  • Growth optimization of AlGaN/GaN HEMT structure on 100 mm SiC substrate : Utilizing bottom-to-top approach
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The structure of high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) based on group-III nitride materials generally consists of three important blocks; a nucleation layer, a semi-insulating (SI) GaN buffer layer, and active layers. In this work, we present an overall growth optimization, which leads to superior crystalline quality and ultra-low thermal boundary resistance (TBR) of a 35-nm AlN nucleation layer, excellent crystalline quality of carbon-doped GaN buffer layer, and high mobility (> 2000 cm2/Vs) of two-dimensional gas (2DEG) in a simple AlGaN/GaN heterostructure grown on a SI SiC substrate.

  • The Swedish CArdioPulmonary BioImage Study : objectives and design
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - : Wiley. - 0954-6820 .- 1365-2796. ; 278:6, s. 645-659
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cardiopulmonary diseases are major causes of death worldwide, but currently recommended strategies for diagnosis and prevention may be outdated because of recent changes in risk factor patterns. The Swedish CArdioPulmonarybioImage Study (SCAPIS) combines the use of new imaging technologies, advances in large-scale 'omics' and epidemiological analyses to extensively characterize a Swedish cohort of 30 000 men and women aged between 50 and 64 years. The information obtained will be used to improve risk prediction of cardiopulmonary diseases and optimize the ability to study disease mechanisms. A comprehensive pilot study in 1111 individuals, which was completed in 2012, demonstrated the feasibility and financial and ethical consequences of SCAPIS. Recruitment to the national, multicentre study has recently started.

  • Water Supplementation Reduces Copeptin and Plasma Glucose in Adults With High Copeptin : The H2O Metabolism Pilot Study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Journal of clinical endocrinology and metabolism. - : The Endocrine Society. - 1945-7197 .- 0021-972X. ; 104:6, s. 1917-1925
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: Because elevated copeptin, a marker of vasopressin, is linked to low water intake and high diabetes risk, we tested the effect of water supplementation on copeptin and fasting glucose.DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-one healthy adults with high copeptin (>10.7 pmol · L-1 in men and >6.1 pmol·L-1 in women) identified in a population-based survey from 2013 to 2015 and with a current 24-hour urine osmolality of >600 mOsm · kg-1 were included.INTERVENTION: Addition of 1.5 L water daily on top of habitual fluid intake for 6 weeks.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Pre- and postintervention fasting plasma copeptin concentrations.RESULTS: Reported mean water intake increased from 0.43 to 1.35 L · d-1 (P < 0.001), with no other observed changes in diet. Median (interquartile range) urine osmolality was reduced from 879 (705, 996) to 384 (319, 502) mOsm · kg-1 (P < 0.001); urine volume increased from 1.06 (0.90, 1.20) to 2.27 (1.52, 2.67) L · d-1 (P < 0.001); and baseline copeptin decreased from 12.9 (7.4, 21.9) pmol · L-1 to 7.8 (4.6;11.3) pmol · L-1 (P < 0.001). Water supplementation reduced fasting plasma glucose from a mean (SD) of 5.94 (0.44) to 5.74 (0.51) (P = 0.04). The water-associated reduction of both fasting copeptin and glucose concentration in plasma was most pronounced in participants in the top tertile of baseline copeptin.CONCLUSIONS: Water supplementation in persons with habitually low water consumption and high copeptin levels is effective in lowering copeptin. It appears a safe and promising intervention with the potential of lowering fasting plasma glucose and thus reducing diabetes risk. Further investigations are warranted to support these findings.

