  • Road Friction Estimation
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This project is part of the Swedish IVSS program. The aim of IVSS is to stimulate research and development for the road safety of the future. Road conditions with low friction have been identified as a frequent cause of traffic accidents. Therefore, technology to automaticallydetect changes in road conditions and alert the driver or take proper actions with active driver support systems would be a key contribution to increased road safety. The aim of this project was to investigate the possibilities to estimate the tire to road friction.Three different approaches have been developed and evaluated, from concept to early prototypes in test vehicles. In the first method, the estimation of the coefficient of friction is based on the forces and torques that are produced at the front tires at cornering maneuvers. The second method is based on a physical model of the tire behavior and estimates road friction from information on the forces that are produced at straight driving. The third method is based on an optical sensor that classifies the road surface ahead of the vehicle. The three methods have been successfully evaluated in proving ground and public road tests in summer and winter conditions with different tires, and have been compared with reference measurements. The conclusion is that all three methods can be used for tire to road frictionestimation and are recommended for further development and industrialization.

  • Exome array analysis of ischaemic stroke : results from a southern Swedish study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Neurology. - : Wiley. - 1351-5101 .- 1468-1331. ; 23:12, s. 1722-1728
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Genome-wide association (GWA) studies have identified a few risk loci for ischaemic stroke, but these variants explain only a small part of the genetic contribution to the disease. Coding variants associated with amino acid substitutions or premature termination of protein synthesis could have a large effect on disease risk. We performed an exome array analysis for ischaemic stroke.METHODS: Patients with ischaemic stroke (n = 2385) and control subjects (n = 6077) from three Swedish studies were genotyped with the Illumina HumanOmniExpressExome BeadChip. Single-variant association analysis and gene-based tests were performed of exome variants with minor allele frequency of < 5%. A separate GWA analysis was also performed, based on 700 000 genotyped common markers and subsequent imputation.RESULTS: No exome variant or gene was significantly associated with all ischaemic stroke after Bonferroni correction (all P > 1.8 × 10(-6) for single-variant and >4.15 × 10(-6) for gene-based analysis). The strongest association in single-variant analysis was found for a missense variant in the DNAH11 gene (rs143362381; P = 5.01 × 10(-6) ). In gene-based tests, the strongest association was for the ZBTB20 gene (P = 7.9 × 10(-5) ). The GWA analysis showed that the sample was homogenous (median genomic inflation factor = 1.006). No genome-wide significant association with overall ischaemic stroke risk was found. However, previously reported associations for the PITX2 and ZFHX3 gene loci with cardioembolic stroke subtype were replicated (P = 7 × 10(-15) and 6 × 10(-3) ).CONCLUSIONS: This exome array analysis did not identify any single variants or genes reaching the pre-defined significance level for association with ischaemic stroke. Further studies on exome variants should be performed in even larger, well-defined and subtyped samples.

  • The What, Who, When, Where, and How of Idea Assessment.
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In contemporary innovation management literature there is limitedcomprehensive understanding regarding how different domains andfactors affect and bias early assessment of new product/service ideas. This paper aims at reviewing domains that previous research hasidentified affecting the evaluation of an idea and compiles them into aconceptual framework, and to test this framework among leading expertsand practitioners in the field of idea management. Empirical findings fromtwo workshops indicate that the identified domains in the framework areindeed relevant, but that additional aspect are highlighted and recognized by practitioners. We note that a proactive and deliberate approach to idea assessment needs to be carefully designed, attending to all factors in the presented framework in a comprehensive manner, while taking the organization's specific innovation needs and demands into account.

  • Clonidine as analgesia during retinopathy of prematurity screening in preterm infants (cloROP) : protocol for a randomised controlled trial
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 2044-6055. ; 12:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction Preterm infants are at risk of negative consequences from stress and pain at the same time as they often are in need of intensive care that includes painful interventions. One of the frequent painful procedures preterm infants undergo is eye examination screening to detect early signs of ROP (retinopathy of prematurity). These examinations are both stressful and painful, and despite a multitude of research studies, no conclusive pain-relieving treatment has been demonstrated. The main aim of this trial is to investigate the analgesic effect of clonidine during ROP eye examinations. Methods and analysis The planned study is a multicentre randomised controlled trial with a crossover design. Infants will be recruited from two different neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in Sweden. Infants born before gestation week 30 (and therefore eligible for ROP screening) and cared for in either of the NICUs will be eligible for inclusion in the study. The primary outcome will be Premature Infant Pain Profile–Revised score within 30 s after starting the examination. Secondary outcomes will be changes in the galvanic skin response parameters (area small peaks, area huge peaks, peaks per second and average rise time) within 30 s after starting the eye examination, together with the number and evaluation of adverse events reported within 72 hours after the examination and the examining physician’s assessment of how easy the infant was to examine.Ethics and dissemination Approval from the Swedish Ethical Review Authority and the Swedish Medical Products Agency has been obtained for the study. Parents of eligible infants will be getting both verbal and written information about the study including that participation is voluntary. Data will be collected and treated in accordance with the European general data protection regulations. The results will be reported on group level and published in a scientific journal.

