  • Anglers' valuation of water regulation dam removal for the restoration of angling conditions at Storsjö-Kapell
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Tourism Economics. - : SAGE Publications. - 1354-8166 .- 2044-0375. ; 14:2, s. 283-296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents results from a choice experiment (CE) study of anglers' valuations of the characteristics of an angling site at Storsjö-Kapell in the Swedish mountain region. In particular, the study presents value estimates of a dam removal and restoration to natural angling conditions. Values of catch, size and species are considered, as are values of bag limits. Also, value estimates are related to a trip frequency model, making it possible to predict visiting frequency under different scenarios. Thus, the model estimates provide a step towards developing dynamic fisheries management models, as the policies analysed may change the age structure of the stock. In addition to empirical results, the paper contributes a derivation of bounds on willingness to pay (WTP) based on the notion that new visitors may have smaller WTP for a change than those already selecting the site for angling

  • Valuation of fishing rights associated with Swedish real estate
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Forest Economics. - : Elsevier. - 1104-6899 .- 1618-1530. ; 30, s. 25-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the economic literature on fisheries there is a long tradition of presenting the role of private property rights in efficient and sustainable fisheries management. We contribute to the literature by analyzing the market value of one of the world's most well defined fishing rights: the ownership of Swedish property where the fishing rights are an inseparable part of the real estate that can be traded in an open market. The fishing rights are primarily used for recreational fishing. For real estate that includes dwellings and vacation homes, the estimated value of these rights is about SEK 60,000 (about 6300), in 2016 prices. This corresponds to 4.5% of the average real estate value. However, the values are heterogeneous, and for real estate with agricultural and/or forestry land the value of the rights is less than SEK 10,000. This could be due to forest owners (as opposed to vacation home owners) primarily view the real estate as a means of generating economic returns, and the potential for this is low for fishing. The valuation of the right is expected to be a determinant of engagement in resource management and is thus important in the development of public policies for both the fish resource and recreational fisheries.

  • Integrated ecological–economic fisheries models—Evaluation, review and challenges for implementation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Fish and Fisheries. - : Wiley. - 1467-2960 .- 1467-2979. ; 19:1, s. 1-29
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Marine ecosystems evolve under many interconnected and area-specific pressures. To fulfil society's intensifying and diversifying needs while ensuring ecologically sustainable development, more effective marine spatial planning and broader-scope management of marine resources is necessary. Integrated ecological–economic fisheries models (IEEFMs) of marine systems are needed to evaluate impacts and sustainability of potential management actions and understand, and anticipate ecological, economic and social dynamics at a range of scales from local to national and regional. To make these models most effective, it is important to determine how model characteristics and methods of communicating results influence the model implementation, the nature of the advice that can be provided and the impact on decisions taken by managers. This article presents a global review and comparative evaluation of 35 IEEFMs applied to marine fisheries and marine ecosystem resources to identify the characteristics that determine their usefulness, effectiveness and implementation. The focus is on fully integrated models that allow for feedbacks between ecological and human processes although not all the models reviewed achieve that. Modellers must invest more time to make models user friendly and to participate in management fora where models and model results can be explained and discussed. Such involvement is beneficial to all parties, leading to improvement of models and more effective implementation of advice, but demands substantial resources which must be built into the governance process. It takes time to develop effective processes for using IEEFMs requiring a long-term commitment to integrating multidisciplinary modelling advice into management decision-making.

  • A cost-benefit analysis of restoring the Em River in Sweden : valuation of angling site characteristics and visitation frequency
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Applied Economics. - : Routledge. - 0003-6846 .- 1466-4283. ; 45:16, s. 2255-2266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article uses Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) to evaluate restoration scenarios aimed at improving angling on the Em River in Sweden. We find that none of the proposed projects are socially profitable when considering only values associated with angling. We rely on a Choice Experiment (CE) to derive utilities and estimate the monetary value of angling site characteristics and then also use the utilities derived in a visitation frequency using a two-stage budgeting approach. The visitation frequency is then used to extract values for fishing license sales and business-related income. The case study illustrates how CBA can provide useful insights into the potential economic returns of environmental restoration projects. Our case study also indicates that the results in terms of Willingness-To-Pay (WTP) and visitation frequency are general findings – i.e. they appear similar across angling sites – which is particularly useful from a policy point of view because it supports the use of benefit transfer for more cost-effective river management.