  • KvarkenSat: mission concept and technical overview of a 2U Swedish - Finnish CubeSat
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IAC 2021 Congress Proceedings, 72nd International Astronautical Congress (IAC), Dubai, United Arab Emirates. - : International Astronautical Federation (IAF).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Kvarken Space Centre is a project conducted by a consortium of Finnish and Swedish academic institutions aiming to enhance the economic activities of the Kvarken region shared by the two countries, by improving the regional competence in space technology. In this framework, the consortium is developing a first 2UCubeSat, namely KvarkenSat, with the goal of exhibiting the regional capabilities in satellite developmentvia performing science and in-orbit demonstration of Finnish payloads. Since the main areas of interestare forestry and sea transportation, the CubeSat will integrate a multispectral camera for forest health and seawater quality analysis and an automatic identification system (AIS) receiver for sea vessel tracking. In addition, the spacecraft will perform the in-orbit demonstration of a miniature water-based resistojet thruster system. KvarkenSat’s last payload will comprise a GNSS receiver that will extract raw data inorder to conduct precise point positioning (PPP) algorithm research. This work is meant to present the mission concept, objectives and technical overview of the current design. The launch of KvarkenSat is planned for Q4 2022 from northern Sweden.

  • Lp-PLA2 activity and mass for prediction of incident abdominal aortic aneurysms : A prospective longitudinal cohort study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Atherosclerosis. - : Elsevier BV. - 0021-9150. ; 262, s. 14-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and aims The pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) shares several common pathways with atherosclerosis. Prospective clinical plasma biomarker studies in AAA have been hampered by the need for very large cohorts and long follow-up time. Methods We analyzed a prospective longitudinal cohort of middle-aged individuals from the cardiovascular cohort of the Malmö Diet and Cancer study (n = 5551; 1991-94). The plasma biomarkers lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2 activity and mass), proneurotensin and C-reactive protein, and conventional risk factors at baseline were measured in patients with incident AAA during follow-up, and compared to individuals without a diagnosis of AAA. Subjects were followed until December 31st, 2013. Multivariable analyses were expressed in terms of hazard ratios (HR) per 1 standard deviation increment of each respective log-transformed plasma biomarker in the Cox proportional hazard models. Results Cumulative incidence of AAA was 1.5% (men 2.9%, women 0.5%) during a median follow-up period of 20.7 years. Overall, 84 individuals had an incident AAA, of whom 22 (26.2%) were operated on and 16 (19.0%) had ruptured. Mean age of individuals with incident AAA was 59.7 years at study entry and AAA was diagnosed on average 14 years later. When adjusting for age, gender, smoking, body mass index, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus, Lp-PLA2 activity (HR 1.40; 95% CI 1.15–1.72) and Lp-PLA2 mass (HR 1.23; 95% CI 1.00–1.51) were independently associated with incident AAA. Conclusions The plasma biomarkers Lp-PLA2 activity and mass were markers of AAA risk and this implies that AAA is an athero-thrombotic related disease.

  • Carotid intima-media thickness is associated with incidence of hospitalized atrial fibrillation.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Atherosclerosis. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-1484 .- 0021-9150. ; 233:2, s. 673-678
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is a measure of arterial thickening and a risk predictor for myocardial infarction and stroke. It is unclear whether IMT also predicts atrial fibrillation (AF). We explored the association between IMT and incidence of first AF hospitalization in a population-based cohort.

  • Red blood cell distribution width is associated with incidence of atrial fibrillation.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - : Wiley. - 1365-2796 .- 0954-6820. ; 275:1, s. 84-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Red blood cell distribution width (RDW), a measure of variation in erythrocyte volume, has been associated with several cardiovascular disorders, but the relationship with atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unclear. We investigated the association between RDW and incidence of first hospitalization due to AF in a population-based cohort.

  • Response to Letter to the Editor 'Red cell distribution width in patients with atrial fibrillation'
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - : Wiley. - 1365-2796 .- 0954-6820. ; 275:5, s. 544-544
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • RDW is a new and easily available risk marker for adverse cardiovascular outcomes and we agree that this may encourage a wider use in clinical practice. As pointed out by Balta et al [2], the underlying causal links are unclear. The causal links could hypothetically involve some of the factors mentioned by Balta et al [2], but also properties of the red cells per se. This article is protected by copyright.
