  • Sub-30 nm 2D Perovskites Patterns via Block Copolymer Guided Self-Assembly for Color Conversion Optical Polarizer
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Small. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1613-6810 .- 1613-6829.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the remarkable advances made in the development of 2D perovskites suitable for various high-performance devices, the development of sub-30 nm nanopatterns of 2D perovskites with anisotropic photoelectronic properties remains challenging. Herein, a simple but robust route for fabricating sub-30 nm 1D nanopatterns of 2D perovskites over a large area is presented. This method is based on nanoimprinting a thin precursor film of a 2D perovskite with a topographically pre-patterned hard poly(dimethylsiloxane) mold replicated from a block copolymer nanopattern consisting of guided self-assembled monolayered in-plane cylinders. 1D nanopatterns of various 2D perovskites (A & PRIME;(2)MA(n)(-1)Pb(n)X(3)(n)(+1),A & PRIME; = BA, PEA, X = Br, I) are developed; their enhanced photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields are approximately four times greater than those of the corresponding control flat films. Anisotropic photocurrent is observed because 2D perovskite nanocrystals are embedded in a topological 1D nanopattern. Furthermore, this 1D metal-coated nanopattern of a 2D perovskite is employed as a color conversion optical polarizer, in which polarized PL is developed. This is due to its capability of polarization of an incident light arising from the sub-30 nm line pattern, as well as the PL of the confined 2D perovskite nanocrystals in the pattern.

  • Atmospheric new particle formation characteristics in the Arctic as measured at Mount Zeppelin, Svalbard, from 2016 to 2018
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Chemistry And Physics. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1680-7316 .- 1680-7324. ; 20:21, s. 13425-13441
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We conducted continuous measurements of nanoparticles down to 3 nm size in the Arctic at Mount Zeppelin, Ny Ålesund, Svalbard, from October 2016 to December 2018, providing a size distribution of nanoparticles (3–60 nm). A significant number of nanoparticles as small as 3 nm were often observed during new particle formation (NPF), particularly in summer, suggesting that these were likely produced near the site rather than being transported from other regions after growth. The average NPF frequency per year was 23 %, having the highest percentage in August (63 %). The average formation rate (J) and growth rate (GR) for 3–7 nm particles were 0.04 cm−3 s−1 and 2.07 nm h−1, respectively. Although NPF frequency in the Arctic was comparable to that in continental areas, the J and GR were much lower. The number of nanoparticles increased more frequently when air mass originated over the south and southwest ocean regions; this pattern overlapped with regions having strong chlorophyll a concentration and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) production capacity (southwest ocean) and was also associated with increased NH3 and H2SO4 concentration, suggesting that marine biogenic sources were responsible for gaseous precursors to NPF. Our results show that previously developed NPF occurrence criteria (low loss rate and high cluster growth rate favor NPF) are also applicable to NPF in the Arctic.

  • Dimethyl Sulfide-Induced Increase in Cloud Condensation Nuclei in the Arctic Atmosphere
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Global Biogeochemical Cycles. - 0886-6236 .- 1944-9224. ; 35:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oceanic dimethyl sulfide (DMS) emissions have been recognized as a biological regulator of climate by contributing to cloud formation. Despite decades of research, the climatic role of DMS remains ambiguous largely because of limited observational evidence for DMS-induced cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) enhancement. Here, we report concurrent measurement of DMS, physiochemical properties of aerosol particles, and CCN in the Arctic atmosphere during the phytoplankton bloom period of 2010. We encountered multiple episodes of new particle formation (NPF) and particle growth when DMS mixing ratios were both low and high. The growth of particles to sizes at which they can act as CCN accelerated in response to an increase in atmospheric DMS. Explicitly, the sequential increase in all relevant parameters (including the source rate of condensable vapor, the growth rate of particles, Aitken mode particles, hygroscopicity, and CCN) was pronounced at the DMS-derived NPF and particle growth events. This field study unequivocally demonstrates the previously unconfirmed roles of DMS in the growth of particles into climate-relevant size and eventual CCN activation.

