Holocene land-cover reconstructions for studies on land cover-climate feedbacks

- The major objectives of this paper are: (1) to review the pros and cons of the scenarios of past anthropogenic land cover change (ALCC) developed during the last ten years, (2) to discuss issues related to pollen-based reconstruction of the past land-cover and introduce a new method, REVEALS (Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites), to infer long-term records of past land-cover from pollen data, (3) to present a new project (LANDCLIM: LAND cover – CLIMate interactions in NW Europe during the Holocene) currently underway, and show preliminary results of REVEALS reconstructions of the regional land-cover in the Czech Republic for five selected time windows of the Holocene, and (4) to discuss the implications and future directions in climate and vegetation/land-cover modeling, and in the assessment of the effects of human-induced changes in land-cover on the regional climate through altered feedbacks. The existing ALCC scenarios show large discrepancies between them, and few cover time periods older than AD 800. When these scenarios are used to assess the impact of human land-use on climate, contrasting results are obtained. It emphasizes the need for methods such as the REVEALS model-based land-cover reconstructions. They might help to fine-tune descriptions of past land-cover and lead to a better understanding of how long-term changes in ALCC might have influenced climate. The REVEALS model is demonstrated to provide better estimates of the regional vegetation/landcover changes than the traditional use of pollen percentages. This will achieve a robust assessment of land cover at regional- to continental-spatial scale throughout the Holocene. We present maps of REVEALS estimates for the percentage cover of 10 plant functional types (PFTs) at 200 BP and 6000 BP, and of the two open-land PFTs “grassland” and “agricultural land” at five time-windows from 6000 BP to recent time. The LANDCLIM results are expected to provide crucial data to reassess ALCC estimates for a better understanding of the land suface-atmosphere interactions.

- A BF3×OEt2 catalyzed intramolecular Povarov reaction was used to synthesize a library of 15 chromenopyridine fused thiazolino-2-pyridone peptidomimetics. The reaction works with a range of O-alkylated salicylaldehydes and amino functionalized thiazolino-2-pyridones, to generate polyheterocycles with diverse substitution. The synthesized compounds were screened for their ability to bind α-synuclein and amyloid β fibrils in vitro. Analogs substituted with a nitro group bind to mature amyloid fibrils, and the activity moreover depends on the positioning of this functional group.

Småbiotopsuppföljning i NILS år 2008

- Denna rapport presenterar resultat för mängden av småbiotoper vid åkermark i det svenska landskapet. Analyserna görs på uppdrag av Jordbruksverket, som underlag för bl.a. utvärderingen av miljökvalitetsmålet Ett rikt odlingslandskap. Särskilda rutiner har tagits fram för att aggregera olika variabler för att välja ut de småbiotoper som uppfyller de krav som Jordbruksverket har ställt upp, ur den befintliga databasen. Urvalet av småbiotoper är anpassat för att överensstämma med det urval av objekt som ingår i det s.k. KULT-stödet (miljöersättning till lantbrukare för skötsel av värdefulla natur- och kulturmiljöer) inom Jordbruksverkets Landsbygdsprogram. Arbetet har utförts vid institutionen för skoglig resurshushållning, Sveriges lantbruks-universitet, Umeå. Resultaten baseras på data från flygbildsinventeringen inom det nationella miljöövervakningsprogrammet NILS (Nationell Inventering av Landskapet i Sverige) vilket följer tillstånd och förändringar i det svenska landskapet och hur dessa påverkar förutsättningarna för den biologiska mångfalden. NILS finansieras av Naturvårdsverket, och ingår där i programområde Landskap. Ett viktigt syfte med programmet är att följa upp de nationella miljökvalitetsmålen för olika naturtyper och fungera som underlag för att se om genomförda policybeslut och miljövårdsåtgärder leder till önskade förbättringar

- In late 2011 The Swedish Society of Radiation Physics formed a working group to concentrate on the Quality Assurance of modern radiation therapy techniques. The given task was to identify and summarise the different QA strategies in Sweden and also the international recommendations. This was used to formulate recommendations for practical guidelines within Sweden. In this paper a brief summery of the group's work is presented. All the Swedish radiation therapy centres do a pre treatment verification measurement as QA for every new IMRT and VMAT plan. Physicists do it and they believe it to be time consuming. A general standpoint from all the centres was that new guidelines and legislation is needed to allow QA that does not require a measurement. Based on various international publications and recommendations the working group has presented two strategies, one where all new plans are checked through measurement and one where no measurement is needed. The measurement-based strategy is basically the same as the one used today with an extended machine QA part. The other presented strategy is process oriented where all the different parts of the treatment chain are checked separately. The final report can be found in Swedish on http://www.radiofysik.org.

- We herein present the synthesis of diversely functionalized pyrimidine fused thiazolino-2-pyridones via K2S2O8-mediated oxidative coupling of 6-amino-7-(aminomethyl)-thiazolino-2-pyridones with aldehydes. The developed protocol is mild, has wide substrate scope, and does not require transition metal catalyst or base. Some of the synthesized compounds have an ability to inhibit the formation of Amyloid-β fibrils associated with Alzheimer's disease, while others bind to mature amyloid-β and α-synuclein fibrils.
