  • Computing to Change the World for the Better: A Research-Focused Workshop for Women
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proc of Research on Equity & Sustained Participation in Engineering, Computing, and Technology (RESPECT).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women's underrepresentation in Computer Science (CS) can be attributed to various factors including lack of self-efficacy, role models, encouragement, awareness of the discipline and existing research pathways. In February 2019, we hosted a Google-sponsored research-focused workshop at California State University, Long Beach to raise female undergraduates' awareness and confidence in CS research pathways and careers. Forty-six students from several universities in Southern California participated in the workshop. Over the course of three days, students worked on research problems with clear real-world applications in teams led by faculty and assisted by graduate students. Additional sessions were held to inspire female undergraduates, increase their confidence and enrich their knowledge about research and graduate programs. In this paper, we report about our experience and the lessons we learned. We also present evidence of success in strengthening the research interests of our participants based on the results of the pre- and post-surveys that were designed and administered by the evaluators of our funding agency (Google Inc.) to better understand the impact of these workshops.

  • SusAF Welcomes SusApp: Tool Support for the Sustainability Awareness Framework
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Requirements Engineering. - 2332-6441 .- 1090-705X. ; , s. 418-419
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As sustainability increasingly gains attention, it has also found its way into the area of software engineering, with a specific emphasis on requirements engineering. The Sustainability Awareness Framework (SusAF) proposed by Duboc et al. supports stakeholders in taking the long view at their software systems in terms of sustainability. In this paper, we propose SusApp, a web-based tool to simplify the application of the SusAF. In particular, it facilitates the documentation and visualization of effects on sustainability. To learn about the users' perception of SusApp, we conducted two small-scale user studies that investigated the tool's usability and usefulness. Overall, the studies showed that the tool was generally perceived positively by the participants. However, shortcomings in the usability became apparent, which have also impacted the perceived usefulness.

  • Lessons Learned from Developing a Sustainability Awareness Framework for Software Engineering Using Design Science
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology. - 1049-331X .- 1557-7392. ; 33:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To foster a sustainable society within a sustainable environment, we must dramatically reshape our work and consumption activities, most of which are facilitated through software. Yet, most software engineers hardly consider the effects on the sustainability of the IT products and services they deliver. This issue is exacerbated by a lack of methods and tools for this purpose. Despite the practical need for methods and tools that explicitly support consideration of the effects that IT products and services have on the sustainability of their intended environments, such methods and tools remain largely unavailable. Thus, urgent research is needed to understand how to design such tools for the IT community properly. In this article, we describe our experience using design science to create the Sustainability Awareness Framework (SusAF), which supports software engineers in anticipating and mitigating the potential sustainability effects during system development. More specifically, we identify and present the challenges faced during this process. The challenges that we have faced and addressed in the development of the SusAF are likely to be relevant to others who aim to create methods and tools to integrate sustainability analysis into their IT products and services development. Thus, the lessons learned in SusAF development are shared for the benefit of researchers and other professionals who design tools for that end.

  • Integrating Requirements Engineering with Software Development - A Research Abstract
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: ICB Research Reports. - 1860-2770. ; :46
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Software development companies operating in market-driven domains need to deliver new and appealing software products at an increasing rate in order to stay competitive. This requires fast and efficient development of software for which the requirements are based on ever-changing market demands. Agile development claims to achieve increased development efficiency by performing the requirements engineering (RE) activities concurrently with design, planning and testing in an integrated fashion. However, coordination and communication is often reported as a challenge both for agile and for traditional RE practices. Increased insight into the factors affected by integrating RE may allow tailoring the degree of RE integration to suit specific project context, e.g. size, rate of requirements change, domain etc., and thereby support increased efficiency in software development. The aim of this research is to develop methods for assessing the level of RE integration and techniques for improving the integration of requirements. The research is performed in collaboration with industry and the developed methods and techniques will be empirically evaluated in an industrial setting.

  • Assessing Sustainability Impacts ofSystems: SuSAF andtheSDGs
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Communications in Computer and Information Science. - 1865-0929 .- 1865-0937.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) identify key topics where action is required to transform our world towards sustainability. We call for the extensive integration of the SDGs into Software Engineering to support this transformation. This will require the creation of methods and tools for the analysis of software system impacts on the SDGs. To show how this integration might be achieved, we report on a mapping to the SDGs from an existing software sustainability assessment tool, the Sustainability Assessment Framework (SusAF). We find that there is a good mapping between SusAF and the SDGs but that mapping to some specific SDG targets may be dependant on the expertise of the analysts. Mapping of case study systems will be needed for empirical validation.

  • New Frontiers for Requirements Engineering
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IEEE 25th International Requirements Engineering Conference, RE 2017. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781538631911 ; , s. 184-193
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Requirements Engineering (RE) has grown from its humble beginnings to embrace a wide variety of techniques, drawn from many disciplines, and the diversity of tasks currently performed under the label of RE has grown beyond that encom-passed by software development. We briefly review how RE has evolved and observe that RE is now a collection of best practices for pragmatic, outcome-focused critical thinking-A pplicable to any domain. We discuss an alternative perspective on, and de-scription of, the discipline of RE and advocate for the evolution of RE toward a discipline that supports the application of RE prac-tice to any domain. We call upon RE practitioners to proactively engage in alternative domains and call upon researchers that adopt practices from other domains to actively engage with their inspiring domains. For both, we ask that they report upon their experience so that we can continue to expand RE frontiers. © 2017 IEEE.

  • Public policy challenges : An RE perspective
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: CEUR Workshop Proceedings. - : CEUR-WS. ; , s. 24-33
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this perspective paper, we investigate the parallels between public policy and IT projects from the perspective of traditional RE practice. Using the mainstream media as an information source (as would an average citizen), over a period of approximately one year we captured documents that presented analyses of public policy issues. The documents were categorized into eight topic areas, then analyzed to identify patterns that RE practitioners would recognize. We found evidence of policy failures that parallel project failures traceable to requirements engineering problems. Our analysis revealed evidence of bias across all stakeholder groups, similar to the rise of the “beliefs over facts” phenomenon often associated with “fake news”. We also found substantial evidence of unintended consequences due to inadequate problem scoping, terminology definition, domain knowledge, and stakeholder identification and engagement. Further, ideological motivations were found to affect constraint definitions resulting in solution spaces that may approach locally optimal but may not be globally optimal. Public policy addresses societal issues; our analysis supports our conclusion that RE techniques could be utilized to support policy creation and implementation. © 2018 SPIE. All rights reserved.
