  • Speciation in the aqueous H+/H2VO4–/H2O2/phosphate system
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: DALTON TRANSACTIONS. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1477-9226 .- 1477-9234. ; 22, s. 3658-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The speciation in the aqueous H+/H2VO4- /phosphate (dihydrogen phosphate, P) and H+/H2VO4/H2O2/P systems has been determined in the physiological medium of 0.150 M Na(Cl) at 25 degrees C. A combination of multinuclear NMR integral and chemical shift (Bruker AMX500) as well as potentiometric data (glass electrode) have been collected and treated simultaneously by the computer program LAKE. The pK(a)-values for phosphoric acid have been determined by potentiometric and P-31 NMR chemical shift data, and have been found to be 1.85 +/- 0.02, 6.69 +/- 0.02 and 11.58 +/- 0.07. The errors given are 3 sigma. Altogether nine vanadate phosphate species have been found in the ternary H+/H2VO4-/P- system in the PH region 1-11, with the following compositions: VP, VP2 and V14P. Equilibrium is very slow in acidic solutions, requiring more than 3 months for the formation of V14P species. On the other hand, less than 15 min are needed for equilibration at neutral and alkaline pH. In the H+/H2VO4-/H2O2/P- system, four new species have been found in addition to all binary and ternary complexes. They are of VXP and VX2P compositions, where X denotes the peroxo ligand. V-51 and P-31 NMR chemical shifts, compositions and formation constants are given, and equilibrium conditions are illustrated in distribution diagrams as well as the fit of the model to the experimental data. Biological and medical relevance of the species is also discussed and physiological conditions are modelled.

  • Speciation in the aqueous H+/H2VO4–/H2O2/picolinate system relevant to diabetes research
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Dalton Transactions. - Cambridge : Royal Society of Chemistry, Thomas Graham House. - 1477-9226 .- 1477-9234. ; :3, s. 421-428
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A detailed study of the quaternary aqueous H+/H2VO4−/H2O2/picolinate (Pi−) system has been performed at 25 °C in 0.150 M Na(Cl) medium using quantitative 51V NMR (500 MHz) and potentiometric data (glass electrode). In the ternary H+/H2VO4−/Pi− system, six complexes have been found in the pH region 1–10. In the quaternary H+/H2VO4−/H2O2/Pi−system, eight additional complexes have been found. Generally, equilibria are fast in both systems. The rate of peroxide decomposition depends on the species in solution. Chemical shifts, compositions and formation constants for the species are given. Equilibrium conditions and the fit of the model to the experimental data are illustrated in distribution diagrams. Possible formation of mixed ligand species with imidazole, lactic acid and citric acid have been investigated and ruled out under the same experimental conditions. Structural proposals are given, based on 13C NMR data and available crystal structures.

  • Speciation in vanadium bioinorganic systems 6. Speciation study of aqueous peroxovanadates, including complexes with imidazole
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry. ; 80:1-2, s. 51-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a combination of potentiometry (glass electrode) and quantitative 51V NMR spectroscopy, the full speciation in the vanadate–peroxide and vanadate–peroxide–imidazole systems was determined in the pH range 1–10 (0.150 M Na(Cl) medium, 25 °C). Using the computer program LAKE, the pKa value of imidazole and the formation constants for 10 peroxovanadate species and also for three more species where a single imidazole moiety is also bound, have been calculated. The experimental data show a good fit to the calculated speciation model, even for the less abundant species. The species are either monomeric or dimeric in vanadium, and four resonances of the dimeric species have been unambiguously assigned via 2D 51V NMR. Diperoxovanadates are the favoured species at pH 2–10, when sufficient peroxide is present. Imidazole is found to bind strongly to them at pH 6–9. The equilibrium conditions are illustrated in distribution diagrams.

  • On the Nature of VV Species in Hydrophilic Ionic Liquids: A Spectroscopic Approach
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry. - : Wiley. - 1434-1948 .- 1099-1948 .- 1099-0682. ; :34, s. 5373-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heteronuclear NMR experiments, in particular 51V, wereperformed with the aim to elucidate the nature of vanadates and peroxovanadates in hydrophilic ionic liquids (i.e., [bmim][BF4], [bmim][TfO] and [bdmim][BF4]). The data so far reported clearly indicate that ionic liquids have a strong influence on the solution chemistry of vanadate in water both for the formation of the aggregates (with and without H2O2) and for the rate of peroxide consumption catalyzed by vanadium. In BF4- containing ionic liquids, formation of vanadate-fluoride adducts is suggested. The obtained results are also discussed in the light of the reactivity data of peroxovanadates in ionic liquids.

  • Sodium trirubidium metavanadate monohydrate
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Acta Crystallographica Section E. - : International Union of Crystallography. - 1600-5368. ; E59:11, s. i151-i153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The title compound, sodium trirubidium metavanadate monohydrate, NaRb3(VO3)4(H2O), crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma. The structure, which represents a rare type of catena-vanadate, is built up of strongly folded chains of corner-sharing [VO4] tetrahedra, running in the [010] direction with a periodicity of four. A three-dimensional framework is obtained by sodium ions linking adjacent chains in the [001] direction and by rubidium ions linking adjacent chains in the [100] direction. The single water molecule binds to the sodium ion and to two rubidium ions.

