  • Spontaneous Charge Transfer and Dipole Formation at the Interface Between P3HT and PCBM
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Advanced Energy Materials. - : Wiley-VCH Verlag Berlin. - 1614-6832 .- 1614-6840. ; 1:5, s. 792-797
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the pursuit of developing new materials for more efficient bulk-heterojunction solar cells, the blend poly (3-hexylthiophene):[ 6,6]-phenyl-C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) serves as an important model system. The success of the P3HT: PCBM blend comes from efficient charge generation and transport with low recombination. There is not, however, a good microscopic picture of what causes these, hindering the development of new material systems. In this report UV photoelectron spectroscopy measurements on both regiorandom-(rra) and regioregular-(rr) P3HT are presented, and the results are interpreted using the Integer Charge Transfer model. The results suggest that spontaneous charge transfer from P3HT to PCBM occurs after heat treatment of P3HT: PCBM blends. The resulting formation of an interfacial dipole creates an extra barrier at the interface explaining the reduced (non-)geminate recombination with increased charge generation in heat treated rr-P3HT: PCBM blends. Extensive photoinduced absorption measurements using both above-and below-bandgap excitation light are presented, in good agreement with the suggested dipole formation.

  • Swedish National Multicenter Study on Head and Neck Cancer of Unknown Primary: Prognostic Factors and Impact of Treatment on Survival
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Archives of Otorhinolaryngology. - : Georg Thieme Verlag KG. - 1809-9777 .- 1809-4864. ; 25:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction Head and neck cancer of unknown primary (HNCUP) is a rare condition whose prognostic factors that are significant for survival vary between studies. No randomized treatment study has been performed thus far, and the optimal treatment is not established. Objective The present study aimed to explore various prognostic factors and compare the two main treatments for HNCUP: neck dissection and (chemo) radiation vs primary (chemo) radiation. Methods A national multicenter study was performed with data from the Swedish Head and Neck Cancer Register (SweHNCR) and from the patients' medical records from 2008 to 2012. Results Two-hundred and sixty HNCUP patients were included. The tumors were HPVpositive in 80%. The overall 5-year survival rate of patients treated with curative intent was 71%. Age (p < 0.001), performance status (p = 0.036), and N stage (p = 0.046) were significant factors for overall survival according to the multivariable analysis. Treatment with neck dissection and (chemo) radiation (122 patients) gave an overall 5-year survival of 73%, and treatment with primary (chemo) radiation (87 patients) gave an overall 5-year survival of 71%, with no significant difference in overall or disease-free survival between the 2 groups. Conclusions Age, performance status, and N stage were significant prognostic factors. Treatment with neck dissection and ( chemo) radiation and primary (chemo)

  • The crosscurrents of Swedish mathematics teacher education
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International perspectives on mathematics teacher education. - Waxhaw, NC, USA : Information Age Publishing. - 9781648026317 - 9781648026294 - 9781648026300 ; , s. 9-48
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As with any programs in teacher education, Swedish mathematics teacher education is influenced by changing political winds, developments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), culture, history, PISA results, research-based program designs, and a fair amount of passion. Content and outcomes are nationally determined and include the requirement of a strong research foundation, but this is often not how practcing techers work, which exerts its own pull on teacher education. The specific implementations of programs take different forms at the universities that offer mathematics teacher education. In order to provide a comprehensive yet meaningful ntroduction to both the current system and current practices, we describe the overall organization of Swedish mathematics teacher education, and then offer short cases of implemented programs. To ensure inclusivity, the various parts are written by mathematics educators from the respective institutions. In this way, both variation across mathematicas teacher education for diffrent grade levels and variation across different institutions working with the same national directives can be distinguished. Issues such as the academization of teacher education are problematized, as are other forces that constitute the crosscurrents in Swedish mathematics teacher education.