  • Use and misuse of the isotache concept with respect to creep hypotheses A and B
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Geotechnique. - 0016-8505 .- 1751-7656. ; 61:10, s. 897-908
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Time-dependent settlements of thick in situ clay layers are normally analysed based on results of thin laboratory specimens. However, the time used to complete primary consolidation is significantly different for laboratory specimens and in situ soil layers. Two totally different cases, referred to as creep hypotheses A and B, have been used as a basis of discussion to assess the effect of creep during the primary consolidation phase. Several laboratory and field experiments have been conducted to study the effect of soil layer thickness on the time-dependent compressibility of a soil layer. Some of these tests seemed to support hypothesis A, others hypothesis B, and in some cases showed a behaviour between the two. As a result this question has continued to be a controversial topic among researchers, and remains to be an issue that needs to be resolved. In this study, some relevant experimental investigations from the literature are thoroughly studied and critically reviewed, and also explained consistently using the isotache concept. This work indicates that the isotache approach can capture the main characteristics of the time-dependent compressibility of clays during both the primary and secondary consolidation phases. It is also shown that the misuse of the isotache concept, as reported in the literature, may give a confusing picture of reality. Based on the considered data, it is demonstrated that the measured time-dependent compressibility of clays agrees well with hypothesis B.

  • Study protocol : parents as pain management in Swedish neonatal care - SWEpap, a multi-center randomized controlled trial.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: BMC Pediatrics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2431. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: During the first period of life, critically ill as well as healthy newborn infants experience recurrent painful procedures. Parents are a valuable but often overlooked resource in procedural pain management in newborns. Interventions to improve parents' knowledge and involvement in infants' pain management are essential to implement in the care of the newborn infant. Neonatal pain research has studied a range of non-pharmacological pain alleviating strategies during painful procedures, yet, regarding combined multisensorial parent-driven non-pharmacological pain management, research is still lacking.METHODS/DESIGN: A multi-center randomized controlled trial (RCT) with three parallel groups with the allocation ratio 1:1:1 is planned. The RCT "Parents as pain management in Swedish neonatal care - SWEpap", will investigate the efficacy of combined pain management with skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding and live parental lullaby singing compared with standard pain care initiated by health care professionals, during routine metabolic screening of newborn infants (PKU-test).DISCUSSION: Parental involvement in neonatal pain management enables a range of comforting parental interventions such as skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding, rocking and soothing vocalizations. To date, few studies have been published examining the efficacy of combined multisensorial parent-driven interventions. So far, research shows that the use of combined parent-driven pain management such as skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding, is more effective in reducing behavioral responses to pain in infants, than using the pain-relieving interventions alone. Combined parental soothing behaviors that provide rhythmic (holding/rocking/vocalizing) or orogustatory/orotactile (feeding/pacifying) stimulation that keep the parent close to the infant, are more effective in a painful context. In the SWEpap study we also include parental live lullaby singing, which is an unexplored but promising biopsychosocial, multimodal and multisensory pain alleviating adjuvant, especially in combination with skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov ( NCT04341194 ) 10 April 2020.

  • Calculating long-term settlement in soft clays - with special focus on the Gothenburg region
  • 2010
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Long-term settlement in clay constitutes an engineering challenge in road design and construction in areas with deep deposits of soft clay. Soil improvement and construction of building foundations or embankments can be quite complicated and expensive in such areas. Construction costs need to be balanced against high maintenance costs. In order to do this optimally, there is a need to predict long-term settlement with a high degree of accuracy. Two different test sites were chosen for back-calculation, a test embankment at Nödinge and a groundwater lowering at Kaserntorget. There was also one hypothetical test site.In this thesis a short description is presented of the fundamental behaviour of soft clays with regard to compressibility as well as a short explanation of the theory for the three different models that has been used within this thesis – Embankco, GS Settlement and the Soft Soil Creep model. Soil parameter determination for long-term settlement analysis is discussed together with some of the inherent complications. For the IL oedometer test the study shows that if the time for the load stage of interest is not sufficiently long the evaluated creep parameter could be misleading. Back-calculation of CRS oedometer tests, using the Soft Soil Creep model, is performed for this model and a procedure is suggested. The outcome of the analysis shows that all three models produce similar results for the hypothetical case. For the two test sites in question, both GS Settlement and the Soft Soil Creep model were capable of predicting the measured settlement with acceptable accuracy. The Embankco program was only used for the hypothetical case. Keywords: Soft clay, creep, test sites, long-term settlement.
