  • Solar Energetic Particle Event occurrence prediction using Solar Flare Soft X-ray measurements and Machine Learning
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Space Weather and Space Climate. - : EDP Sciences. - 2115-7251. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The prediction of the occurrence of Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events has been investigated over many years, and multiple works have presented significant advances in this problem. The accurate and timely prediction of SEPs is of interest to the scientific community as well as mission designers, operators, and industrial partners due to the threat SEPs pose to satellites, spacecrafts, and crewed missions. In this work, we present a methodology for the prediction of SEPs from the soft X-rays of solar flares associated with SEPs that were measured in 1 AU. We use an expansive dataset covering 25 years of solar activity, 1988-2013, which includes thousands of flares and more than two hundred identified and catalogued SEPs. Neural networks are employed as the predictors in the model, providing probabilities for the occurrence or not of a SEP, which are converted to yes/no predictions. The neural networks are designed using current and state-of-the-art tools integrating recent advances in the machine learning field. The results of the methodology are extensively evaluated and validated using all the available data, and it is shown that we achieve very good levels of accuracy with correct SEP occurrence prediction higher than 85% and correct no-SEP predictions higher than 92%. Finally, we discuss further work towards potential improvements and the applicability of our model in real-life conditions.

  • A Design Case: Interactive Sports Content Broadcasting
  • 2004
  • Rapport (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Digital television is a new and interesting platform for developing multimedia services. The MELISA platform aims at cross-media broadcasting over digital television and 3G mobile networks. The platform provides presentation of interactive video content, advertisement and gaming. The devices targeted by these services are Set-Top Boxes and Portable Digital Assistants. A new service, in combination with technology that does not yet allow for very rich interaction, requires careful and inventive design of the user interfaces. The key to gaining consumer acceptance of interactive TV is ease of use. In this paper we present the system architecture briefly and discuss issues related to user interface design, considering both the type of media content and hardware platforms. We reflect on the design process used and its suitability as we as designers have experienced it.

  • Exploring exercise behavior and well-being of Swedish university students - A self-determination perspective
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Idrottsforum. - Malmö : Malmö universitet, Institutionen för idrottsvetenskap. - 1652-7224. ; 2013–04–16, s. 1-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between motivational profile, self-efficacy, basic needs satisfaction, exercise behavior, and well-being among Swedish university students. A set of the instruments including GLTEQ, SHIS, BPNES, BREQ-2 and BARSE was distributed at a university in southern Sweden. The respondents (n=260) included men (n=122) and women (n=138). For analysis and processing of the gathered data SPSS was used with Pearson’s r and Multiple Regression Analysis. The results showed that competence, autonomy and relatedness were positive predictors of self-determined motivation, whilst identified regulation, intrinsic regulation and barrier self-efficacy were positive predictors for strenuous exercise. Moreover, a regression analysis showed that only competence was a significant predictor for well-being; however, positive correlations were shown between all the basic needs and well-being. Satisfaction of the basic needs seem to result in more self-determined motivation and higher levels of barrier self-efficacy, which in turn increases the number of strenuous exercise sessions per week. Furthermore, satisfaction of the basic needs, especially competence through exercise, appears to be important for university students’ well-being. Strenuous exercise itself may also have the potential to positively influence well-being.

  • User Interface Design for Multi-platform Interactive Sports Content Broadcasting
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Advanced visual interfaces conference 2004. - : Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University. - 1581138679
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The new generation of television viewers is currently being confronted and becoming acquainted with a series of technological developments in the realm of consumer electronics and gaming that raise their expectations for similar advances in TV broadcasts. The MELISA platform aims at the cross-media broadcasting of sports events featuring interactive advertising and sports-related games over digital television and next generation mobile network infrastructures. The platform provides services for optimal presentation of complex interactive real time video content, for advertisement and an advanced real-time gaming (betting) engine in at least two different client platforms. User interface design is a major issue in a complex end-to-end solution having to cater the needs of users ranging from broadcasting professionals to end-users. Especially in the case of interactive gaming there are numerous challenges in the user interface design, in order to deliver to all categories of devices (and end users) equal quantity and quality of information. In this paper we present the overall system architecture and philosophy and then focus on user interface design issues both for the routine work of broadcasting professionals as well as the end users, owners of different types of consumer devices (such as PDAs and interactive TV Set Top Boxes).

  • ISSP Position Stand : Social missions through sport and exercise psychology
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. - New York, NY : Taylor & Francis. - 1612-197X .- 1557-251X. ; 14:1, s. 4-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sport psychology is expanding in how it might be utilised to benefit human activity and social life. Performance enhancement remains central to the field; however, there is growing interest in how sport psychology practices and sport contexts can be crafted to enable social missions. The classification of social missions through the context of sports might vary from one sport development agency or scholar to the next, and could relate to health and well-being, sport for peace, social development, disease prevention, and positive youth development. This position stand has been conceived to situate the International Society of Sport Psychology within sport for development for the betterment of people in communities, countries, and regions. This ISSP Position Stand is structured into a historical overview of sports as social missions, sport for cultural exchange and social justice, sport for health and well-being, sport for positive youth development, sport for peace, and postulations and recommendations. © 2015 International Society of Sport Psychology

  • On the relativistic nature of predicted and real physical experiences : A field experiment
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Psychology of Sport And Exercise. - : Elsevier. - 1469-0292 .- 1878-5476. ; 16, s. 106-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives:An important yet unresolved question stemming from judgment and decision-makingliterature is whether individuals evaluate physical experiences in relative or absolute terms.Design and method:The study examined 181 experienced basketball players in a 2 (type of experience:predicted versus real) x 2 (evaluation mode: separate versus joint) x 2 (type of activity: running versusshooting) experimental research design. Results:We demonstrated that individuals who were familiar with physical tasks evaluated predictedand real physical experiences in absolute terms. In addition, we showed that relativistic modes ofevaluation applied to real physical experiences but not predicted physical experiences. Conclusions:This research contributes to the debate concerning whether prior task experience in-fluences formation of relative evaluations, and reveals that contexts that urge for relative evaluationsundermine happiness with physical tasks.