  • Molecular oxygen in the rho Ophiuchi cloud
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Astronomy & Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 466:3, s. 5-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context: Molecular oxygen, O2, has been expected historically to be an abundant component of the chemical species in molecular clouds and, as such, an important coolant of the dense interstellar medium. However, a number of attempts from both ground and from space have failed to detect O2 emission.Aims: The work described here uses heterodyne spectroscopy from space to search for molecular oxygen in the interstellar medium. Methods: The Odin satellite carries a 1.1 m sub-millimeter dish and a dedicated 119 GHz receiver for the ground state line of O2. Starting in 2002, the star forming molecular cloud core ρ Oph A was observed with Odin for 34 days during several observing runs. Results: We detect a spectral line at v_LSR =+3.5 km s-1 with Δ v_FWHM=1.5 km s-1, parameters which are also common to other species associated with ρ Oph A. This feature is identified as the O2 (NJ = 11 - 1_0) transition at 118 750.343 MHz.Conclusions: The abundance of molecular oxygen, relative to H{2} , is 5 × 10-8 averaged over the Odin beam. This abundance is consistently lower than previously reported upper limits.Based on observations with Odin, a Swedish-led satellite project funded jointly by the Swedish National Space Board (SNSB), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the National Technology Agency of Finland (Tekes) and Centre National d'Étude Spatiale (CNES). The Swedish Space Corporation has been the industrial prime contractor and also is operating the satellite. Appendix A is only available in electronic form at http://www.aanda.org

  • The amino-terminal heptapeptide of the algesic substance P provides analgesic effect in relieving chronic neuropathic pain
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Pharmacology. - : Elsevier. - 0014-2999 .- 1879-0712. ; 892
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Of painful conditions, somatic pain of acute nociceptive origin can be effectively managed clinically, while neuropathic pain of chronic neuropathy origin is difficult to control. For molecules involved in pain sensation, substance P (SP) is algesic, exacerbating painful sensation, while its amino-terminal fragment, heptapeptide SP(1-7), confers biological activities different from its full-length parent neuropeptide precursor. We previously demonstrated SP(1-7) interaction with pain processing to alleviate chronic pain. Here we evaluated SP(1-7) and its C-terminal amidated analogue SP(1-7) amide, together with SP and opioid agonist DAMGO. We tested mouse behaviors of both acute somatic pain in tail-flick latency assay, and neuropathic pain in sciatic nerve injury model of chronic constriction injury (CCI). DAMGO produced dose-dependent analgesia for somatic pain as expected, so did both SP(1-7) and its analogue SP(1-7) amide, while SP yielded the opposite effect of algesia, in a phenomenon we termed `contrintus', meaning 'opposite from within' to denote that two peptides of the same origin (SP and its metabolic fragment SP(1-7)) produced opposite effects. In CCI model, DAMGO showed a general reduction in allodynia sensitivity for both nerve-injured and normal paws, without selective effect for neuropathic pain, consistent with clinical observation that opioids are less effective for chronic neuropathic pain. On the other hand, both SP(1-7) and SP(1-7) amide displayed dose-dependent anti-allodynia effect that is selective for neuropathic pain. These findings suggest that SP(1-7) and its analogue may be useful for developing pharmaceuticals to treat neuropathic pain.

  • Changes in carbohydrate and glucosinolate composition in white cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) during blanching and treatment with acetic acid
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Food Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-7072 .- 0308-8146. ; 95:2, s. 226-236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of blanching and treatment with white vinegar containing acetic acid on dietary fibre, low-molecular-weight carbohydrates and glucosinolates was studied in two cultivars of white cabbage (Heckla and Predikant). The total content of dietary fibre and low-molecular-weight carbohydrates was similar in both cultivars (24 and 60 g/100 g DM, respectively), while the distribution between soluble and insoluble fibre differed (19% was soluble in Heckla versus 26% in Predikant, P < 0.01). Further, Heckla contained higher amounts of glucose and sucrose, while the content of fructose and total glucosinolates was lower than in Predikant. The content of individual glucosinolates differed between the two cultivars. During blanching there was a loss of dry substance (30-34 g/100 g DM), where low-molecular-weight carbohydrates primarily explained the loss (82-90%), but some of the loss was also dietary fibre (about 8%), both soluble fibre containing uronic acids (mainly Predikant) and insoluble ones containing glucose (mainly Heckla). The glucosinolate levels decreased substantially in both cultivars, although the total loss was higher in Predikant (74%) than in Heckla (50%). The individual glucosinolates were affected to different degrees (15-91%). During souring with acetic acid, the content of dietary fibre (primarily insoluble ones) decreased further, while the content of low-molecular-weight carbohydrates was less affected. The total content of glucosinolates was not affected in Heckla but was further reduced in Predikant. There was, however, a substantial increase in 4-methoxyglucobrassicin in both cultivars. It is concluded that blanching and souring decrease the content of carbohydrates and glucosinolates to a great extent and both cultivars behaved similarly. However, individual components were affected differently in the two cultivars. (c) 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

