  • Facets of Mobile Lifelong Learning Services
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Computer Supported Education. - : SciTePress. ; , s. 543-551
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the era of digital services and digital connectivity, a massive amount of knowledge has become available and accessible all the time and for all ages. This mandates significant structural changes in the ways in which knowledge are shared and contents are presented. The ways in which knowledge is shared and learners become engaged with that knowledge are crucial in lifelong learning. In lifelong learning the knowledge and the content must be delivered to learners at the right time, without distractions and noise. The traditional educational offering in classrooms is not anymore feasible and supportive as learning happens in a disengaged manner in lifelong learning. In new lifelong learning services, user experience (UX) plays a key role in delivering content appropriately and supporting transition of learning between different contexts with adaptive learning media. The objective of this study is to illustrate and elaborate on the roles of feelings and emotions in engaging students i n lifelong learning applications. We have applied systematic literature review (SLR) to identify emotional factors associated with lifelong mobile learning (m-learning) environments. Based on the findings, we propose an application concept as a case study to demonstrate how emotional factors can manifest themselves in lifelong learning applications. Finally, based on the findings of the literature review and the case study evaluation, we propose a model illustrating the facets in lifelong learning applications.

  • Comparison of chemical, electronic, and optical properties of Mg-doped AlGaN
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 120:50, s. 28591-28597
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen are common unintentional impurities of Al(x)Ga(1−x)N crystals. This impurity structure and its interplay with Mg impurities in Al(x)Ga(1−x)N semiconductors are relevant to develop the p-type nitride crystals for various devices (e.g, LEDs, transistors, gas sensors) but are still unclear. Here we have investigated Mg-doped Al0.5Ga0.5N before and after postgrowth annealing with valence-band and core-level photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and resistivity measurements. First, it is found that a surface part of the Al0.5Ga0.5N crystal is surprisingly inert with air and stable against air exposure-induced changes. Thus, the relatively surface-sensitive photoelectron spectroscopy measurements reflect in this case also the bulk crystal characteristics. The measurements reveal the presence of deep states up to 1 eV above valence-band maximum before and after the annealing and that oxygen and carbon occupy N lattice sites (i.e., ON and CN). The model where CN-induced acceptor states in the band gap participate in the blue emission (photoluminescence) is supported. Furthermore, the presented Mg 2p core-level spectra demonstrate that part of Mg atoms forms direct bond(s) with oxygen in the bulklike structure of Al0.5Ga0.5N and that the chemical environment of Mg atoms is much richer than was expected previously.

  • Mesopolobus incultus auct. (Hymenoptera : Pteromalidae) contains two distinct species: Mesopolobus incultus (Walker, 1834) and Mesopolobus amyntor (Walker, 1845)
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Entomologica Fennica. - 0785-8760. ; 29:4, s. 175-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mesopolobus incultus auct. is hypothesized to consist of two different species, M. amyntor (Walker) and M incultus (Walker). This hypothesis is supported by molecular (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, i.e. COI), morphological and biological data. Mesopolobus amyntor is a primary parasitoid of Mecinus pascuorum (Gyllenhal) and M. labilis (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) on Plantago lanceolata. Mesopolobus incultus is a primary parasitoid of Protapion fulvipes (Geoffroy) (Coleoptera: Apionidae) on Trifolium repens and T.pratense, and has also been inferred to act as a secondary parasitoid (hyperparasitoid) of Spintherus dubius (Nees) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) or Bruchophagus gibbus (Bohe-man) (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae). The results of this study lead to following nomenclatural changes: M. amyntor is removed from synonymy under M. incultus, and Pteromalus urgo, P. belesis and P. berecynthos, all described by Walker, are synonymized under M. amyntor. The species are diagnosed with characters illustrated.

  • Global analysis of continental boundary layer new particle formation based on long-term measurements
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Chemistry And Physics. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1680-7316 .- 1680-7324. ; 18:19, s. 14737-14756
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Atmospheric new particle formation (NPF) is an important phenomenon in terms of global particle number concentrations. Here we investigated the frequency of NPF, formation rates of 10 nm particles, and growth rates in the size range of 10-25 nm using at least 1 year of aerosol number size-distribution observations at 36 different locations around the world. The majority of these measurement sites are in the Northern Hemisphere. We found that the NPF frequency has a strong seasonal variability. At the measurement sites analyzed in this study, NPF occurs most frequently in March-May (on about 30 % of the days) and least frequently in December-February (about 10 % of the days). The median formation rate of 10 nm particles varies by about 3 orders of magnitude (0.01-10 cm(-3) s(-1)) and the growth rate by about an order of magnitude (1-10 nm h(-1)). The smallest values of both formation and growth rates were observed at polar sites and the largest ones in urban environments or anthropogenically influenced rural sites. The correlation between the NPF event frequency and the particle formation and growth rate was at best moderate among the different measurement sites, as well as among the sites belonging to a certain environmental regime. For a better understanding of atmospheric NPF and its regional importance, we would need more observational data from different urban areas in practically all parts of the world, from additional remote and rural locations in North America, Asia, and most of the Southern Hemisphere (especially Australia), from polar areas, and from at least a few locations over the oceans.

  • Global patterns and drivers of ecosystem functioning in rivers and riparian zones
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - Washington : American Association of Advancement in Science. - 2375-2548. ; 5:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • River ecosystems receive and process vast quantities of terrestrial organic carbon, the fate of which depends strongly on microbial activity. Variation in and controls of processing rates, however, are poorly characterized at the global scale. In response, we used a peer-sourced research network and a highly standardized carbon processing assay to conduct a global-scale field experiment in greater than 1000 river and riparian sites. We found that Earth's biomes have distinct carbon processing signatures. Slow processing is evident across latitudes, whereas rapid rates are restricted to lower latitudes. Both the mean rate and variability decline with latitude, suggesting temperature constraints toward the poles and greater roles for other environmental drivers (e.g., nutrient loading) toward the equator. These results and data set the stage for unprecedented "next-generation biomonitoring" by establishing baselines to help quantify environmental impacts to the functioning of ecosystems at a global scale.
