    • BACKGROUND: People with schizophrenia have an increased risk of suicide and attempted suicide is suggested to be an important risk factor.AIM: Our objective was to assess the cumulative survival, predictive values and odds ratios of attempted suicide for suicide in a long-term cohort of patients with schizophrenia spectrum psychosis with and without previous attempted suicide.METHOD: Inpatients (n=224) hospitalized with schizophrenia spectrum psychosis were followed for a mean of 25 years. All patients were followed up for causes of death. Information on suicide attempt before the end of the observation period was retrieved from medical records.RESULTS: Eight percent died by suicide during the follow-up. Eighteen percent of suicide attempters died by suicide. Two percent of non-attempters died by suicide. There was a strong association between previous suicide attempt and suicide in men and women. Odds ratio for attempters vs. non-attempters was 10. Suicide risk was almost three times higher in male than female suicide attempters.CONCLUSION: Previous attempted suicide is an important risk factor for suicide in both men and women with schizophrenia spectrum psychosis, particularly in male suicide attempters. The suicide risk remains high over a long period. Continuous assessment of risk factors and appropriate treatment are crucial for this patient group to prevent suicide.

    • INTRODUCTION: Patients with schizophrenia have higher rates of mortality than the general population. Lower concentrations of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) monoamine metabolites homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) have been associated with suicidal, aggressive and impulsive behavior. Mortality has been suggested as a measure of impulsivity and a relationship between early death and lower concentrations of CSF monoamine metabolites has been reported but the studies are few with short periods of follow-up and small numbers.AIM: The objective of this study was to investigate a relationship between early death and concentrations of CSF 5-HIAA and HVA.METHODS: Three hundred and eighty-five inpatients with schizophrenia spectrum psychosis were lumbar punctured in a standardized manner and followed for a median of 26 years. Patients were searched to identify those who had died. Causes of death were obtained from the Causes of Death Register.RESULTS: During the time of follow-up, 97 patients died. Schizophrenia spectrum psychosis patients died at an earlier age from both natural and unnatural causes of death. No significant associations were found between CSF 5-HIAA and HVA concentrations and non-suicidal death. Attempted suicide was not a risk factor for non-suicidal death at younger age.CONCLUSION: Patients with schizophrenia spectrum psychosis die at an earlier age from both natural and unnatural causes of death. Attempted suicide is not a risk factor for non-suicidal death at younger age. Low concentrations of CSF HVA and 5-HIAA were not a risk factor for non-suicidal death at younger age in schizophrenia spectrum psychosis.

    • η′-Cu6Sn5, a suggested anode material in Li-ion batteries, has been studied by 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy together with the lithiated phase Li2CuSn. Full-potential electronic structure calculations were carried out using full potential LAPW (linearized augmented plane wave) within the local density approximation. The calculated hyperfine parameters, isomer shift and electric quadrupole splitting, were compared to the experimental. In presence of more than one Sn-site, the theoretical values provide a good starting guess to fit a single Mössbauer absorption peak to different sites.

    • The paper presents a learning environment where recording engineering students work together with studio musician students. A learning environment, in our definition, is a setting for learning experience, and therefore dependent on conditions being as realistic as possible. The purpose of the empirical study was to gather data regarding possible learning experiences among sound engineering alumni that work as professionals in the recording industry. Alumni value the campus learning environment highly and consider sociocultural skills acquired to be of high importance for their professional careers, where co-operation with producers and musicians is essential

    • Soot particles strongly absorb radiation in the visible and infrared spectral regions, and the soot interaction with laser light during laser diagnostic interrogation leads to particle heating and often to subsequent sublimation. Consequently, laser-heated particles transfer heat to the ambient gas leading to local gas heating, a process that has received minor attention so far in the diagnostic community. In the present work, this specific local gas heating is measured in a pump-probe-type experiment. A 1064-nm laser beam heated the soot particles in an ethylene/ air diffusion flame (on a Gulder-burner) with known soot volume fraction, and a two-beam rotational coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) setup was used to probe the local gas temperature on time scales from nanoseconds to milliseconds. The temperature of the heated particles was simultaneously probed using a two-color laser-induced incandescence (2C-LII) detection system. The results show that laser heating of soot particles from flame temperatures to sublimation temperatures leads to local gas heating of similar to 100 K at a soot volume fraction of 4 ppm, in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The implication of these results to the application of laser diagnostic techniques is briefly discussed. (C) 2014 The Combustion Institute. Published by Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