  • Effects of boiling on dietary components in fresh and stored white cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. cap).
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Food Science. - : Wiley. - 0022-1147 .- 1750-3841. ; 68:5, s. 1615-1621
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of boiling (10 min) and how differences in cultivars (n = 6), maturity (n = 2), and storage (n = 3) may affect dietary fiber in white cabbage were studied. A great variation in total dietary fiber content between boiled cabbage samples was seen (17.7 to 31.7 g/100 g dry weight basis). Total and insoluble dietary fiber following boiling could be predicted from the initial amount. Average losses for early and late cultivars were similar (about 10%) and were mainly due to insoluble polymers consisting of glucose and partly of uronic acids. The early cultivar ‘Balbro’ was least affected by heat treatment: only 2% total dietary fiber was lost. Harvesting before physiological maturity and short-term storage increased the loss of soluble polymers (pectic substances), whereas long-term storage decreased the loss.

  • Effects of harvest time and storage on dietary fibre components in various cultivars of white cabbage (Brassica oleracea var capitata)
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture. - : Wiley. - 1097-0010 .- 0022-5142. ; 82:12, s. 1405-1411
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of harvest time and storage on dietary fibre content and composition was investigated in six cultivars of white cabbage (Brassica oleracea var capitata). Three cultivars were of early maturity type (SW Nordpol, Rolly and Balbro) and three of late maturity type (Predikant, Hanna and Lion). The average total dietary fibre (TDF) content was 241 g kg(-1) dry matter (DM) (CV = 13), of which approximately 25% was soluble (CV = 15). The main dietary fibre components were glucose (37%), uronic acid (32%), arabinose (12%) and galactose (8%) residues. Early cultivars generally had a lower TDF content than late maturity types, due to a lower amount of both insoluble (arabinose, galactose and glucose) and soluble (arabinose) polymers. An early cultivar, Rolly, had the highest solubility, 33%, versus 25 +/- 4% for the other cultivars. The early cultivar SW Nordpol had a similar TDF content and proportion of soluble dietary fibre (SDF) to the late cultivar Hanna, but the dietary fibre composition was different, with the early cultivar having a lower proportion of arabinose residues. Storage for 6 weeks had minor effects on the dietary fibre. After further storage of the late maturity cultivars, there was an increase in insoluble dietary fibre (IDF) (glucose and uronic acid residues) and a decrease in SDF (arabinose and galactose residues). As a consequence the solubility of TDF decreased from 29 to 19% on average. Harvesting before physiological maturity was reached resulted in a somewhat lower content of TDF and 11317 for two cultivars (Predikant and Hanna), while SDF was more or less unaffected for all cultivars. Long-term storage had fewer effects on cabbage harvested prior to maturity than when harvested at the right physiological maturity. It is concluded that the observed differences between cultivars and after long term storage are of such magnitude that they may affect nutritional properties of the dietary fibre.

  • On the possibility of using high pressure treatment to modify physico-chemical properties of dietary fibre in white cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata)
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Innovative Food Science & Emerging Technologies. - : Elsevier BV. - 1466-8564. ; 5:2, s. 171-177
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The possibility of using high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) to modify the physico-chemical properties of dietary fibre polysaccharides in white cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) was studied. Two cultivars (Heckla and Predikant) were subjected to high pressure treatment (400 and 500 MPa) at different temperatures (20, 50 and 80 °C). The total dietary fibre (TDF) content was only slightly affected by HHP. However, considerable effects were generally seen in the distribution between soluble and insoluble fibre at increased pressure. When the pressure applied was 400 MPa, the proportion of soluble fibre in the cultivar Heckla was reduced at all temperatures. No additional effects were seen when the pressure was increased to 500 MPa. For the cultivar Predikant the pressure generally had to be increased to 500 MPa to attain the same effects. An exception was pressure treatment at 80 °C, where a pressure of 400 MPa was sufficient. The total dietary fibre content in unprocessed cabbage (0.1 MPa and 20 °C) was lower in the cultivar Heckla than in Predikant due to lower contents of insoluble polymers containing glucose and uronic acids. This was the case for most temperatures and pressures. It is concluded that the solubility of the dietary fibre in white cabbage can be affected by high pressure temperature treatment, which may be of importance when producing foods with specific health effects.
