    • This study introduces an innovative multidisciplinary design approach for highly conductive and lightweight pin-fin-based heatsinks leveraging the advantages of graphene technology. The primary objective is to optimize the thermal management of silicon carbide (SiC) based inverters within electric vehicles (EVs). To closely emulate the real SiC power module, comprehensive analyses, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), are performed on the module. A detailed fluid dynamics model utilizing a 3D-conjugate heat transfer (CHT) methodology is employed to evaluate the thermal behavior of SiC power switches in contact with the coolant. The multidisciplinary analysis is initially implemented on an aluminum-based heatsink, validated experimentally, and subsequently compared to graphene. The integration of graphene in the heatsink design demonstrates notable improvements, including a 24.4 % increase in the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and a 19.6 % reduction in thermal resistance (sink to fluid) at a 6 l/min fluid flow rate compared to its aluminum counterpart. Consequently, the SiC chips within the graphene-based heatsink exhibit an 11.5 % lower temperature rise compared to the aluminum version. The improvements in the cooling solution for SiC inverters in EVs, achieved through the adoption of graphene instead of traditional metals, serve as a proof of concept. This signifies a step forward in prioritizing the crucial balance between performance and power density.

  • A Comparison Between the Combustion of Natural Gas and Partially Reformed Natural Gas in an Atmospheric Lean Premixed Turbine-Type Combustor

    • A small-scale combustor was set up to analyze the combustion of natural gas and two mixtures of partially reformed natural gas. The partially reformed mixtures can be formed using biomass to feed the endothermic reforming reactions. Before combusting these mixtures in a gas turbine, experimental work was done on a primary zone combustion chamber to examine the combustor behavior when switching from natural gas to the wet and dry hydrogen-rich mixtures. Temperature profiles, flame location and ignition limits have been investigated for a variety of stoichiometries and several air temperatures. Possible problems concerning blow-off, flashback, increased pollutant products and excessive liner wall temperatures were analyzed. It was concluded that the switch in operation from natural gas to these wet and/or dry partially reformed natural gas mixtures lowers the blow-off limits while maintaining similar liner wall temperature profiles. Furthermore, no significant changes in pollutant production were observed. Flame area, shape and position display considerable differences in combustion regime for the three tested fuel types.

    • A Low Weber water spray subjected to an air cross flow has been investigated. The spray is characterized by low liquid injection velocity, producing a column that is broken up by aerodynamic forces from the oncoming air. PIV and PDA have been used to quantify both the continuous and dispersed phases. Long range microscopy has been used to characterize the column breakup process. It has been shown that bubbles (akin to droplet bag breakup) may form already in the column.

    • Modelling of electrical machines is constantly refined and it is now possible to couple numerical thermal models and electromagnetic models, thereby considering the thermal effects on motor materials. In this paper it is shown how a 3-D model of an interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor, including losses in the end windings and the effect of air and liquid cooling can be made where simulation results are compared with measurements. Further, it is shown how the coolant inlet temperature and volumetric flow rate affects the heat transfer coefficient of the cooling duct for some load points within the torquespeed range of the motor.

    • This paper presents the design of a high-performance liquid-cooled heatsink for three-phase automotive inverters that attains uniform thermal distribution at the surface of the three power modules. Power modules with SiC-MOSFETs are used in this study and a uniform thermal distribution on the heatsink guarantees equal thermal loading of the semiconductor devices. A comparative study of various cooling plate geometries is made and their effectiveness in meeting the design objectives of low sink-temperature and coolant pressure drop and the highest possible temperature uniformity along the surface of the plate is presented. Plates with straight and wavy fins are compared with designs accommodating rectangular pins and the advantages of each case is shown with the corresponding simulation results. Key design parameters of the cooling plate geometries are optimized with an iterative process, which is presented with selective simulation results of 3D Conjugate Heat Transfer computations for coolant flow rates up to 10~l/min. The final heatsink design accommodates multiple rectangular pins and attains temperature difference of less than 2oC among the three SiC power modules.

    • This paper proposes a new design tool that can be used for the development of a proper cooling component for high-power three-phase SiC module-packs for electric vehicles. Specifically, a multidisciplinary approach of the design process is presented that is based on the accurate electrical, thermal and fluid-mechanics modeling as well as computational testing of a high-power three-phase SiC modulepack under transient-load conditions, so that it can effectively meet the highly-demanding cooling requirements of an electric vehicle inverter. The cooling plate is initially designed by using steady-state based 3D-computational-fluid-dynamic (CFD) tool, as in a conventional method. Then, the proposed design algorithm fine-tunes it through transient 3D-CFD computations by following a specific iterative improvement procedure considering the heat dissipation requirements for the SiC power switches during the official driving cycles for passenger vehicles and during abrupt acceleration tests under several ambient environments. Therefore, not only overheating at all operating conditions is avoided, but also, accurate thermal modeling of the individual inverter modules is provided that can be used for lifetime estimations and for calculating the overload capability of the inverter. The design improvement attained with the proposed procedure against the conventional steady-state approach is validated on a traction 450 A SiC inverter with the model of a real passenger vehicle.

    • The present disclosure relates to a cable system for cable condition monitoring, a use of such a cable system, a method for manufacturing such a cable system, a method for operating such a cable system and a computer program element for operating such a cable system.The cable system comprises a first adapter unit, a first sleeve unit and a cable comprising at least a first end portion. The first adapter unit is connectable to an energy storage system and the cable is configured for transferring electric power to the first adapter unit. The first sleeve unit is arranged between the first adapter unit and the first end portion of the cable and configured for providing protection therebetween. The first sleeve unit comprises a first sensor unit configured for generating data based on strain exerted on the first sleeve unit. The first sensor unit comprises a first flexible electronic element extending at least partially to the first end portion of the cable.

    • Efficient electric machinery often needs to be accurately thermally conditioned. Heat sinks and heating surfaces frequently used to allow for precise temperature control of the critical equipment. To tackle the thermal challenges in the art, different design methodologies, such as the parametric or the topology optimization are introduced. Compared to parametric optimization, topology optimization allows for more tailored cooling solutions on elaborate geometries related to propulsion. Being based on gradient descent algorithm from the machine learning toolbox, topology optimization may suffer from local minima. In this report, the setup is designed to alleviate the risk for local minima and instead aim for a more global optimization. Accordingly, an artificial intelligence pipeline is scripted to run several gradient-descent based topology optimization assessments under a genetic algorithm optimization loop. The resulting geometry is shown to substantially improve the cooling ability in the given packaging volume in a light duty battery electric vehicle with quantified reduction in CO2 emissions.

    • An arrangement adapted for removing soot from an exhaust gas sensor in an exhaust gas system of a vehicle comprising a combustion engine, where the arrangement comprises a fluid outlet arranged in an exhaust gas conduit, and where the fluid outlet is adapted to impinge a blast of fluid on the exhaust gas sensor. The advantage of the invention is that an exhaust gas sensor can easily be cleaned in order to ensure a correct reading from the sensor.