  • A follow-up study of welders’ exposure to vibration in a heavy engineering production workshop
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Low Frequency Noise Vibration and Active Control. - : Sage Publications. - 0263-0923 .- 1461-3484 .- 2048-4046. ; 29:1, s. 33-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Manual work involving vibrating power tools is associated with symptoms that include vascular, neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. This study examines the vibration exposure of welders to determine the change between 1987 and 2008. Vibration measurements on handheld tools were used to evaluate the acceleration and the daily exposure time was determined by subjective rating. From these data, the 8-hour equivalent vibration exposure A(8), has been calculated. During the period, the A(8) decreased from 3.9 m/s2 to 1.9 m/s2. It was concluded that this decrease is the result of fewer vibrating tools and a decrease in daily exposure time. Although the daily vibration exposure has decreased over the study time, for some welders the daily vibration exposure A(8) is still above the action value set by the EU directive on vibration. This means more effort should be spent to decrease vibration exposure.

  • Exposure to whole-body vibration in open-cast mines in the Barents region
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Circumpolar Health. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1239-9736 .- 2242-3982. ; 75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: We aimed to measure and evaluate whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure among drivers of mining vehicles in the Barents region.STUDY DESIGN: In the period from November 2012 to August 2014, this cross-sectional study was carried out at 3 mines in Finland, Norway and Sweden as part of the MineHealth project.METHODS: Measurements of WBV were conducted on the surface of the driver's seat during normal work in accordance with international standards. Personal data on daily exposure times were collected by a questionnaire.RESULTS: Measurements were conducted on 95 different mining vehicles both as root mean square (RMS) value and vibration dose value (VDV) representing different manufacturers, models and capacities. Of the 453 miners who answered the questionnaire, 232 indicated that they were exposed to WBV during their working day. The results show that the mean daily exposure time varies between 1.9 and 6.7 h for different vehicles. The calculated mean A(8) could be found in an interval between 0.2 and 1.0 m/s(2) and the corresponding 8-h VDV fell between 7 and 17 m/s(1.75).CONCLUSIONS: Exposure to WBV among operators of mining vehicles may be a serious health and safety problem in the mines studied. The employers ought, therefore, take active steps to reduce exposure in accordance with the European vibration directive. Moreover, since some groups of drivers are exposed to vibration that is close to or exceeds the exposure limit values, the employer should take immediate action to reduce exposure below these values.

  • Musculoskeletal symptoms and exposure to whole-body vibration among open-pit mine workers in the arctic
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health. - : Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine. - 1232-1087 .- 1896-494X. ; 30:4, s. 553-564
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: This cross-sectional questionnaire study was carried out at 4 open-pit mines in Finland, Norway, Russia and Sweden as part of the MineHealth project. The aim has been to compare the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms between drivers of mining vehicles and non-drivers. Material and Methods: The mine workers were asked whether they had suffered from any musculoskeletal symptoms during the previous 12 months in specified body regions, and to grade the severity of these symptoms during the past month. They were also asked about their daily driving of mining vehicles. Results: The questionnaire was completed by 1323 workers (757 vehicle drivers) and the reported prevalence and severity of symptoms were highest for the lower back, followed by pain in the neck, shoulder and upper back. Drivers in the Nordic mines reported fewer symptoms than non-drivers, while for Russian mine workers the results were the opposite of that. The daily driving of mining vehicles had no significant association with the risk of symptoms. Female drivers indicated a higher prevalence of symptoms as compared to male drivers. Conclusions: The study provided only weak support for the hypothesis that drivers of vehicles reported a higher prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms than non-vehicle drivers. There were marked differences in the prevalence of symptoms among workers in various enterprises, even though the nature of the job tasks was similar.

  • Thermal perception thresholds among workers in a cold climate
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health. - : Springer. - 0340-0131 .- 1432-1246. ; 90:7, s. 645-652
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: To investigate whether exposure to cold could influence the thermal perception thresholds in a working population.METHODS: This cross-sectional study was comprised of 251 males and females and was carried out at two mines in the northern part of Norway and Sweden. The testing included a baseline questionnaire, a clinical examination and measurements of thermal perception thresholds, on both hands, the index (Digit 2) and little (Digit 5) fingers, for heat and cold.RESULTS: The thermal perception thresholds were affected by age, gender and test site. The thresholds were impaired by experiences of frostbite in the fingers and the use of medication that potentially could affect neurosensory functions. No differences were found between the calculated normative values for these workers and those in other comparative investigations conducted in warmer climates.CONCLUSIONS: The study provided no support for the hypothesis that living and working in cold climate will lead to impaired thermal perception thresholds. Exposure to cold that had caused localized damage in the form of frostbite was shown to lead to impaired thermal perception.
