  • Inland water quality assessment - A joint European masters programme
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Science Education and Technology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1059-0145 .- 1573-1839. ; 15:5-6, s. 409-415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At present, there is a European shortage of personnel qualified to adequately address the comprehensive scientific and regulatory requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). The joint Masters programme described in this paper will provide students with the requisite expert knowledge and skills to progress the implementation of the WFD. Its development was financially supported by the European Commission because of its specific goal of producing qualified personnel in relation to the implementation of the WFD. Since its proposed structure acknowledges the educational intent of the Bologna Accord, it thereby provides a useful template for structuring a Masters degree-level programme in accordance with Bologna principles.

  • H+-pyrophosphatase of Rhodospirillum rubrum. High yield expression in Escherichia coli and identification of the Cys residues responsible for inactivation my mersalyl
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biological Chemistry. - : American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. - 0021-9258 .- 1083-351X. ; 277:25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • H(+)-translocating pyrophosphatase (H(+)-PPase) of the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum rubrum was expressed in Escherichia coli C43(DE3) cells. Recombinant H(+)-PPase was observed in inner membrane vesicles, where it catalyzed both PP(i) hydrolysis coupled with H(+) transport into the vesicles and PP(i) synthesis. The hydrolytic activity of H(+)-PPase in E. coli vesicles was eight times greater than that in R. rubrum chromatophores but exhibited similar sensitivity to the H(+)-PPase inhibitor, aminomethylenediphosphonate, and insensitivity to the soluble PPase inhibitor, fluoride. Using this expression system, we showed that substitution of Cys(185), Cys(222), or Cys(573) with aliphatic residues had no effect on the activity of H(+)-PPase but decreased its sensitivity to the sulfhydryl modifying reagent, mersalyl. H(+)-PPase lacking all three Cys residues was completely resistant to the effects of mersalyl. Mg(2+) and MgPP(i) protected Cys(185) and Cys(573) from modification by this agent but not Cys(222). Phylogenetic analyses of 23 nonredundant H(+)-PPase sequences led to classification into two subfamilies. One subfamily invariably contains Cys(222) and includes all known K(+)-independent H(+)-PPases, whereas the other incorporates a conserved Cys(573) but lacks Cys(222) and includes all known K(+)-dependent H(+)-PPases. These data suggest a specific link between the incidence of Cys at positions 222 and 573 and the K(+) dependence of H(+)-PPase.

  • Basic Surveillance Network, a European database for surveillance data on infectious diseases
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Euro surveillance : bulletin Europeen sur les maladies transmissibles = European communicable disease bulletin. - : European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC). - 1560-7917. ; 9:7, s. 1-2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Basic Surveillance Network was started in 2000 and is one of the networks on infectious diseases funded by the European Commission. The network collects and makes readily available basic surveillance data on infectious diseases from all the 'old' (pre-2004) European Union member states. The aim is to provide easy access to descriptive data that already exist in national databases, so that it is possible to monitor and compare incidence trends for infectious diseases in the EU member states. The list of diseases covered by the network has recently been expanded from 10 initial 'pilot' diseases to over 40 diseases listed by the EU to be under surveillance. In the near future, the new member states will be invited to participate in the network. Data are case-based and comprise date of onset of disease, age and sex. Only a very short list of disease specific additional variables, such as country of infection or immunisation status, is collected. Classification of cases ( possible, probable, confirmed) is specified according to EU case definitions. The participants of the network have access to an internal web site were all the data is presented in tables and graphs. An open website is available for the public at https://www.eubsn.org./BSN/

  • Implementation of Automation as Distributed Cognition in Knowledge Work Organizations: Six Recommendations for Managers
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Information Systems. - : Association for Information Systems.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Knowledge work organizations are increasingly leveraging automation to enhance and transform their business processes. Many types of automation tools are being deployed in a large variety of information processing tasks, requiring effective management of human-automation cooperation. Yet, conceptual understanding of human-automation hybrid work remains thin and current literature lacks practical recommendations for managers. To address this gap, we synthesize findings from our three earlier case studies with organizations pursuing a wide array of automation tools and examine them through the lens of distributed cognition. We demonstrate how distributed cognition informs about the organizing for human-automation interaction when deploying automation. Our contribution lies in the presentation of six recommendations on three issues: human-automation task allocation, mitigation of the risk of deskilling, and management of collective knowledge across human and automation.
