  • Incentives and Inequalities in Family and Working Life
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Essay I: Same-gender teachers may affect educational preferences by acting as role models for their students. I study the importance of the gender composition of teachers in math and science during lower secondary school on the likelihood to continue in math-intensive tracks in the next levels of education. I use population wide register data from Sweden and control for family fixed effects to account for sorting into schools. According to my results, the gender gap in graduating with a math-intensive track in upper secondary school would decrease by 16 percent if the share of female math and science teachers would be changed from none to all at lower secondary school. The gap in math-related university degrees would decrease by 22 percent from the same treatment. The performance is not affected by the higher share of female science teachers, only the likelihood to choose science, suggesting that the effects arise because female teachers serve as role models for female students.

  • Vi tar fram en handfast plan för en omstart av Sverige
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Dagens Nyheter. - 1101-2447. ; :27 april

  • Workfare for the old and long-term unemployed
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Labour Economics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-5371 .- 1879-1034. ; 25, s. 25-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We estimate the effects of conditioning benefits on program participation among older long-term unemployed workers. We exploit a Swedish reform which reduced UI duration from 90 to 60 weeks for a group of older unemployed workers in a setting where workers who exhausted their benefits received unchanged transfers if they agreed to participate in a work practice program. Our results show that job finding increased as a result of the shorter duration of passive benefits. The time profile of the job-finding effects suggests that the results are due to deterrence during the program-entry phase. We find no impact on ensuing job durations or wages, suggesting that the increased job-finding rate was driven by increased search intensity rather than lower reservation wages. A crude cost-benefit analysis suggests that the reform reduced the combined cost of programs and transfers.

  • Fixed Wage Contracts and Monetary Non-Neutrality
  • 2016
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We study the importance of wage rigidities for the monetary policy transmissionmechanism. Using uniquely rich micro data on Swedish wage negotiations,we isolate periods when the labor market is covered by xed wagecontracts. Importantly, negotiations are coordinated in time but their seasonalpatterns are far from deterministic. Using a VAR model, we documentthat monetary policy shocks have a substantially larger impact on productionduring xed wage episodes as compared to the average response. The resultsare not driven by the periodic structure, nor the seasonality, of the renegotiationepisodes.

    • We study the importance of wage rigidities for the monetary policy transmission mechanism. Using uniquely rich micro data on Swedish wage negotiations, we isolate periods when the labor market is covered by fixed-wage contracts. Importantly, negotiations are coordinated in time but their seasonal patterns are far from deterministic. Using a two-regime VAR model, we document that monetary policy shocks have a larger impact on production during fixed-wage episodes as compared to the average response. The results do not seem to be driven by the periodic structure, nor the seasonality, of the renegotiation episodes.

  • Evaluating Microfoundations for Aggregate Price Rigidities : Evidence from Matched Firm-Level Data on Product Prices and Unit Labor Cost
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The American Economic Review. - : American Economic Association. - 0002-8282 .- 1944-7981. ; 102:4, s. 1571-1595
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using matched data on product-level prices and the producing firm's unit labor cost, we find a moderate pass-through of current idiosyncratic marginal-cost changes. Also, the response does not vary across firms facing very different idiosyncratic shock variances, but identical aggregate conditions. These results do not fit the predictions of Mackowiak and Wiederholt (2009). Neither do firms react strongly to predictable marginal-cost changes, as expected from Mankiw and Reis (2002). We find that firms consider both current and expected future marginal cost when setting prices. This points toward impediments to continuous price adjustments as a key driver of monetary non-neutrality.

  • Firm-Level Shocks and Labour Flows
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Economic Journal. - : Oxford University Press. - 0013-0133 .- 1468-0297. ; 131:634, s. 598-623
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyse how labour flows respond to permanent idiosyncratic shifts in firm-level production functions and demand curves using very detailed Swedish micro data. Shocks to firms' physical productivity have only modest effects on firm-level employment decisions. In contrast, we document rapid and substantial employment adjustments through hires and separations in response to firm-level demand shocks. The choice of adjustment margin depends on the sign of the shock: firms adjust through increased hires if these shocks are positive and through increased separations if the shocks are negative.

  • Wage Adjustment and Productivity Shocks
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Economic Journal. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0013-0133 .- 1468-0297. ; 126:595, s. 1739-1773
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study how workers’ wages respond to changes in firm-level physical productivity using Swedish data. We find that technology shocks affect workers’ wages through both internal and external forces. Wages respond three times as much to physical productivity shocks that are shared with outside firms within the same sector as they do to firm-level physical productivity shocks. The larger impact of sectoral physical productivity is related to the degree of within-sector labour mobility, suggesting that the productivity evolution among firms that draw their labour from the same market segment is a crucial determinant of the wage growth of incumbent workers.