    • Background: Optimal oxygen targets in patients resuscitated after cardiac arrest are uncertain. The primary aim of this study was to describe the values of partial pressure of oxygen values (PaO2) and the episodes of hypoxemia and hyperoxemia occurring within the first 72 h of mechanical ventilation in out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients. The secondary aim was to evaluate the association of PaO2 with patients’ outcome. Methods: Preplanned secondary analysis of the targeted hypothermia versus targeted normothermia after OHCA (TTM2) trial. Arterial blood gases values were collected from randomization every 4 h for the first 32 h, and then, every 8 h until day 3. Hypoxemia was defined as PaO2 < 60 mmHg and severe hyperoxemia as PaO2 > 300 mmHg. Mortality and poor neurological outcome (defined according to modified Rankin scale) were collected at 6 months. Results: 1418 patients were included in the analysis. The mean age was 64 ± 14 years, and 292 patients (20.6%) were female. 24.9% of patients had at least one episode of hypoxemia, and 7.6% of patients had at least one episode of severe hyperoxemia. Both hypoxemia and hyperoxemia were independently associated with 6-month mortality, but not with poor neurological outcome. The best cutoff point associated with 6-month mortality for hypoxemia was 69 mmHg (Risk Ratio, RR = 1.009, 95% CI 0.93–1.09), and for hyperoxemia was 195 mmHg (RR = 1.006, 95% CI 0.95–1.06). The time exposure, i.e., the area under the curve (PaO2-AUC), for hyperoxemia was significantly associated with mortality (p = 0.003). Conclusions: In OHCA patients, both hypoxemia and hyperoxemia are associated with 6-months mortality, with an effect mediated by the timing exposure to high values of oxygen. Precise titration of oxygen levels should be considered in this group of patients. Trial registration: clinicaltrials.gov NCT02908308, Registered September 20, 2016.

    • Purpose: The optimal ventilatory settings in patients after cardiac arrest and their association with outcome remain unclear. The aim of this study was to describe the ventilatory settings applied in the first 72 h of mechanical ventilation in patients after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and their association with 6-month outcomes. Methods: Preplanned sub-analysis of the Target Temperature Management-2 trial. Clinical outcomes were mortality and functional status (assessed by the Modified Rankin Scale) 6 months after randomization. Results: A total of 1848 patients were included (mean age 64 [Standard Deviation, SD = 14] years). At 6 months, 950 (51%) patients were alive and 898 (49%) were dead. Median tidal volume (VT) was 7 (Interquartile range, IQR = 6.2–8.5) mL per Predicted Body Weight (PBW), positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) was 7 (IQR = 5–9) cmH20, plateau pressure was 20 cmH20 (IQR = 17–23), driving pressure was 12 cmH20 (IQR = 10–15), mechanical power 16.2 J/min (IQR = 12.1–21.8), ventilatory ratio was 1.27 (IQR = 1.04–1.6), and respiratory rate was 17 breaths/minute (IQR = 14–20). Median partial pressure of oxygen was 87 mmHg (IQR = 75–105), and partial pressure of carbon dioxide was 40.5 mmHg (IQR = 36–45.7). Respiratory rate, driving pressure, and mechanical power were independently associated with 6-month mortality (omnibus p-values for their non-linear trajectories: p < 0.0001, p = 0.026, and p = 0.029, respectively). Respiratory rate and driving pressure were also independently associated with poor neurological outcome (odds ratio, OR = 1.035, 95% confidence interval, CI = 1.003–1.068, p = 0.030, and OR = 1.005, 95% CI = 1.001–1.036, p = 0.048). A composite formula calculated as [(4*driving pressure) + respiratory rate] was independently associated with mortality and poor neurological outcome. Conclusions: Protective ventilation strategies are commonly applied in patients after cardiac arrest. Ventilator settings in the first 72 h after hospital admission, in particular driving pressure and respiratory rate, may influence 6-month outcomes.

    • A novel Phoswich design based on new generation scintillator crystals is presented. The detector composed from a combination of a LaBr3(Ce) with a LaCl3(Ce) crystal in one cylinder coupled to a photo multiplier tube has been tested both for incident gamma rays in the range of 0.3–6 MeV, as well as for high energy protons in the range 120–180 MeV. The Phoswich assembly has not significantly deteriorated the energy resolution, which for 662 KeV gamma rays gives a resolution of 4.5%, while for high energy protons (Ep=180 MeV) an energy resolution of 1% was obtained. It is shown that the signals from the two crystals can be separated in an event by event based mode. Using direct digitizing of the detector pulse an off-line pulse-shape analysis was performed built either on a total to tail or total to pulse height method in order to fully identify the incoming radiation. Our aim with this R&D is to in the future build a detector which is able to detect with good efficiency and resolution over a wide energy range; 0.1–30 MeV gamma rays and 20–400 MeV protons. Monte Carlo simulations made in order to design the next prototype are presented.
