    • We detail the sensitivity of the proposed liquid xenon DARWIN observatory to solar neutrinos via elastic electron scattering. We find that DARWIN will have the potential to measure the fluxes of five solar neutrino components: pp, 7Be, 13N, 15O and pep. The precision of the 13N, 15O and pep components is hindered by the double-beta decay of 136Xe and, thus, would benefit from a depleted target. A high-statistics observation of pp neutrinos would allow us to infer the values of the electroweak mixing angle, sin2 theta w, and the electron-type neutrino survival probability, Pee, in the electron recoil energy region from a few keV up to 200 keV for the first time, with relative precision of 5% and 4%, respectively, with 10 live years of data and a 30 tonne fiducial volume. An observation of pp and 7Be neutrinos would constrain the neutrino-inferred solar luminosity down to 0.2%. A combination of all flux measurements would distinguish between the high- (GS98) and low-metallicity (AGS09) solar models with 2.1-2.5 sigma significance, independent of external measurements from other experiments or a measurement of 8B neutrinos through coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering in DARWIN. Finally, we demonstrate that with a depleted target DARWIN may be sensitive to the neutrino capture process of 131Xe.

  • Burden of disease attributable to risk factors in European countries: a scoping literature review

    • Objectives: Within the framework of the burden of disease (BoD) approach, disease and injury burden estimates attributable to risk factors are a useful guide for policy formulation and priority setting in disease prevention. Considering the important differences in methods, and their impact on burden estimates, we conducted a scoping literature review to: (1) map the BoD assessments including risk factors performed across Europe; and (2) identify the methodological choices in comparative risk assessment (CRA) and risk assessment methods. Methods: We searched multiple literature databases, including grey literature websites and targeted public health agencies websites. Results: A total of 113 studies were included in the synthesis and further divided into independent BoD assessments (54 studies) and studies linked to the Global Burden of Disease (59 papers). Our results showed that the methods used to perform CRA varied substantially across independent European BoD studies. While there were some methodological choices that were more common than others, we did not observe patterns in terms of country, year or risk factor. Each methodological choice can affect the comparability of estimates between and within countries and/or risk factors, since they might significantly influence the quantification of the attributable burden. From our analysis we observed that the use of CRA was less common for some types of risk factors and outcomes. These included environmental and occupational risk factors, which are more likely to use bottom-up approaches for health outcomes where disease envelopes may not be available. Conclusions: Our review also highlighted misreporting, the lack of uncertainty analysis and the under-investigation of causal relationships in BoD studies. Development and use of guidelines for performing and reporting BoD studies will help understand differences, avoid misinterpretations thus improving comparability among estimates.

  • Literature review - Energy saving potential of user-centered integrated lighting solutions

    • This report presents lessons learned from twenty-five worldwide real-life case studies implementing the integration of daylighting and electric lighting. The case studies were monitored with respect to energy use for lighting, visual performance, non-visual performance, and users’ satisfaction. The monitoring is largely based on field measurements, but it is also complemented with simulations and calculations where needed.The report is divided in two parts. The first part provides an overview of the case studies and the overall lessons learned. The second part provides factsheets for each of the case studies; the factsheets include details on the monitoring, results, and specific lessons learned.Based on the lessons learned from the case studies, this report concludes that:• The energy demand for lighting is drastically reduced thanks to the combined effect of more efficient light sources, advances in controls, and raised awareness in the integration of daylighting and electric lighting.• Integrative lighting is currently driving the innovation in lighting technology and wider implementation is expected as knowledge in the field of non-visual requirements for lighting expands.• However, the current integration of the integrative lighting concept with daylighting in practice is limited, which may result in significant energy rebound (increases).• Daylighting integration is of utmost importance for achieving quality beyond energy savings.• Integrated daylighting and electric lighting design is facing new challenges: questions connected with comfort and health are yet to be answered.

    • In this paper, strategies for a holistic integration of multiple HVDC links into existing power systems are presented. High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) links can support the operation of AC grids on different timescales. Contrary to AC transmission lines, the power flow on HVDC links can be freely controlled. Due to their ability of rapidly controlling the power transmitted, they can help to stabilize the dynamic system response of interconnected power systems, e.g. providing fast frequency response. Moreover, they can be an important tool in controlling and in optimizing the operation of interconnected power system. In this paper, different strategies are presented, then their benefits and potential challenges are discussed.
