  • User-centric context-aware mobile applications for embodied music listening
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: User Centric Media. - Heidelberg : Springer Berlin. - 9783642126307 ; , s. 21-30
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper surveys a collection of sample applications for networked user-centric context-aware embodied music listening. The applications have been designed and developed in the framework of the EU-ICT Project SAME (www.sameproject.eu) and have been presented at Agora Festival (IRCAM, Paris, France) in June 2009. All of them address in different ways the concept of embodied, active listening to music, i.e., enabling listeners to interactively operate in real-time on the music content by means of their movements and gestures as captured by mobile devices. In the occasion of the Agora Festival the applications have also been evaluated by both expert and non-expert users

  • Divergent responses of beta-diversity among organism groups to a strong environmental gradient
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ecosphere. - : Wiley. - 2150-8925 .- 2150-8925. ; 7:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A limited understanding of how variation in the species composition among communities (i.e., beta-diversity) changes along natural environmental gradients, and the mechanisms responsible, inhibits our ability to understand large-scale biodiversity change resulting from either natural or anthropogenic drivers. Therefore, our aim was to test key drivers of beta-diversity patterns along a strong, natural environmental gradient for seven widely different organisms groups, that is, root-associated fungi, litter fungi, soil nematodes, vascular plants, epiphytic lichens, beetles, and spiders. Using previously published community-level data from boreal-forested islands, we calculated alpha-diversity and beta-diversity for each of the seven organism groups. Out of several available environmental variables, we identified four variables, that is, ecosystem age, total C storage, net primary productivity (NPP), and N-to-P ratio, as potential predictors of variation in beta-diversity. We found that ecosystem age was the variable with the highest overall importance. We then used two different methods to quantify the relative importance of stochastic and deterministic processes underlying patterns in beta-diversity along the ecosystem age gradient, and our detailed knowledge based on prior data collection in the study system to mechanistically explain among-group differences in these patterns. We found divergent responses in beta-diversity along the age gradient for the seven different organism groups, due to among-group differences in the relative importance of deterministic vs. stochastic community assembly, and attributed these results to reliance on resources from different energy channels that are not always related to NPP. Our results highlight the necessity to consider the importance of taxon-specific resources, and not only NPP, to obtain an understanding of beta-diversity patterns among organism groups and ecosystems, as well as large-scale patterns in biodiversity. They therefore also suggest that management and protection of beta-biodiversity in the landscape requires explicit consideration of a wide range of habitats.

  • NF-E2-related factor 2 activation boosts antioxidant defenses and ameliorates inflammatory and amyloid properties in human Presenilin-1 mutated Alzheimer's disease astrocytes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: GLIA. - : Wiley. - 0894-1491 .- 1098-1136. ; 68:3, s. 589-599
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common dementia affecting a vast number of individuals and significantly impairing quality of life. Despite extensive research in animal models and numerous promising treatment trials, there is still no curative treatment for AD. Astrocytes, the most common cell type of the central nervous system, have been shown to play a role in the major AD pathologies, including accumulation of amyloid plaques, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress. Here, we show that inflammatory stimulation leads to metabolic activation of human astrocytes and reduces amyloid secretion. On the other hand, the activation of oxidative metabolism leads to increased reactive oxygen species production especially in AD astrocytes. While healthy astrocytes increase glutathione (GSH) release to protect the cells, Presenilin-1-mutated AD patient astrocytes do not. Thus, chronic inflammation is likely to induce oxidative damage in AD astrocytes. Activation of NRF2, the major regulator of cellular antioxidant defenses, encoded by the NFE2L2 gene, poses several beneficial effects on AD astrocytes. We report here that the activation of NRF2 pathway reduces amyloid secretion, normalizes cytokine release, and increases GSH secretion in AD astrocytes. NRF2 induction also activates the metabolism of astrocytes and increases the utilization of glycolysis. Taken together, targeting NRF2 in astrocytes could be a potent therapeutic strategy in AD.

  • Intracavity double diode structures with GaInP barrier layers for thermophotonic cooling
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Optical and Electronic Cooling of Solids II. - : SPIE. - 9781510606838 ; 10121
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical cooling of semiconductors has recently been demonstrated both for optically pumped CdS nanobelts and for electrically injected GaInAsSb LEDs at very low powers. To enable cooling at larger power and to understand and overcome the main obstacles in optical cooling of conventional semiconductor structures, we study thermophotonic (TPX) heat transport in cavity coupled light emitters. Our structures consist of a double heterojunction (DHJ) LED with a GaAs active layer and a corresponding DHJ or a p-n-homojunction photodiode, enclosed within a single semiconductor cavity to eliminate the light extraction challenges. Our presently studied double diode structures (DDS) use GaInP barriers around the GaAs active layer instead of the AlGaAs barriers used in our previous structures. We characterize our updated double diode structures by four point probe IV-measurements and measure how the material modifications affect the recombination parameters and coupling quantum efficiencies in the structures. The coupling quantum efficiency of the new devices with InGaP barrier layers is found to be approximately 10 % larger than for the structures with AlGaAs barriers at the point of maximum efficiency.

  • Interactive sonification of synchronisation of motoric behaviour in social active listening to music with mobile devices
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal on Multimodal User Interfaces. - : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 1783-7677 .- 1783-8738. ; 5:3-4, s. 157-173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper evaluates three different interactive sonifications of dyadic coordinated human rhythmic activity. An index of phase synchronisation of gestures was chosen as coordination metric. The sonifications are implemented as three prototype applications exploiting mobile devices: Sync’n’Moog, Sync’n’Move, and Sync’n’Mood. Sync’n’Moog sonifies the phase synchronisation index by acting directly on the audio signal and applying a nonlinear time-varying filtering technique. Sync’n’Move intervenes on the multi-track music content by making the single instruments emerge and hide. Sync’n’Mood manipulates the affective features of the music performance. The three sonifications were also tested against a condition without sonification.
