  • Spatial and temporal patterns of economic segregation in Sweden’s metropolitan areas : A mobility approach
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Environment and Planning A. - 1472-3409 .- 0308-518X. ; 50:4, s. 809-825
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The statistical resources at hand for segregation research are usually almost exclusively confined to annual or decennial records where the only available spatial information is the individual’s place of residence. This coarse temporal periodicity and spatial resolution provides a very limited account of people’s diurnal lives. Incorporating mobility and temporal dimensions in segregation analysis is advocated within a growing body of research but there has rarely been sufficient data to make this possible. In this paper, we employ a fine-grained mobile phone dataset outlining the daily mobility of a substantial sample of the residents in Sweden’s metropolitan areas. Combining spatial trajectory data with detailed socio-economic residential statistics, we are able to study how everyday spatial mobility in cities shapes the segregation experiences of people and changes the segregation levels of places. Results indicate that while mobility alleviates segregation for some individuals, the population of a large number of areas remain highly segregated even when daily mobility is taken into account. Individuals residing or spending time in central urban areas are more exposed to individuals from other areas because of daily moves to these central places. Daytime movement to central areas also reduces segregation significantly for people from places remote from city centres but with high average levels of mobility whilst daytime segregation levels remain close to their original night-time levels in low-mobility areas in the outskirts of the cities.

  • Sweden: internal migration in a high-migration Nordic country
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Internal migration in the developed world: are we becoming less mobile?. - 9781472478061 - 9781317114499 ; , s. 203-225
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden was historically, and remains, a high-migration country. The chapter considers its experience using the census and population register data that are available for the analysis of migration over long historical periods, assessing their strengths and weaknesses. It then outlines levels of inter-parish moves from 1900 to 2015 as well as moves over shorter distances from the 1970s. The former oscillate around a stable level although with minor peaks in the 1930s, immediately after WWII, and to a lesser extent around 1970, possibly related to economic conditions and labour demand. After a trough in the 1980s, migration rates have since increased. An analysis of change in migration rates between the early 1990s and early 2000s using register data suggests that ageing has depressed all address-changing rates and has not been fully counteracted by changes in population composition by marital status and education levels that have moved people into more mobile groups. At the same time, people in each demographic sub-group tended to become more migratory. For longer-distance moves, increased education has had a positive effect on migration rate but again group-specific rates have also increased. It is suggested that this is a result of the expansion of higher education, the centralisation of services and jobs in the ʼnew economy’ and the welfare regime that reduces the risks in moving.

  • Back to the city : internal return migration to metropolitan regions in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Environment and planning A. - : SAGE Publications. - 0308-518X .- 1472-3409. ; 45:10, s. 2477-2494
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Longitudinal microdata on the Swedish population, 1990-2006, are used to examine the numbers and characteristics of internal return migrants, emphasizing Sweden's three largest cities. Our study indicates that metropolitan regions are gaining population from net return migration, which thus carries people in the same direction as does most internal migration. Evidence also indicates that returnees to metropolitan regions are more likely to stay permanently than are migrants returning elsewhere. Furthermore, return migrants to metropolitan regions are distinguished from other return migrants in ways that emphasize the advantages of these regions, higher incomes and levels of education being among the pronounced attributes. However, metro-bound returnees do not have as many children as do other return migrants.

  • Is the Tied Returnee Male or Female? : The Trailing Spouse Thesis Reconsidered
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Population, Space and Place. - : Wiley. - 1544-8444 .- 1544-8452. ; 21:8, s. 872-881
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A common finding of 30-40 years of family migration studies worldwide is that such migration primarily benefits the careers of men in couples but generally damages the women's careers. Findings have recently become more nuanced as the research focus has broadened, hinting that families returning to one spouse's region of previous residence might deviate from this general observation of men as gainers. The present research demonstrates that when families migrate to regions where one spouse has previously lived, it is the female spouse who tends to return, the male spouse (and children, if any) accompanying her as a trailing spouse. This result also holds when restricting attention to those few families in which the female spouse experiences the greatest income increase by moving. There is no evidence of a tradeoff between returning to a region of previous residence and career development. The findings suggest that women compensate for the slighter economic gains with greater non-monetary gains.

  • Clamour for glamour? City Competition for hosting the Swedish tryouts to the Eurovision Song Contest
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Tijdschrift voor economische en sociale geografie. - Utrecht : University of Utrecht. - 0040-747X .- 1467-9663. ; 101:2, s. 111-125
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For some time it has been argued that cities all over the world have become more entrepreneurial and increasingly competitive. Most research has focused on spectacular events in well-known metropolises, but far less is known about how smaller cities engage in competitive activities. This paper focuses on how, why and what Swedish cities hope to achieve by engaging themselves in hosting the tryouts to the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), which provides an opportunity for a critical case study of place marketing and city competition in Sweden. The empirical material is based on interviews with stakeholders in the tryouts. Our findings show that the local authorities do not compete in the same way as suggested by the literature, but instead collaborate to a great deal. While there are various motives behind arranging a tryouts tryout, it is noted that whereas the ESC presents an opportunity for a host city to 'place itself on the map', hosting a tryout is often mainly seen as an opportunity to show the organisers of the event the city's potential for hosting other events in the future. Our findings suggest that the main outcome of hosting a tryout, an outcome that the local authorities seem content with, is having arranged a glamorous party for the local inhabitants. The paper concludes by discussing why competition was found to be less outspoken than the literature suggests.
