    • Context-aware applications and services require ubiquitous access to context information about the users or sensors such as preferences, spatial & environmental data, available connectivity, and device capabilities. Systems for the brokering or the provisioning of context data via wireless networks do so with centralized servers or by employing protocols that do not scale well with real-time distribution capabilities. In other cases, such as the extending of presence systems, the data models are limited in expressive capabilities and consequently incur unnecessary signaling overhead. This paper presents a distributed protocol, the Distributed Context eXchange Protocol (DCXP), and an architecture for the real-time distribution of context information to ubiquitous mobile services: We present the architecture and its principle operation in a sample ubiquitous mobile awareness service. Preliminary results indicate that our approach scales well for the ubiquitous provision of context data in real-time to clients on the Internet via 3G wireless systems. Performed measurements show that DCXP can reduce the time to process context data with a factor of 20 compared to similar approaches.

    • Mobile telecommunication is evolving rapidly. People no longer only communicate with each other regardless of time and place, but also share other information that is important for tasks with which they are involved. In response to this growing trend the MediaSense framework addresses the intelligent delivery of any information to any host, anywhere, based on context-aware information regarding personal preferences, presence information, and sensor values. This includes another challenge to achieve seamless delivery, especially of multimedia content, and multimodal services via heterogeneous connections.

    • Autoimmune Addison's disease (AAD) is the most common cause of primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI). Despite its exceptionally high heritability, tools to estimate disease susceptibility in individual patients are lacking. We hypothesized that polygenic risk score (PRS) for AAD could help investigate PAI pathogenesis in pediatric patients.We here constructed and evaluated a PRS for AAD in 1223 seropositive cases and 4097 controls. To test its clinical utility, we reevaluated 18 pediatric patients, whose whole genome we also sequenced. We next explored the individual PRS in more than 120 seronegative patients with idiopathic PAI.The genetic susceptibility to AAD-quantified using PRS-was on average 1.5 standard deviations (SD) higher in patients compared with healthy controls (p<2e-16), and 1.2 SD higher in the young patients compared with the old (p=3e-4). Using the novel PRS, we searched for pediatric patients with strikingly low AAD susceptibility and identified cases of monogenic PAI, previously misdiagnosed as AAD. By stratifying seronegative adult patients by autoimmune comorbidities and disease duration we could delineate subgroups of PRS suggesting various disease etiologies.The PRS performed well for case-control differentiation and susceptibility estimation in individual patients. Remarkably, a PRS for AAD holds promise as a means to detect disease etiologies other than autoimmunity.

  • Methods and Tool Support for Analyzing Architectural Models of Embedded Systems

    • Embedded systems are ubiquitous in the modern world. They are microcomputers most often included incomplete devices consisting of software and hardware. Embedded systems range from small devices to large systems monitoring and controlling complex processes. Design and development of such systems is a complex task, since embedded systems often need to fulfill extra-functional requirements, on top of functional ones, within constrained amounts of platform resources. Some embedded systems are mission critical; hence, they are not allowed to fail during the mission. One way to ensure that a system works in accordance to its specification is to define the system in an Architecture Description Language (ADL) and apply formal verification methods. The Architecture Design and Analysis Language (AADL) has become popular in the avionic and automobile industry, and is equipped with several annexes, among them the Behavior Annex. However, AADL still misses a formal semantics, which prevents the possibility to prove correctness of architecture features by performing model checking on AADL models. Moreover, AADL does not support time annotations, which prevents modeling of real-time systems in AADL.In this thesis, we address these issues by presenting a formal analysis framework including a denotationalsemantics for a subset of the AADL and its Behavior Annex, which evaluates properties defined in Computation Tree Logic (CTL) by providing model checking. Model checking is a formal verification method that has proved to be powerful as well as effective. Our AADL-semantics is supported by a tool with an implementation of the semantics in Standard ML, which in turn is encapsulated in an Eclipse plugin.We also present a time annotation extension of AADL, implemented in a tool translating time annotated AADL and its Behavior Annex into the Timed Abstract State Machine (TASM) for simulation of real-time features. Another closely related problem is how to achieve optimal component distribution; in order to address this issue we have developed a tool that perform near-optional component distribution in regard to a series of parameters.The research results, which have been validated thought case studies, provides the possibility for a system engineer to model a system and prove its correctness. The research has been conducted in the context of the PROGRESS research center, for predictable embedded software systems.

  • Baltics Left of Bang : the Role of NATO with Partners in Denial-Based Deterrence

    • The North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s military contribution to deter Russian aggression in the Baltic region should begin with an overall strategic concept that seamlessly transitions from deterrence through countering Russia’s gray zone activities and onto conventional war, only if necessary. NATO should augment its ongoing program to enhance the denial-based deterrence for the region with threats of punishment that demonstrate to Russian leaders they cannot achieve their aims at acceptable costs. Rather than forward-position military forces in the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania), NATO should consider keeping forces further back to take advantage of strategic depth to limit vulnerability to Russian attack and increase operational flexibility. To support the overall denial-based deterrence concept, the Baltics must commit wholeheartedly to the concept of total defense including significant increases to their active and reserves forces.

  • Aquaporins in yeasts and filamentous fungi

    • Recently, genome sequences from different fungi have become available. This information reveals that yeasts and filamentous fungi possess up to five aquaporins. Functional analyses have mainly been performed in budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which has two orthodox aquaporins and two aquaglyceroporins. Whereas Aqy1 is a spore-specific water channel, Aqy2 is only expressed in proliferating cells and controlled by osmotic signals. Fungal aquaglyceroporins often have long, poorly conserved terminal extensions and differ in the otherwise highly conserved NPA motifs, being NPX and NXA respectively. Three subgroups can be distinguished. Fps1-like proteins seem to be restricted to yeasts. Fps1, the osmogated glycerol export channel in S. cerevisiae, plays a central role in osmoregulation and determination of intracellular glycerol levels. Sequences important for gating have been identified within its termini. Another type of aquaglyceroporin, resembling S. cerevisiae Yfl054, has a long N-terminal extension and its physiological role is currently unknown. The third group of aquaglyceroporins, only found in filamentous fungi, have extensions of variable size. Taken together, yeasts and filamentous fungi are a fruitful resource to study the function, evolution, role and regulation of aquaporins, and the possibility to compare orthologous sequences from a large number of different organisms facilitates functional and structural studies
