  • Health effects following the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption : a cohort study

    • OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to determine whether exposure to a volcanic eruption was associated with increased prevalence of physical and/or mental symptoms.DESIGN: Cohort, with non-exposed control group.SETTING: Natural disasters like volcanic eruptions constitute a major public-health threat. The Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull exposed residents in southern Iceland to continuous ash fall for more than 5 weeks in spring 2010. This study was conducted during November 2010-March 2011, 6-9 months after the Eyjafjallajökull eruption.PARTICIPANTS: Adult (18-80 years of age) eruption-exposed South Icelanders (N=1148) and a control population of residents of Skagafjörður, North Iceland (N=510). The participation rate was 72%.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Physical symptoms in the previous year (chronic), in the previous month (recent), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) measured psychological morbidity.RESULTS: The likelihood of having symptoms during the last month was higher in the exposed population, such as; tightness in the chest (OR 2.5; 95% CI 1.1 to 5.8), cough (OR 2.6; 95% CI 1.7 to 3.9), phlegm (OR 2.1; 95% CI 1.3 to 3.2), eye irritation (OR 2.9; 95% CI 2.0 to 4.1) and psychological morbidity symptoms (OR 1.3; 95% CI 1.0 to 1.7). Respiratory symptoms during the last 12 months were also more common in the exposed population; cough (OR 2.2; 95% CI 1.6 to 2.9), dyspnoea (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.1 to 2.3), although the prevalence of underlying asthma and heart disease was similar. Twice as many in the exposed population had two or more symptoms from nose, eyes or upper-respiratory tract (24% vs 13%, p<0.001); these individuals were also more likely to experience psychological morbidity (OR 4.7; 95% CI 3.4 to 6.5) compared with individuals with no symptoms. Most symptoms exhibited a dose-response pattern within the exposed population, corresponding to low, medium and high exposure to the eruption.CONCLUSIONS: 6-9 months after the Eyjafjallajökull eruption, residents living in the exposed area, particularly those closest to the volcano, had markedly increased prevalence of various physical symptoms. A portion of the exposed population reported multiple symptoms and may be at risk for long-term physical and psychological morbidity. Studies of long-term consequences are therefore warranted.

  • ‘Raising the temperature’ : the arts on a warming planet

    • The search for decisive actions to remain below 1.5 °C of global temperature rise will require profound cultural transformations. Yet our knowledge of how to promote and bring about such deep transformative changes in the minds and behaviours of individuals and societies is still limited. As climate change unravels and the planet becomes increasingly connected, societies will need to articulate a shared purpose that is both engaging and respectful of cultural diversity. Thus, there is a growing need to ‘raise the temperature’ of integration between multiple ways of knowing climate change. We have reviewed a range of literatures and synthesized them in order to draw out the perceived role of the arts in fostering climate transformations. Our analysis of climate-related art projects and initiatives shows increased engagement in recent years, particularly with the narrative, visual and performing arts. The arts are moving beyond raising awareness and entering the terrain of interdisciplinarity and knowledge co-creation. We conclude that climate-arts can contribute positively in fostering the imagination and emotional predisposition for the development and implementation of the transformations necessary to address the 1.5 °C challenge.

  • gamma-Cyclodextrin Nanoparticle Eye Drops with Dorzolamide : Effect on Intraocular Pressure in Man

    • Purpose: To test a new drug delivery platform with dorzolamide γ-cyclodextrin (γCD) nanoparticle eye drops for intraocular pressure (IOP) control and safety and compare with Trusopt.® Methods: Self-aggregating γCD nanoparticle eye drops containing 3% dorzolamide were given once a day (QD) and compared with Trusopt given three times a day (TID) in a prospective randomized single masked crossover trial over 24 h. Seventeen subjects with IOP over 18 mmHg were recruited. IOP was measured with an Icare Tonometer Pro.® Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the IOP lowering effect of dorzolamide nanoparticle eye drops QD and Trusopt TID. At peak (4 h), the IOP reduction from baseline was 3.8±2.6 mmHg (18%, P<0.05) in the nanoparticle eye drop group and 3.1±3.7 mmHg in the Trusopt group (14%, P<0.05, P=0.97 between groups). At trough (24 h), the IOP reduction was 1.4±2.8 mmHg (6%, P>0.05) in nanoparticle eye drop group and 1.5±2.0 mmHg (7%, P>0.05) in the Trusopt group (P=0.23 between groups). Burning sensation measured on the visual analogue scale (1–100) was less from the nanoparticle eye drops (12±15) than from the Trusopt (37±30), (P=0.0038). Visual acuity and conjunctival hyperemia did not differ between the two groups. Conclusions: Dorzolamide cyclodextrin nanoparticle eye drops QD lower IOP and the effect seems comparable to Trusopt given TID. The nanoparticle eye drops are well tolerated and seem to have a better safety profile than Trusopt.
