  • Bibliometric analysis of two subdomains in philosophy: free will and sorites
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scientometrics. - : Springer Netherlands. - 0138-9130 .- 1588-2861. ; 103:1, s. 47-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study we tested the fruitfulness of advanced bibliometric methods for mapping subdomains in philosophy. The development of the number of publications on free will and sorites, the two subdomains treated in the study, over time was studied. We applied the cocitation approach to map the most cited publications, authors and journals, and we mapped frequently occurring terms, using a term co-occurrence approach. Both subdomains show a strong increase of publications in Web of Science. When we decomposed the publications by faculty, we could see an increase of free will publications also in social sciences, medicine and natural sciences. The multidisciplinary character of free will research was reflected in the cocitation analysis and in the term co-occurrence analysis: we found clusters/groups of cocited publications, authors and journals, and of co-occurring terms, representing philosophy as well as non-philosophical fields, such as neuroscience and physics. The corresponding analyses of sorites publications displayed a structure consisting of research themes rather than fields. All in all, both philosophers involved in this study acknowledge the validity of the various networks presented. Bibliometric mapping appears to provide an interesting tool for describing the cognitive orientation of a research field, not only in the natural and life sciences but also in philosophy, which this study shows.

  • The Sutherland tradition in criminology : a bibliometric story
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Criminal justice studies. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 1478-601X .- 1478-6028. ; 26:1, s. 1-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we provide an overview of the body of knowledge associated with the Sutherland tradition in criminology. We track Sutherland's impact through a bibliometric analysis of papers citing any of Sutherland's works and by focusing on publications that are co-cited with Sutherland. This approach enables us to visualize Sutherland's role in relation to the forerunners and founding fathers of criminology during his own active period, to his followers, and to contemporary scholars. The dataset consisted of 2596 genuine articles that cite at least one of Sutherland's publications, in which he appears as first author in Web of Science TM published between 1955 and 2010. The results show a clear impact of the Sutherland tradition more or less throughout the twentieth century, peaking during the 1930s and 1940s and decreasing in the 1990s, when the Sutherland tradition was more powerfully challenged, primarily by the life-course tradition.

  • The first mover and the challenger : The relationship between two journals in organization research
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Scientometrics. - 0138-9130 .- 1588-2861. ; 40:3, s. 445-453
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many new journals are started in response to increasing specialization and limited space in existing journals. In this study two journals in organization research are studied,Administrative Science Quarterly as the first mover in the field andOrganization Studies as the challenger. It is shown that the new journal gradually differ from the old in terms of the national origin of its authors as well as the documents cited. It is concluded that the scientific journal market may not mirror the copy-cat behaviour found among newspapers or companies in other markets.

  • Corpus Linguistics in Sweden : Pioneers and their context
  • 2019
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This volume presents findings from research on the development of corpus linguistics in Sweden as a scientific innovation. It begins with a presentation of the early international development of corpus linguistics as well as the institutional and disciplinary conditions for research on the subject in Sweden, followed by accounts of the first generations of Swedish innovators. External funding and international development were important for these pioneers, alongside the fact that established professors in language departments seem to have been relatively open to the new ideas. The criticism levelled against corpus linguistics appears instead to have come mainly from departments of general linguistics. In the course of time, this negative attitude has diminished and corpora have become an almost indispensable tool in linguistic research. Developments in Sweden are placed in an international perspective by means of an analysis of the publication database SciVerse Scopus for 1970−1999. It shows a research field in two well-defined clusters: corpus builders and corpus users, the former often with a background in language studies, the latter evincing considerable representation of psychologists and scholars of cognitive science with an interest in language acquisition and language loss. Evidence of the significance of international developments for scientific innovation is provided by an analysis of the development of professional organizations on both sides of the Atlantic.

  • The development of IB as a scientific field
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Business Review. - : Elsevier. - 0969-5931 .- 1873-6149. ; 27:5, s. 1080-1088
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • International business (IB) is today an established field in business studies with two professional associations and numerous academic publications. However, it is much younger than many other fields in the management area. Although economists were focusing on international issues even before, it was not until after the Second World War that IB started to emerge as a scientific field. The purpose of this paper is to analyse this development from the early days up to the present time. In so doing, using a theoretical framework, it focuses on the organizing of the field, i.e. how early informal contacts eventually led to the formation of formal organizations, the launching of journals, and with the passage of time the publishing of handbooks. The paper provides empirical evidence of all these steps. In this way it presents data on significant contributions to the field.

  • The Emergence of the Business Network Approach
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Extending the Business Network Approach. - Basingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137537638 - 9781137537652 ; , s. 21-38
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Relationships between commercial actors have existed for thousands of years as highlighted by Hadjikhani and LaPlaca (2013) and Hadjikhani in the final chapter of this volume. However, research on relationships between business actors, often summarised under headings such as industrial marketing or B2B, has a more recent origin. In the words of Hadjikhani and LaPlaca (2013: 294), relationship research ‘existed in society but had little scientific identity or inquiry’. This is even truer for research on wider relationship systems, that is, business networks. However, as will be demonstrated in the present volume, the situation in the beginning of the twenty-first century is quite different. Research on business networks is lively and manifested by a large number of publications. A search for ‘business networks’ in the databases SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI and A&HCI for all years until 2015 (with the restriction that the journals publishing the papers should be classified in the Subject Category ‘Business & Economics’ in all 156 journals) resulted in 553 hits, with the first papers published in 1992. Publications then did not accelerate until the early twenty-first century with an all-time high in 2012 of 70 hits, and somewhat lower figures in the following years. However, it should be noted that the 2015 figures merely refer to the first part of the year (Fig. 2.1) and will increase.

  • Bibliometric Study of Academic Interaction: IT, Organization, and Change
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: AMCIS 2009 Proceedings. - : AMCIS (Americas Conference on Information Systems). - 9781615675814
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the degree and nature of the research interaction between the academic fields of Information Technology, Organization, and Organizational Change. This is done so as to see if, and how, the highly digitized modern business world is reflected in related research. The paper analyses 9.669 articles published in 1995-2006 that are derived from major journals within each field. Then the articles are reviewed through the use of the bibliometric methods: frequency, cross-reference, co-citation, shared references, and network analyses. The findings detect a dearth of consistent research interaction between the fields of Information Technology, Organization, and Organizational Change. This fact is critiqued on the basis of previous practical and academic calls for interactional research. The paper provides important insights about the degree and nature of the research interaction and, in addition, recommendations and guidelines for future cross-fertilization between the academic fields are provided.
