  • Religion and the Media : Continuity, Complexity, and Mediatization
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Religious Complexity in the Public Sphere. - Basingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783319556772 - 9783319556789 ; , s. 137-191
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter begins with a presentation of the particular features of the Nordic media systems and their transformations since 1980. The following analyzes three forms of mediatized religion: journalism on religion (in major newspapers), religion in popular media (popular magazines and films), and religious media (religious programs in the public service broadcasting and the Internet presentations by the Nordic majority churches). The conclusions show no simple pattern of a decline or resurgence of the visibility of religion in the media. This chapter also asks what the media do to religion (mediatization theory), and concludes that the media genre has a profound impact on the representation of religion, which results in a complex pattern of increased diversity of topics and perspectives.

  • Religion on the political agenda
  • 2018. - 1
  • Ingår i: Religious Complexity in the Public Sphere. - Basingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783319556772 ; , s. 137-191
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nordic politics on religion has historically been formed by the close relationship between the state and the Lutheran majority churches. There has been a consensus on religious tolerance and the value of an inclusive majority church. This chapter asks whether the growing religious diversity during the past thirty years has implied a shift in the role of religion in political opinions and debates. ISSP survey data on political and religious views from 1991-2008 shows continuity as well as change across the Nordic countries. The growing religious diversity does not seem to have changed previous patterns of connections between individual religiosity and political party preferences. However, people in Denmark, Norway and Sweden have become more tolerant towards religious minorities and their rights. Nordic political party platforms and parliamentary debates is a rich source of information to changes in the role of religion in political discourse. Christianity and the majority churches are still used as references to national identity in party platforms, in particular in Denmark and Norway. The analysis of the parliamentary debates shows that there is a growing invocation of religion in the parliamentary debates in all the Nordic countries. This tendency is most obvious in Denmark and Norway and weakest in Sweden. In particular, issues that connect religion to Islam and to human rights have increased, particularly in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, where levels of immigration are higher than in Finland and Iceland. In conclusion, religion has become more diversified and more contested as a political issue during the period studied, both in terms of the issues to which it is connected, and in terms of the range of religious traditions that are addressed. This development can be seen as a politicization of religion in a process of renegotiating social and cultural identities and values in the Nordic countries.

  • Considering the ways biocultural diversity helps enforce the urban green infrastructure in times of urban transformation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability. - : Elsevier BV. - 1877-3435 .- 1877-3443. ; 22, s. 7-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditionally, biocultural diversity (BCD) has been researched in non-western and indigenous societies. Recently, it has also been applied in urbanized and industrialized societies, in particular for the planning and management of urban green infrastructure (UGI). Diversity in human and biological systems is considered to support cities' adaptation capacity. However, diversity might also increase the risk of conflicts. In this paper, we discuss not only how the BCD approach could strengthen studies on human-nature interactions in an urban context, but also the potential pitfalls of applying BCD. By means of two examples of BCD research, that is people in-places and people-making UGI in cities, we argue that BCD as a reflexive concept can strengthen UGI planning and management.

  • Public participation GIS in sustainable tourism planning : experiences from Sweden and Finland
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 29th Nordic Symposium on Tourism and Hospitality Research: Shaping mobile futures: Challenges and possibilities in precarious times, Akureyri (online), 21-23 September, 2021.. ; , s. 107-111
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  The purpose of this paper is to discuss challenges and opportunities in using Public participation GIS (PPGIS) in planning at a tourism destination located in a rural context. The past decades' development in technology has opened the possibility for using digital tools such as PPGIS. PPGIS is the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to broaden public engagement in planning and management practices. PPGIS usage in various planning contexts is well documented, however more research is needed on PPGIS usability for planning at tourism destinations located in remote areas of developed countries. This paper uses two case areas with similar characteristics, Sälenfjällen, Sweden, and Kymenlaakso, Finland to contrast and compare the PPGIS use in addressing mobility challenges, respectively. Both Sälenfjällen and Kymenlaakso share a key feature for being prominent tourist destinations located in remote areas that experience mobility challenges. For the destinations to develop sustainably, the mobility issues ought to be addressed for instance through planning conducted to ensure the development of tourism that includes wider societal, economic, and environmental goals. In both studies, the PPGIS method was implemented through surveys shared to visitors where the aim was to collect their perceptions on transport and mobility challenges that could inform destination management and planning.  Findings from the studies indicate that the PPGIS adds to the planning process by improving the collection of spatially explicit data. However, there are still challenges in areas like data collection, sampling, and quality of the data gathered from the public and its implementation in planning. The study adds to a growing literature exploring the use of PPGIS in the field of tourism and recreation and is to our knowledge among the first to use it in a comparative tourism-transport context in the Nordic peripheries.