  • Iconicity mediates semantic networks of sound symbolism
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. - : Acoustical Society of America (ASA). - 0001-4966 .- 1520-8524. ; 155:4, s. 2687-2697
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One speech sound can be associated with multiple meanings through iconicity, indexicality, and/or systematicity. It was not until recently that this “pluripotentiality” of sound symbolism attracted serious attention, and it remains uninvestigated how pluripotentiality may arise. In the current study, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, and English speakers rated unfamiliar jewel names on three semantic scales: size, brightness, and hardness. The results showed language-specific and cross-linguistically shared pluripotential sound symbolism. Japanese speakers associated voiced stops with large and dark jewels, whereas Mandarin speakers associated [i] with small and bright jewels. Japanese, Mandarin, and English speakers also associated lip rounding with darkness and softness. These sound-symbolic meanings are unlikely to be obtained through metaphorical or metonymical extension, nor are they reported to colexify. Notably, in a purely semantic network without the mediation of lip rounding, softness can instead be associated with brightness, as illustrated by synesthetic metaphors such as yawaraka-na hizashi /jawaɾakanaçizaɕi/ “a gentle (lit. soft) sunshine” in Japanese. These findings suggest that the semantic networks of sound symbolism may not coincide with those of metaphor or metonymy. The current study summarizes the findings in the form of (phono)semantic maps to facilitate cross-linguistic comparisons of pluripotential sound symbolism.

  • Manufacturing an ultra-low-sulfur CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy by slagging through induction melting with ferroalloys feedstock
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-8388 .- 1873-4669. ; 928, s. 167080-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Commercial ferroalloys are used in the manufacturing of a CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) due to their price advantage and the productivity of the manufacturing process. However, elemental impurities such as sulfur in ferroalloys can undermine the mechanical properties of HEAs. Therefore, the desulfurization behavior of a CoCrFeMnNi HEA using the CaO-MgO-Al2O3 (CAM) slagging method with alumina or magnesia refractories and ferroalloys raw material feedstock was investigated in an induction melting furnace at 1773 K to determine how to control the cleanness of the HEA. The resulting desulfurization ratios of the alloy were approx. 47% when refined by the CaAl2O4-MgAl2O4(CA-MA)-saturated slag in an Al2O3 refractory, whereas 94% when refined by the CaO-MgO(C-M)-saturated slag in a MgO refractory. The overall mass transfer coefficients of sulfur for the HEA refined by the CA-MA- and C-M-saturated slags at 1773 K were ko = 1.4 x 10 6 m/s and ko = 2.0 x 10 6 m/s, respectively, which are lower than the coefficients of iron- and nickel-based alloys at the same experimental conditions. The MnS inclusion particles can precipitate in the mushy zone rather than the liquid region when the solid fraction is close to 1.0, i.e., at the final stage of the solidification. The theoretical radius of MnS increases from 0 to 1.6 mu m when the sulfur content rises from 3 ppm to 60 ppm, according to the hypothesis that the mass transfer of sulfur in the HEA is the rate-controlling step.

  • Hand and Oral Hygiene Practices of South Korean Adolescents Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: JAMA Network Open. - : AMER MEDICAL ASSOC. - 2574-3805. ; 6:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Importance Only a few studies have examined the long-term trends of hand and oral hygiene, especially among adolescents. Objective To investigate the 15-year trends in frequency of handwashing and toothbrushing and examine the factors associated with hand and oral hygiene, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.Design, Setting, and Participants This cross-sectional study, performed from January 1, 2008, to December 31, 2022, used general population-based data from 963 644 individuals in a national representative survey (Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey [KYRBS]).Exposure COVID-19 pandemic.Main Outcomes and Measures Trends in hand and oral hygiene practices were measured by how frequently adolescents washed their hands and whether they fulfilled the recommended guidelines for toothbrushing. An interrupted time series analysis using linear and logistic regression models was performed to assess any associations with the COVID-19 pandemic. Hand and oral hygiene behaviors before and during the pandemic in each sociodemographic subgroup were also compared. Results In the 963 644 adolescents (495 697 [51.4%] male; mean [range] age, 15.01 [12-18] years) who participated in the KYRBS from 2008 to 2022, a 73.3% (95% CI, 59.4%-97.4%; P < .001) immediate increase was seen in overall hand hygiene behavior at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic compared with the prepandemic period, with a sustained decrease thereafter (beta = -0.018; 95% CI, -0.022 to -0.015; P < .001). Meanwhile, no immediate increase was observed in terms of overall oral hygiene behavior (0.1%; 95% CI, -0.9% to 1.1%; P = .82); however, there was a sustained decrease during the pandemic (beta = -0.018; 95% CI, -0.020 to -0.016; P < .001). Older age, female sex, nonsmoking status, alcohol use, low household economic level, and poor school performance were significantly associated with poor hand hygiene during the pandemic. Conclusions and Relevance In this cross-sectional study of South Korean adolescents, an increase in the prevalence of hand hygiene was observed during the early pandemic; however, this prevalence decreased over time. Meanwhile, the decrease in the prevalence of oral hygiene was more pronounced during the pandemic. This study recommends stronger guidelines for adolescent health coaches, such as teachers or public health advisers, regarding hygiene behaviors, even after the COVID-19 pandemic ends.

