  • Materializing activism
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ECSCW 2019 - Proceedings of the 17th European Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work. - : European Society for Socially Embedded Technologies (EUSSET).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Net activism shows how easily available tools allow the organization of social movements to be scaled up and extended globally. These media ecologies enable new forms of power. This one-day workshop gathers researchers focusing on the collaborative efforts within social movements, looking into the socio-technical systems; the organization of activism; the relations between traditional and social media; and the complex network of systems, information, people, values, theories, histories, ideologies and aesthetics underlying various types of activism. The workshop consists of brainstorming sessions where we materialize the intangible and develop our theories and ideas further through a collaborative design process.

  • Tools, language technology and communication in computer assisted language learning
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Writing and Digital Media. - : Brill Academic Publishers. - 9781849508209 ; , s. 189-198
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this chapter, we discuss the use of Language Technology (LT) (e.g. spelling and grammar checkers) in tools for Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Attempts in merging research from LT and CALL were popular during the 1960s, but has since stagnated. We argue that this state of affairs is unfortunate, and that it has several causes: technology not living up to expectations, a single-minded focus on either communication or on linguistic forms in language teaching and framing computer systems for learning as "tutors" instead of "tools." Following brief introductions to Computer Aided Language Learning and LT, we provide a framework for designing "tool"-based systems, and argue that these tools should be used in a communicative setting while simultaneously training linguistic forms.

  • Appropriating the use of a Moo for collaborative learning
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Interacting with computers. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0953-5438 .- 1873-7951. ; 15:6, s. 759-781
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study presents an analysis of the activities of professional teachers while they use a text-based computer-mediated communication system called a Moo. The teachers, who are geographically distributed, attend a professional training course in education and information technology. The focus is on the appropriation process with regard to using the artifact within their learning and teaching activity. In order to analyze this process, participants' text-based communication was logged and the data was treated both quantitatively and qualitatively. We found that interaction through the artifact brings a modification in the organization of the classroom discourse and in particular in the teachers' communication schemes. We observed that the teachers-as-students attending the online training used the artifact mainly for the establishment and maintenance of relationships. They appropriated the features of the artifact that allowed them to 'talk' and exchange personal experiences rather easily. They did not however, elaborate online information shared with the others. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
