  • Double Helix Relationships in Use and Design of Informing Systems: Lessons to Learn from Phenomenology and Hermeneutics
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Use and Redesign in IS: Double Helix Relationships?. - 9781932886054 ; 10, s. 001-019
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The theme of this monograph of Informing Science is a dialectic we perceive to exist between meaningful use and reflection upon use. This dialectic between use and reflection on use (or thinking, and thinking about thinking) may be considered in the following way. Each of these elements is subject to change. As reflection triggers change in use, and such change triggers further reflection, a spiral comes about. Lived human experience, and reflection upon that experience, seems to shape a double helix. The monograph contains contributions exploring particular ways in which studies of use could benefit from a relationship to philosophical frameworks such as hermeneutics and phenomenology.

  • Using Double Helix Relationships to Understand and Change Informing Systems
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Use and Redesign in IS: Double Helix Relationships?. ; , s. 21-62
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper opens by generalizing the concept of 'informing science'. It then introduces some meta-scientific perspectives and a discussion of a metaphor that has considerable explanatory power. Two main schools of metascience are presented and contrasted. The difference between treating invariances in natural sciences and in social and cultural sciences is discussed. The double helix is introduced as a generic metaphor to highlight important distinctions. Highlighting new distinctions in this way can help to avoid simply assimilating them into already familiar distinctions. The paper also discusses how some metascientific perspectives and the transdisciplinary generalized concept of informing science can be seen as related. Finally, the paper argues that computerized models never keep up with continuously changing situations. However, people always have to handle the full variety of situations, including those not foreseen during requirements engineering. To address this, the paper suggests balancing requirements engineering with model transparency engineering

  • A Double Helix Metaphor for Use and Usefulness in Informing Systems
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Use and Redesign in IS: Double Helix Relationships?. - 9781932886054 ; 10, s. 273-295
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Following the theme of this monograph, this paper discusses a dialectic we perceive to subsist between meaningful use and reflection upon use. This dialectic between experiencing use and reflecting upon experiencing use (or thinking, and thinking about thinking) may be considered in the following way. Each of these elements is subject to change. As reflection triggers change in use, and such change triggers further reflection, a spiral comes about. Lived human experience, and reflection upon that experience, seems to shape a double helix. In this paper, the authors suggest a need for a hermeneutically-informed, phenomenological approach when considering the complexities of informing systems, viewed as human activity systems. It is suggested that human actors, as users of informing systems, must own and control any inquiry into use in relation to design for themselves, and that individual sensemaking processes are the key to successful interaction within the double helix metaphor.

  • What or Whom do Knowledge-Managers Manage?
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 13th European Conference on Knowledge Management, Vols 1 And 2. ; , s. 839-847
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Knowledge-management has a long history in the work place enacted variously as apprenticeship, corporate libraries, and professional training programs. As an academic topic, it first appeared after Nonaka's (1991) paper. Western authors on knowledge-management generally treat "knowledge" and "information" as some kind of a commodity. "Knowledge" and "information" are thought to be acquired and transferred like other commodities. The paper argues that the use of verbs has value over nouns. It is more useful to refer to processes of becoming more knowledgeable and better informed than simply use the nouns forms. This paper's thesis is: "a consistent change of using verbs to refer to processes will open some new vistas in research on knowledge-management." The paper will also discuss ways to conceive of learning and communicating. In these discussions it will argue risking a misleading view on communicating by using the nouns "knowledge" and "information". The paper will further discuss how this will avoid the risk of developing phlogiston like theories. Then the paper will turn to two approaches of what it means to become more knowledgeable at the individual level. One way is direct and the other by indirect experience. The latter uses language. Next the paper will address the transition from individual learning to innovative companies. This will start from how people observe and interact as they learn and how this can be disseminated and applied within companies. In this context the question of "What and whom do knowledge-managers manage?" will be taken up. Knowledge-managers generally will direct creativity by asking questions. The paper will then reflect on Nonaka's "spiral of knowledge". Then the paper will turn to problem formulation and solution. Next it will address some supporting factors and obstacles to reflecting creatively, both for individuals and companies. The paper will end with some conclusions in which it will review new vistas indicated in the text.

  • Die Kunst die Zukunft zu erfinden : Selbstrationalität, asymmetrische Information und Selbstorganisation in einer wissensintensiven professionellen Non Profit Organisation
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation focuses on predictability problems regarding the behaviour of the professional librarians in public-, school- and research libraries in specific crucial situations. The material was obtained by observations/participations (over 10 years) in the daily work in Swedish libraries by non-structured interviews and “free” discussions with librarians and library visitors. Over 200 interviews with 87 librarians and over 300 discussions with 261 library visitors are the fundament of the empirical basis of my study. These findings build up a theoretical basis (a heuristic model) grounded in ideas of deterministic chaos and complexity theory. Deterministic means, that the current state is the consequence of its preceding states, in my terms, the corporate memory in organizations. Chaotic means the sensitivity of initial condition. Deterministic chaos describes behaviour which satisfies the conditions of determinism but even shows the characteristics of chaos. The study shows that differences between the behaviour of the librarians and the predictions of the behaviour in crucial situations from the political leadership are essentially grounded in·The history of Swedish libraries (deterministic rationality and self-rationality).·The asymmetric information between librarians and politicians.·Self-organization of librarians in the daily work.·The “free” will of librarians in crucial situations grounded in the philosophy of Kant. The behaviour I could observe was studied in the following situations:·The demand of a law, which secures the existence of public- and school libraries.·The selection, development and installation of appropriate computer based information systems in public- school- and research libraries.·The GÖK- and KUR-projects, which was based on the assumption that new ways to work with the daily patterns in libraries should open the library for more visitors, book loaners and information seekers. The issues discussed in this dissertation gave the following results:·That the long time, in many cases even short time, unpredictability of librarian behaviour in for the library crucial situations is not only understandable – but also necessary for the development of the library.·That the deterministic chaotic behaviour of the librarians is generated by self-rationality, asymmetric information, and self-organization.·That the library is not a chaotic organization but a deterministic chaotic organization.Further I could see tendencies for the same behaviour in other professional, knowledge based Non Profit Organizations like schools, universities and hospitals.
