  • Bilateral shipping and trade : Swedish-Finnish experiences in the post-war period
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores the bilateral shipping and trade between Finland and Sweden during the post-war period. It comprises five articles and one introductory chapter for which the common point of departure is the growth and transformation of bilateral trade and shipping. The first two articles analyse the structural change of bilateral trade from a national and regional perspective. The three following articles provide an overview and analysis of the ferry shipping. By integrating the perspective in these articles in the introductory chapter and by providing a long historical record, the change of economic relations between Finland and Sweden in the post-war period is discerned. This thesis applies an economic historical approach and is founded on various fields of social science. The issue of trade is analysed within the framework of conventional and new trade theory, and the analysis of ferry shipping is governed by economic and geographic theories. The studies on trade shows that the transformation of production seen in Finland and Sweden meant that the trade increasingly became dependent on an exchange of products arising from matching industries. In turn the foreign trade arising from the Northern part of Finland and Sweden was still dominated by so called inter-industry trade. In addition to these results, the studies of ferry services shows that the growth of vehicles and passengers conveyance, together with the expanded onboard services, also intensified the commercial exchange. Due of the multi-output structure, the ferry service efficiently met the growing demand of travel and trade. The main conclusion of this thesis is that the convergence of incomes and economic structure had a significant impact on bilateral trade and ferry shipping. In addition the process of economic integration, technological advances together with specific policies issued on shipping also contributed to strengthen the economic ties between Finland and Sweden.

  • United and divided : Early modern economic history in Finnish and Swedish academic literature
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Swedish and Finnish Historiographies of the Swedish Realm, c. 1520–1809 : Shared Past, Different Interpretations? - Shared Past, Different Interpretations?. - 9781003219255 ; , s. 171-195
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this chapter, we analyze Finnish and Swedish economic history research on these countries’ common past (prior to 1809) and the early modern era (defined here as between 1500 and 1850). Using extensive bibliometric databases, we show that even when they focus on the early modern era, economic historians most often analyze Finland and Sweden in terms of their modern borders. Researchers based in Finland are more likely to take both countries into account than researchers from Sweden or anywhere else. This does not necessarily reflect an integrated analysis of the region’s common past but is often rather a comparison of Finnish and Swedish economic performance.

  • Always in crisis, always a solution? : The Nordic model as a political and scholarly concept
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Nordic Economic, Social and Political Model. - Abingdon; New York : Routledge. - 9780367724405 - 9780367134754 - 9780429026690 ; , s. 1-19
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter analyses the Nordic model as an empirical, policy-based phenomenon and as a political idea and a trope for the imagination through the lenses of social scientists and historians. The emergence and development of the Nordic model as a concept in international discussion can be roughly outlined by a quantitative bibliometric analysis using Google Books Ngrams. The notion of a distinctive Nordic social model began to attract international attention during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The prime minister of Denmark, Anker Jørgensen, answered by defining the common core of the Nordic model as democracy, welfare state, peace, solidarity with the Third World and, despite the differences between the Nordic countries, a strong cultural affiliation. In the Nordic context, scholarship on the Nordic model is a vast and lively field – impossible to subsume in a way that accurately mirrors its diversity and complexity.

  • A Historical Investigation of the Strategic Process within Family Firms
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Management History. - 1355-252X .- 1758-776X. ; 12:1, s. 100-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose of this paper: The primary purpose of this paper was to perform an in-depth analysis of the strategic process that occurs within family firms.Design/methodology/approach: This study analyzed the historical development of the growth strategies of five family firms in the United States, Finland, and Sweden.Findings: The results of this study suggest that family firms typically adopt conservative strategies in the early part of their life cycle. During their formative years, family firms often implement financially conservative strategies and place an emphasis on maintaining tight control of the strategic decision-making process within the family unit. However, the competitive pressures experienced by family firms over time often force these companies to embrace a more entrepreneurial posture during the latter stages of their life cycle.Research Implications: The stage in the company life cycle plays an important role in determining the strategic behavior of family firms. Future research aimed at replicating the results of this study may help shed further light on the strategic process that occurs within family firms.Practical Implications: Although the firms examined in this study were from various cultures, their strategic development over time was very similar. This tentatively suggests that the evolution of the strategic process that occurs within family firms may be generalizable across cultures. What is original/value of paper: Our findings indicate that there may be an important distinction between family firms and entrepreneurial organizations. That is, all family firms are not necessarily entrepreneurial, especially early on in their company life cycle.Paper Type: Research paperKey Words: Family Firms, Pulp and Paper Industry, Entrepreneurship, United States, Sweden, Finland
