- Det råder på sina håll en oro och ett mörker i debatten och föreställningarna om samhällets tillstånd. Bilder målas av en värld av kollapsande system och spruckna fasader, där de folkvalda fattar beslut som utarmar människors trygghet och livsvillkor. Det talas om det förljugna etablissemanget, om politisk korrekthet som ödelägger och förstör. Andra ser hur antidemokratiska krafter, likt början av förra seklet, växer sig större och tar allt mer plats på gator och torg. Somliga beskriver en demokrati i kris, om obönhörligt växande sprickbildningar i samhällsbygget. Och i spåren av dessa skeenden berättas hur otrygghetens och rädslans landskap breder ut sig. Världen som vi en gång kände den tycks långsamt glida ur våra händer. Den välputsade fasaden spricker. Samtidigt finns indikationer på att beskrivningen av samhällets förestående krackelering har chimäriska drag, en illusion framvuxen i en tid då det som tidigare varit etablerade normer och ideal på olika sätt utmanas och ifrågasätts. Kanhända är det så att samhällets palett skiftar i långt fler nyanser än mörkaste grått? Kanhända spirar det mitt ibland oss en värld fylld av möjligheter och förutsättningar för människor att leva, bo och utvecklas – tillsammans och sida vid sida? För i konstrast till bilden av samhällets rämnande grundvalar, kan skymtas skriftningar i den gemensamma värdegrunden i riktning mot ökad tolerans, öppenhet och jämlikhet. Kanske är dessa skiftningar tecken på att det förekommer en hel del sprickor också i föreställningen om den spruckna fasaden? Sprickor i fasaden är den sjuttioandra forskarantologin från SOM-institutet vid Göteborgs universitet. Titeln refererar till den sprickbildning i samhällsbygget som på olika håll har lyfts fram i den allmänna debatten. En del av de frågor som analyseras i boken påvisar också tydliga sprickor och polariseringstendenser – inte sällan i frågor som sträcker sig bortom den klassiska vänsterhögerdimensionen. Det är inte längre bara frågor som rör skatter, välfärdsstatens finansiering eller förhållandet mellan offentligt och privat som står för den största sprickbildningen. I många fall handlar det också om sociala och kulturella frågor som skapar skiljelinjer i befolkningen.

Convince with facts: Information effects on attitudes to the sickness insurance in Sweden

- Does factual information matter for policy evaluations and attitudes? Previous research has provided different, and partly contradictive, replies to this question. To test the effect of concrete facts on attitudes, we provide findings from a survey web-experiment concerning satisfaction with the universal sickness insurance. The treatments in the experiment are short facts from official reports on how the insurance actually work and is used. Our dependent variables are general satisfaction with how the insurance works, as well as trust for the responsible agency administering the insurance and more specified perceptions on capacity, precision, and fairness of the insurance. The results show that under certain circumstances, policy-specific information does have an effect – even though the effects are not consistent. Effects of the information were mainly found on general evaluations of the sickness insurance rather than on specific attitudes. Furthermore, we conclude that, contrary to expectations, the effects were not conditional on left–right position, subjective knowledge, political interest, or proximity.

Democratic responsiveness implies that politicians are expected to be responsive to public demands and needs but also that the public is expected to respond to actual policies and reforms by adjusting their demands. What is often over-looked is that policy-specific knowledge is imperative for public policy responsiveness to send correct signals. By using survey experiments, we tested the effects of policy-specific information on policy preferences for privatization of welfare services in Sweden. In line with the thermostatic model, we expected information on the increase of privatization to show negative correlations with demand for more privatization. The experiments showed that policy preferences changed in most policy areas when policy-specific facts were provided. The negative effects of information about privatization were most pronounced among centre-left respondents, increasing the left-right polarization. The results suggest that policy-specific knowledge can serve as a useful mechanism in order to meet the identified theoretical need to strengthen the causal relationship in theories of public responsiveness. The study adds important knowledge to how we understand public responsiveness, and highlight the need of “reality checks” when analysing policy demands.

Class and ideological orientations revisited: an exploration of class-based mechanisms

- Studies of the relationship between class position and political outlooks still only have a limited understanding of the class-related mechanisms that matter for ideological orientations. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the mechanisms that link class position and left/right and authoritarian/libertarian orientations. Besides main factors such as income, career prospects, job security, education, class origin and class identification, the significance of work-related factors such as work autonomy, working in a team, a physically demanding job and a mentally demanding job is studied. The findings are based on a survey specifically designed for this purpose and collected in Sweden in 2008/2009. A great deal of the association between class position and left/right orientations is explained by socio-economic conditions; different classes sympathize with policies that will benefit them economically. Another important factor is class identification. Work-related factors also have relevance, but the effect of class position on left/right orientations works mainly through the remuneration system. Class position is also related to authoritarian/libertarian orientations. However, this relationship is less explained by socio-economic position per se, but is rather an effect of the educational system and its allocation of the workforce into different class positions. It also turns out that work-related factors do not explain the class effects; however, a physically demanding job shows a unique effect. Overall, our findings suggest that besides factors such as class position, income, education and class identification, we need to consider work-related aspects to derive a more complete understanding of the distribution of ideological orientations in Western societies.
