Constraining the eruption history of Rangitoto volcano, New Zealand, using palaeomagnetic data

- New Zealand's largest city, Auckland, is situated within the basaltic Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF). Therefore, understanding the eruption history of the local volcanoes in the field is of great importance in order to assess future hazards that they may pose. Rangitoto is the youngest and largest volcano in the AVF, although the timing of the first eruption and the duration of the volcanic activity are still uncertain. Here, we use palaeomagnetic methods to provide additional constraints to the duration of the main shield-building phase of Rangitoto, previously estimated to have lasted either less than 100 years or approximately 1000 years. Lava flow samples from an -140 m length vertically oriented drill core produced 203 palaeoinclinations and 74 palaeointensity estimates. Our results show significant variation in both inclination (up to 30 degrees) and intensities (which fall between 25 and 60 & mu;T; present day field values for Auckland are -55 & mu;T). Potential non-geomagnetic explanations for these variations, including thermochemical processes and rheological deformation are discussed. A statistical model was created to determine the minimum duration for the construction of Rangitoto that is compatible with the variations in the palaeomagnetic data, using prior information about the rate of change of the geomagnetic field. We conclude that the palaeomagnetic data are incompatible with the previously suggested short duration (under 100 years) of the shield-building phase and suggest instead a range of 150-450 years, when also accounting for the available radiocarbon ages. Given these results, this has implications for the timing, and thus impact of possible future eruptions in the AVF.

- BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Life satisfaction in the elderly has usually been found to be closely related to self-rated health, and less to diagnoses and more objective measures of health status. However, few studies have examined the relative importance of various specific diagnoses in population-based samples. METHODS: In this study, we investigate the relationship between life satisfaction and medical diagnoses in a non-demented sample of 392 participants aged 80 and older. RESULTS: Among 25 common diagnoses, only sleeping problems, urinary incontinence and stroke were significantly related to life satisfaction. Men with angina pectoris and eczema were less satisfied with life compared with men without these diagnoses, whereas women with peptic ulcer were less satisfied with life compared with women without this diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirm previous findings of a weak relationship between medically based measures of health and life satisfaction. However, health care and future studies of health and quality of life need to focus on the fact that meaning and consequences of various diseases differ among individuals and that gender may partially account for variability.

- People often claim that health makes the difference for life-satisfaction and well-being in late life. It is, however, typically found that self-report is the health measure that makes a difference in these outcomes, rather than medically based measures. Noteworthy, few studies have so far included a comprehensive set of common diagnoses based on medical records. The present study investigated the relationship between life satisfaction and medical diagnoses among 412 non-demented individuals drawn from the Swedish OCTO-Twin study. Analysis of covariance showed that when gender and age were controlled for, only 6 out of 50 diagnoses were related to lower life satisfaction. These were (prevalence in parenthesis) sleeping problems (65%), dizziness (64%), rheumatoid arthritis (3%), stroke (20%), and urine incontinence (51%). The study provides support for a relationship in diseases that affect everyday life functioning among a substantial proportion of the oldest old. - Background: Phronesis is a way of knowing, implying wisdom, experiences, and reflections that guide our judgements. Phronesis, important for learning, is a neglected form of knowledge when applied to research.Aim: To examine how phronesis is conceptualised and practiced in three research projects.Method: Data from eight interviews with researchers involved in three research projects was generated. The interview material was analysed. A theoretical matrix of contemporary understanding of phronesis was applied to the material.Result: Examples of phronesis from three research projects in occupational therapy are presented according to categories of contemporary phronesis; acknowledging embodiment, embracing humility, using perceptiveness, and practicing reflexivity.Significance: This unique approach of analysing research projects contributes to the understanding of phronesis and its implications for research, providing valuable insights into the researchers’ praxis in their respective projectsConclusion: There is a need for a greater recognition of phronesis as a dimension of knowledge within all types of research, and within the discipline. By not recognising phronesis as a legitimate form of knowledge, the discipline perpetuates a superiority of knowledge from episteme that dominates our ways of learning about the world around us and where the type of knowledge gleaned from phronesis is consequently marginalised.

- Social isolation and loneliness have become everyday concerns forpopulations all over the world as these factors are affecting both physical and mentalhealth in a negative way. Feelings of isolation and loneliness are increasinglyacknowledged as a health risk among older persons. ICTs have been recognized aseffective tools to combat social isolation among older people. The aim of this studywas to explore factors of significance when introducing a tablet-based systemproviding digital social activities for older persons with home care. Participants were17 persons, age 70 and older, who lived alone and had assistance from home care.This exploratory study used cross-sectional qualitative data analyzed throughthematic analysis. Three themes were generated: 1) lacking vocabulary related tothe context, 2) intuitive user interface may replace extensive instructions and 3)unwillingness to commit to a pre-defined measure of performance.

- Social isolation and loneliness among older people is a growing problem with negative effects on physical and mental health. In co-creation with older adults individualized social activities were designed where older adults through computer mediated communication were able to participate in social activities without leaving their homes. Four types of activities were designed; outdoor activity, music event, visiting a friend and leisure activity. A participatory action research design was applied, where end users together with scientists from two research fields developed, tested and evaluated online participation in the activities. Usability and safety of the systems were major concerns among older adults. The evaluation pointed out that level of simplicity, usability and audio-video quality determined the level of satisfaction with the human interaction during the activity, thereby affecting the meaningfulness of the activity. The research presented in this paper constitutes the first step in a long-term research process aiming at developing a digital coaching system that gives older adults personalized support for increasing participation in meaningful social activities.
