  • Reactivity of Diesel Soot from 6- and 8-Cylinder Heavy-Duty Engines

    • Increasing concern for air pollution together with the introduction of new types of fuels pose new challenges to the exhaust aftertreatment system for heavy-duty (HD) vehicles. For diesel-powered engines, emissions of particulate matter (PM) is one of the main drawbacks due to its effect on health. To mitigate the tailpipe emissions of PM, heavy-duty vehicles are since Euro V equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The accumulation of particles causes flow restriction resulting in fuel penalties and decreased vehicle performance. Understanding the properties of PM produced during engine operation is important for the development and optimized control of the DPF. This study has focused on assessing the reactivity of the PM by measuring the oxidation kinetics of the carbonaceous fraction. PM was sampled from two different heavy-duty engines during various test cycles. The heavy-duty engines were 6- and 8-cylinder direct injection diesel engines rated at 550 and 650 hp respectively. Reaction kinetics of the samples and characteristic oxidation temperatures were assessed by the non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) employing a multiple-ramp rates method in a 10% oxygen atmosphere. The oxidation of the diesel soot was compared with a model soot, Printex-U, and values were compared with the existing literature. The calculated activation energies range between 114.8 and 155.8 kJ/mol for diesel soot as well as the Printex-U samples indicating similar reactivity despite differences in engine configuration, fuel chemistry or, aging.

    • The internal energy distribution of ammonia formed in the dissociative recombination (DR) of NH4+ with electrons has been studied by an imaging technique at the ion storage ring CRYRING. The DR process resulted in the formation of NH3 + H (0.90 ± 0.01), with minor contributions from channels producing NH2 + H2 (0.05 ± 0.01) and NH2 + 2H (0.04 ± 0.02). The formed NH3 molecules were highly internally excited, with a mean rovibrational energy of 3.3 ± 0.4 eV, which corresponds to 70% of the energy released in the neutralization process. The internal energy distribution was semiquantitatively reproduced by ab initio direct dynamics simulations, and the calculations suggested that the NH3 molecules are highly vibrationally excited while rotational excitation is limited. The high internal excitation and the translational energy of NH3 and H will influence their subsequent reactivity, an aspect that should be taken into account when developing detailed models of the interstellar medium and ammonia-containing plasmas.

  • Applying polygenic risk scoring for psychiatric disorders to a large family with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder

    • Psychiatric disorders are thought to have a complex genetic pathology consisting of interplay of common and rare variation. Traditionally, pedigrees are used to shed light on the latter only, while here we discuss the application of polygenic risk scores to also highlight patterns of common genetic risk. We analyze polygenic risk scores for psychiatric disorders in a large pedigree (n ~ 260) in which 30% of family members suffer from major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder. Studying patterns of assortative mating and anticipation, it appears increased polygenic risk is contributed by affected individuals who married into the family, resulting in an increasing genetic risk over generations. This may explain the observation of anticipation in mood disorders, whereby onset is earlier and the severity increases over the generations of a family. Joint analyses of rare and common variation may be a powerful way to understand the familial genetics of psychiatric disorders.

    • Dissociative recombination (DR) of the water cluster ion D+(D2O)(2) has been studied at the heavy-ion storage ring CRYRING (Manne Siegbahn Laboratory, Stockholm University). Cluster ions were injected into the ring and accelerated to an energy of 2.28 MeV. The stored ion beam was merged with an almost monoenergetic electron beam, and neutral fragments produced by DR were detected by an energy-sensitive surface barrier detector. The first experimental determinations of the absolute DR cross section and branching ratios for a cluster ion are reported. The cross section for the process D+(D2O)(2)+e(-) is large and reaches 6.10(-12) cm(2) at a low center-of-mass collision energy of 0.001 eV. The cross section has an E-1.19+/-0.02 dependence in the energy range 0.001-0.0052 eV, and a steeper slope with an E-1.70+/-0.12 dependence for E=0.052-0.324 eV. The general trends are similar to the results for previously studied molecular ions, but the cross section is higher in absolute numbers for the cluster ion. Thermal rate coefficients for electron temperatures of 50-2000 K are deduced from the cross section data and the rate coefficients are consequently also large. Branching ratios for the product channels are determined with a grid technique. Break-up into 2D(2)O+D is the dominating dissociation channel with a probability of 0.94+/-0.04. The channel resulting in the fragments D2O+OD+D-2 has a probability of 0.04+/-0.02, and the probability for formation of D3O+D2O is 0.02+/-0.03. The results are compared with data for molecular ions, and the cluster dissociation dynamics are discussed.

  • Activity level and balance in subjects with mild Alzheimer's disease

    • To clarify if Alzheimer’s disease has an impact on activity level and postural control, we examined 17 elderly diagnosed with mild Alzheimer’s disease (MMSE scores 21–29) and 18 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (MMSE scores 27–30) using the Frenchay Activities Index, Bergs Balance Scale, Timed Up & Go and Walking in a Figure of Eight. Mild AD subjects were less active and had lower scores on Bergs Balance Scale, performed Timed Up & Go in longer time and took more steps outside the Figure of Eight, as compared to healthy elderly. This study shows that motor performance is affected already at mild stages of Alzheimer’s disease and also that functional performance other than gait may also be impaired.

    • The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of cognition on motor function using 2 simple everyday tasks, talking and walking, in younger subjects with Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment. A second aim was to evaluate reliability for the dual-task test Talking While Walking. Walking speed during single and dual task and time change between single and dual task were compared between groups. The test procedure was repeated after 1 week. Subjects with AD had lower walking speed and greater time change between single and dual task compared with healthy controls. Reliability for Talking While Walking was very good. The results show that motor function in combination with a cognitive task, as well as motor function alone, influences subjects with Alzheimer’s disease in a negative way and that decreased walking speed during single- and dual-task performance may be an early symptom in Alzheimer’s disease.

    • Basic mobility, balance, gait and dual-task performance were characterised in 140 consecutive subjects referred to a multidisciplinary university hospital in a geriatric setting for cognitive symptoms and possible dementia. After completion of an extensive diagnostic evaluation, subjects were classified into four diagnostic categories: no cognitive impairment, mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other dementia. Mean age was 57 ± 9.2, 60 ± 7.3, 68 ± 9.9 and 64 ± 10.5, respectively. Data on motor function, medication use and presence of white matter changes were evaluated and compared between the diagnostic groups. Motor function seems to be affected in very mild AD but not in mild cognitive impairment, as assessed with performance-based tests. AD subjects were slowed and had difficulties in dual-task performance requiring concurrently performing a cognitive task while walking.
