Ni/Ru/Fe magnetic trilayers, where the Ni and Fe layers can be ferroor antiferromagnetically coupled. By exciting the layers with a laser pulse and probing the magnetization response simultaneously but separately in Ni and Fe, we surprisingly find that optically induced demagnetization of the Ni layer transiently enhances the magnetization of the Fe layer when the two layer magnetizations are initially aligned parallel. Our observations are explained by a laser-generated superdiffusive spin current between the layers.

  • Magnetic damping in sputter-deposited Co2MnGe Heusler compounds with A2, B2, and L2(1) orders : Experiment and theory
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 97:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show that very low values of the magnetic damping parameter can be achieved in sputter deposited polycrystalline films of Co2MnGe annealed at relatively low temperatures ranging from 240 degrees C to 400 degrees C. Damping values as low as 0.0014 are obtained with an intrinsic value of 0.0010 after spin-pumping contributions are considered. Of importance to most applications is the low value of inhomogeneous linewidth that yields measured linewidths of 1.8 and 5.1 mT at 10 and 40 GHz, respectively. The damping parameter monotonically decreases as the B2 order of the films increases. This trend is reproduced and explained by ab initio calculations of the electronic structure and damping parameter. Here, the damping parameter is calculated as the structure evolves from A2 to B2 to L2(1) orders. The largest decrease in the damping parameter occurs during the A2 to B2 transition as the half-metallic phase becomes established.
