  • Late Weichselian environmental change in southern Sweden and Denmark
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quaternary Science. - : Wiley. - 0267-8179 .- 1099-1417. ; 9:2, s. 127-132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A synthesis is presented of the envronmental and climatic variations that are inferred to have occurred in southern Sweden (up to latitude 59°N) and Denmark during the Weichselian Late-glacial (14-9 ka BP). The chronology and characteristics of the main phases of deglaciation, sea-level change, periglacial activity, soil development, vegetation cover and climate change are summarised. A curve representing the main changes in temperature, including quantitative estimates based upon beetle data and using the ‘mutual climatic range’ method, is presented.

  • Seasonal oxygen depletion in a shallow sill fjord on the Swedish west coast
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Marine Systems. - : Elsevier BV. - 0924-7963 .- 1879-1573. ; 175, s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the summer of 2008, oxygen depleted water, between 5 and 12 m depth, was discovered in Sannasfjord on the Swedish west coast. The resulting sediments were black, benthic macrofauna were absent and Beggiatoa bacterial mats were a characteristic feature. This phenomenon, which was observed several years in a row, appears to be a relatively new phenomenon starting in the mid-1980s. In this study we attempt to find the underlying causes by investigating climatic effects (temperature, wind and precipitation), the local supply of nutrients from land, ecosystem change and the supply of organic material from the open Skagerrak. An analysis of long meteorological time series indicates that climatic effects are contributory, but probably not a dominating factor leading to hypoxia. Results from an advection-diffusion model solving for oxygen show that the observed increase in the river supply of nutrients has a high potential to generate hypoxia. Although complex and more difficult to quantify, it appears that ecosystem changes, with higher abundance of filamentous algae, may have played an important role. It is also possible that an enhanced supply of organic material from the open Skagerrak has contributed. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Upwelling along the Swedish west coast during the 20th century
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Continental Shelf Research. ; 23, s. 1143-1159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A time series of geostrophic winds from 1892 until the present is used to force a simple upwelling model. The model is tuned against a long time series (1930-1989) of daily hydrographic observations at Bornö station inside Gullmar fjord at the Swedish west coast. It is shown that a large part of the short-term variability at Bornö is controlled by upwelling events that can be predicted from the model. Statistical properties of upwelling events for the entire forcing period are presented as well as time series of upwelling and downwelling. Distinctive feature of the upwelling in the time series are: a declining trend between the late 1890s and 1920, an increasing trend between 1920 and 1940s and another declining trend between 1950s and 1990. After 1990 no trend is obvious. Another feature is that upwelling during summer (May-September) is much less intense after 1963. The up/downwelling is related in a qualitative way to the NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) index during January to April but there is no correlation during summer. Some possible effects on the coastal marine environment due to long-term changes of the upwelling intensity are discussed.
