    • Specific features of the process in which oxide nanopowders are formed in a hydrothermal treatment of coprecipitated magnesium and iron oxides were studied. It was shown that the rate at which oxide nanoparticles are formed increases when reagents structurally close to the final product are used. It was found that, with the hydrothermal treatment of coprecipitated magnesium and iron hydroxides at 450°C combined with the subsequent thermal treatment in air at temperatures of 400–600°C, it is possible to obtain a homogeneous mixture of nanocrystalline powders based on an iron-containing spinel phase and magnesium oxide.

    • A new dinitrosyl iron complex of binuclear structure [Fe-2(mu-S-2-methylthiophene)(2)(NO)(4)] was first synthesized and structurally characterized by XRD and theoretical methods. Using caspase-3 as an example it was shown that [Fe-2(mu-S-2-methylthiophene)(2)(NO)(4)] and its analog [Fe-2(mu-S-2-methylfurane)(2)(NO)(4)] can inhibit the action of active site cysteine proteins; the difference in inhibitory activity was explained by molecular docking studies. Biochemical and in silico studies give grounds that the biological activity of dinitrosyl iron complexes is a mu-SR bridging ligand structure function. Thus the rational design strategy of [Fe-2(mu-SR)(2)(NO)(4)] complexes can be applied to make NO prodrugs with high affinity to therapeutically significant targets involved in cancer and inflammation.

  • Search for the Radial Magnetic-Field Gradient in the CP Star alpha(2) CVn

    • The possibility of investigating the vertical structure of the magnetic field in chemically peculiar main-sequence stars is discussed. The nonuniform distribution of chemical elements over the surface complicates the problem substantially. The most efficient measurements are shown to be those of the longitudinal field components based on spectral lines with wavelengths longer and shorter than 3646 angstrom (shortward and longward of the Balmer jump), which form at different optical depths in the atmosphere. Various methodological problems are addressed that must be overcome in order to accomplish the task. The brightest magnetic star alpha(2) CVn is observed with the echelle spectrometer equipped with an Uppsala CCD chip. New observations corroborate our previous result: the longitudinal component of the magnetic field B-e of the alpha(2) CVn star increases with depth by about 30% over the atmosphere thickness scale.
