  • Fatigue and reading of text on videotex
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Human Factors. - : SAGE Publications. - 0018-7208 .- 1547-8181. ; 28:3, s. 353-363
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Examined the effects of fatigue during the reading of texts presented by means of a videotex system or by means of print on paper in 3 experiments with 72 undergraduates. The 2-hr reading task was interrupted 6 times for tests of speed and accuracy in scanning a matrix of letters for given target letters, speed and accuracy in an auditory-motor reaction time (RT) task, and a free recall test of the information presented prior to each text session. The 3 experiments differed with respect to task demands. Exp I was less demanding than Exp II, which was less demanding than Exp III. It was predicted that Ss who read the texts presented on videotex would show more dramatic effects than Ss who read texts under more regular print-on-paper conditions. It was also predicted that these effects would be more pronounced for more demanding tasks. Results demonstrate only marginal effects of fatigue. It is suggested that some effects could be interpreted as more fatigue in the videotex group than in the print group. The increase in task demands resulted in longer scanning and RTs, but accuracy data were unaffected.

  • TUNE: a tool for user interface evaluation
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - Los Alamitos, Calif. : IEEE Communications Society. - 081867525X ; , s. 129-134
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper describes and discusses a prototype tool (TUNE) for computer-supported evaluation of guideline and style guide compliance in user interfaces. The aim of the tool is to facilitate the use of human factors knowledge, in the form of guidelines and style guides, GLSG, when developing user interfaces. After discussing the increased interest in GLSG compliance and reasons for computer-support in this area, TUNE is presented, together with experiences from practical use. With these experiences as a basis the possible benefits in using the tool to evaluate GLSG compliance is discussed. The paper finally presents the future development of TUNE, for example implementing more GLSG

  • Usability work and industrial system development
  • 1997
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation is about usability work and industrial system development. The first part of the thesis utilizes present descriptions of the industrial system development process to illustrate activities performed. Following this description is a definition of usability work, together with a number of methods and techniques deemed suitable for usability work. The methods and techniques are analyzed with respect to when they should be used, how to utilize them, outcome from utilization, need for supplementing methods, practical experiences and my own experiences from usability work and industrial system development. Based on these descriptions and analyses a preliminary model for integration of usability work and industrial system development, together with some preliminary experiences, are presented. Use and outcome from the application of usability work methods are described for each system development activity. Next is need for further and more comprehensive integration of usability work and industrial system development discussed. Also traditional computer support in system development is described followed by a brief discussion of its relevance for usability work. A number of simple computer-based tools aimed at studying the possibility to support development of computer systems, primarily user interface development, are then presented. Finally, possible future work is discussed, mainly focused on computer supported usability work.

  • Shame-inducing encounters. Negative emotional aspects of sickness-absentees' interactions with rehabilitation professionals
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of occupational rehabilitation. - 1053-0487 .- 1573-3688. ; 13:3, s. 183-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is little knowledge on how sickness absentees experience encounters with rehabilitation professionals. This paper explores and describes negative emotions ("shame " in a broad sense) experienced by individuals on sick leave in their interactions with rehabilitation professionals. We performed a qualitative analysis of data from five focus-group interviews. The participants had experience of sickness absence with back diagnoses and discussed factors that facilitate or impede return to work. Reports of demeaning experiences in encounters with rehabilitation workers were frequent and could be divided into two major categories: 1) subjects perceived the behavior of rehabilitation professionals as distanced in a negative way, and felt that they were treated in an indifferent and nonchalant manner or fairly routinely, 2) subjects felt that they were disqualified, which included being discredited or belittled. This explorative study indicates the need for further, more directed investigations of emotional aspects of interactions between sickness absentees and rehabilitation professionals.
