    • Damage assessments in the aerospace industry are for composites more demanding than they were before for traditional materials. The simulation of impact damage and damage growth has become increasingly important where testing of manufactured parts could be highly expensive, and reliable models are therefore essential for those materials that shall be used in this industry. Following the vested interest in Spread Tow reinforcements and its ultra-thin plies due to outstanding performance (among them the market leading TeXtreme®), the European Air TN project DAMTEX has aimed to develop analytical and FE models to predict the impact damage and damage propagation in thin woven composites. Extensive testing has been performed to feed and validate the material models through the characterization of fiber failure, delamination and residual strengths after an impact event in a drop tower test. As a result of the better understanding of these novel materials, a new Spread Tow reinforcement with improved damage performance has been developed. The interlaminar toughness, limited damage and excellent CAI results observed in this new material have outperformed those in currently used carbon fiber reinforcements. TeXtreme® will present the results from the DAMTEX project with regard to the acquired knowledge and developed technologies and materials.

    • The optimal use of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) when strengthening timber beams loaded in bending involves considering placing the reinforcement on both the tension and the compression side, in order to utilise the ductile compression failure of the wood to the full. In this respect, a knowledge and understanding of the compression failure mechanism of the timber/CFRP system becomes a point of paramount importance. However, no testing method specific to the compression loading of small wood specimens reinforced with CFRP is currently available. This investigation focuses on the experimental developments of the geometry and test set-up necessary in order to determine the compression failure mechanism of small wood block specimens reinforced With CFRP loaded in compression parallel to the grain. The method is based on an existing testing method for unreinforced wood specimens. The Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method is used to monitor deformation during experim!

    • Two approaches to modelling the effects of embedded defects and impact damage in composite aerostructures are presented. These differ in the manner n which the damage is represented; one as an equivalent delamination and the other as a soft inclusion with non-linear homogenized material properties. These techniques are applied to study the effects of defects and impact damage on the performance of composite panels.

    • Arkitektur och tekniks årliga studieresa till Schweiz är på många sätt unik. Vi transporterar oss själva genom det vackra alplandskapet och besöker några av landets vackraste broar och byggnader. De vilda bergsmassiven och den förfinade byggnadskulturen väver sig in i varandra under hela vår magiska arkitektursafari. Resan i augusti 2021 blev nästan ett år försenad på grund av pandemin. I stället för en förberedelse av studierna i årskurs 3 blev det en festlig avslutning på kandidattiden på Chalmers. Vid sidan om våra gängse besöksmål, från Robert Maillarts och Jürg Conzetts konstruktioner till Le Corbusier och Peter Zumthors arkitektur, hade vi den här resan ett särskilt fokus på materialen lera, kalk, sten och cement, och på restaurering av broar och byggnader i dessa material.

    • Damage initiation and evolution in NCF composites leading to final failure includes a multitude of mechanisms and phenomena on several length scales. From an engineering point-of-view a computational scheme where all mechanisms would be explicitly addressed is too complex and time consuming. Hence, methods for macroscopic performance prediction of NCF composites, with limited input regarding micro- And mesoscale details, are requested. In this paper, multi-scale modelling approaches for in-plane transverse strength of NCF composites are outlined and discussed. In addition a simplistic method to predict transverse tensile and compressive strength for textile composites featuring low or no fibre waviness is presented.

  • Social and moral psychology of COVID-19 across 69 countries

    • The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

  • Biaxial transverse compression testing for a fibre reinforced polymer material

    • Unidirectional laminates have been tested under uniaxial transverse compression and under biaxial transverse compression. Failure occurred by shear in an inclined failure plane parallel to the fibres. The transverse shear response of the material on the failure plane was evaluated from the tests. In the biaxial tests, the failure load was considerably higher than in the uniaxial tests. For a given transverse shear strain the transverse shear stress was also higher in the case of biaxial compression. It is also shown that using waisted specimens instead of prismatic specimens does not seem to bring noticeable benefits for through-thickness uniaxial compression tests. The experimental results presented here are important input to the development and the validation of damage models of fibre reinforced polymer materials accounting for the matrix nonlinear response in shear and compression.