  • Prenatal and postnatal exposure to antibiotics and risk of food allergy in the offspring: A nationwide birth cohort study in South Korea
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Allergy and Immunology. - : WILEY. - 0905-6157 .- 1399-3038. ; 35:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background There are only preliminary studies examining the associations of postnatal antibiotic exposure with food allergy in childhood, and the effect of antibiotic exposure in utero has not been resolved. Thus, we aimed to investigate the effect of prenatal and postnatal antibiotic exposure on the risk of food allergy in childhood. Methods Using the nationwide birth cohort in South Korea, all 3,163,206 infants (pairing mother; n = 2,322,735) born in South Korea between 2010 and 2017 were included in the analysis. The primary outcome was the diagnosis of food allergy, and the observation period was between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2020. We implemented four different designs for the study, which consisted of a full unmatched cohort, 1:1 propensity-matched cohort, sibling comparison cohort, and health screening cohort along with multiple subgroup analyses. Results During the follow-up period (median 6.92 years [IQR, 4.72-9.00]) of the 3,161,858 infants (52.6% male) in the birth cohort, 29,973 (1.9%) were diagnosed with food allergies. After a 1:1 propensity score matching, the use of antibiotics increased the risk of overall food allergy (prenatal [HR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.04-1.09] and postnatal [HR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.01-1.10] periods). The association was more significantly accentuated when antibiotic exposure was used in the short term, and the children were born preterm or with low birthweight; however, a trimester-specific effect was not observed. We observed more pronounced risks of food allergy in the health screening cohort (prenatal, 17%; postnatal, 15%), thus addressing the adverse effects of critical factors including maternal BMI, smoking status, and type of infant feeding. Similar trends were observed across all four differnt cohorts. Conclusion This study reported a moderate association between early-life antibiotic use and subsequent food allergy during childhood throughout four different designs of analyses. This study suggests that clinicians need to consider the risks and benefits of antibiotics when administering antibiotics to individuals in the prenatal and postnatal periods.

  • Heterogeneous grain size and enhanced hardness by precipitation of the BCC particles in medium entropy Fe-Ni-Cr alloys
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - : Elsevier BV. - 0925-8388 .- 1873-4669. ; 931
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the chemical-composition-dependent precipitation of Cr-rich BCC particles and their role in the hardening of Fe-Cr-Ni medium entropy alloys (MEAs). Three alloys with different chemical compositions: 33Fe-32Cr-35Ni MEA (33Fe), 40Fe-30Cr-30Ni MEA (40Fe), and 45Fe-30Cr-25Ni MEA (45Fe) (at%), were investigated. After annealing at 800 and 950 degrees C, all three alloys had a heterogeneous grain size distribution, except for 40Fe annealed at 950 degrees C. The samples annealed at 800 degrees C showed a more heterogeneous grain size distribution, smaller average grain size, and lower degree of recrystallization than the samples an-nealed at 950 degrees C. This difference is ascribed mainly to the contents and precipitation kinetics of Cr-rich BCC particles at the two temperatures. The hardness decreased with the increase in annealing temperature for all the samples. The 33Fe sample exhibited higher hardness than 40Fe and 45Fe because of the joint effect of grain boundary strengthening and precipitation strengthening by the Cr-rich BCC particles. Different peak -load-dependent hardness behaviors were observed in 33Fe-A80 0 with relatively coarse BCC particles and 40Fe-A80 0 with fine BCC particles. The fine particles led to higher local hardness, whereas coarse particles resulted in higher microhardness owing to the hetero-deformation-induced strengthening effect. These results provide new insights into the strength optimization of medium-and high-entropy alloys through the dispersion of coarse Cr-rich BCC particles.
