  • Genomic evidence for the Pleistocene and recent population history of Native Americans
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 349:6250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Howand when the Americas were populated remains contentious. Using ancient and modern genome-wide data, we found that the ancestors of all present-day Native Americans, including Athabascans and Amerindians, entered the Americas as a single migration wave from Siberia no earlier than 23 thousand years ago (ka) and after no more than an 8000-year isolation period in Beringia. After their arrival to the Americas, ancestral Native Americans diversified into two basal genetic branches around 13 ka, one that is now dispersed across North and South America and the other restricted to North America. Subsequent gene flow resulted in some Native Americans sharing ancestry with present-day East Asians (including Siberians) and, more distantly, Australo-Melanesians. Putative "Paleoamerican" relict populations, including the historical Mexican Pericues and South American Fuego-Patagonians, are not directly related to modern Australo-Melanesians as suggested by the Paleoamerican Model.

  • Broadband dielectric response and grain-size effect in K0.5Na0.5NbO3 ceramics
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 107:1, s. 14111-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dielectric spectra of two K0.5Na0.5NbO3 ceramics with different grain sizes (10 and 0.5 mu m) were measured from 10(2) to 10(14) Hz in a broad temperature range. The sequence of first-order phase transitions (cubic-tetragonal-orthorhombic-rhombohedral) was detected by differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric spectroscopy, and time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. The grain size affects all the phase transitions, which are more smeared in the small-grain sample. In the large-grain ceramics, two well-separated near-Debye relaxations are seen in the tetragonal phase, which suddenly merge on cooling across the tetragonal-orthorhombic transition, and on further cooling the lower-frequency relaxation strongly broadens. On reducing the grain size, the higher-frequency relaxation shifts from similar to 1 to similar to 20 GHz and the lower-frequency one strongly broadens. Without quantitative understanding, these effects could be assigned to domain-wall dynamics and its temperature and grain-size dependences. Similar to pure KNbO3, an overlapped central-mode-soft-mode type excitation was detected in the terahertz range related to the effective hopping and oscillations of the off-centered Nb ions in a multiwell potential.

  • Ferroelectric properties of dense nanocrystalline BaTiO3 ceramics
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 15:9, s. 1113-1117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dense BaTiO3 ceramics with 50 nm average grain size obtained by spark plasma sintering were investigated. The dielectric data show a broad ferro-para phase transition with a maximum permittivity of approximate to1100 at 390 K and 1 kHz. The local ferroelectric switching behaviour was investigated by piezoresponse force microscopy. Typical piezoelectric hysteresis loops were recorded at different positions of the sample. The present results provide experimental evidence for polarization switching at the local scale, indicating that the critical grain size for the disappearance of ferroelectric behaviour in dense, bulk BaTiO3 nanocrystalline ceramics is below 50 nm.

  • Raman and AFM piezoresponse study of dense BaTiO3 nanocrystalline ceramics
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of the European Ceramic Society. - : Elsevier BV. - 0955-2219 .- 1873-619X. ; 25:12, s. 3059-3062
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dense nanocrystalline BaTiO3 (BT) ceramics with grain sizes (GSs) below 100 nm obtained by spark plasma sintering (SPS), were investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy in order to obtain information about the changes in the local order induced by size effects. The obtained spectra in the range 80-700 K showed the presence of all the crystalline phases of BaTiO3, even in the finest structure (50 nm grain size ceramic), with particularities attributed to the high density of non-ferroelectric grain boundaries. The AFM piezoresponse study incontestably proved the ferroelectric switching at local scale in nanocrystalline BaTiO3 ceramics at room temperature.

  • Magnetodielectric effect and optic soft mode behaviour in quantum paraelectric EuTiO3 ceramics
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Europhysics letters. - : IOP Publishing. - 0295-5075 .- 1286-4854. ; 80:2, s. 27002-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Infrared reflectivity and time-domain terahertz transmission spectra of EuTiO3 ceramics revealed a polar optic phonon at 6-300K whose softening is fully responsible for the recently observed quantum paraelectric behaviour. Even if our EuTiO3 ceramics show lower permittivity than the single crystal due to a reduced density and/ or small amount of secondary pyrochlore Eu2Ti2O7 phase, we confirmed a magnetic field dependence of the permittivity, also slightly smaller than in single crystal. An attempt to reveal the soft phonon dependence at 1.8K on the magnetic field up to 13T remained below the accuracy of our infrared reflectivity experiment.

  • Grain boundary and size effect on the dielectric, infrared and Raman response of SrTiO3 nanograin ceramics
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Ferroelectrics (Print). - : Informa UK Limited. - 0015-0193 .- 1563-5112. ; 363, s. 227-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recently revealed giant grain size effect on dielectric properties in undoped SrTiO3 ceramics (J. Petzelt et al., J. Phys.: Con dens. Matter 19, 196222 (2007) and references therein), was extended to smaller grains of 80 nm mean grain size. Like for previously studied ceramics with larger grain size, in addition to dielectric permittivity also the infrared and Raman responses were studied and discussed. It was shown that the reduced effective permittivity is fully accounted for by the infrared soft mode behaviour and, similar to single crystals and other ceramics studied, no dielectric dispersion appears below the THz frequency range. The rather universal (independent of the grain size and sintering process) double dead layer structure was proposed to be responsible for the observed changes in the infrared and Raman spectra, allowing the grain core to keep the single crystal dielectric function. The outer dead layer shell (obviously charged due to an oxygen deficit) is very thin (similar to 1 nm) having frequency and temperature independent low permittivity (similar to 10) and is responsible for the static permittivity suppression. The inner layer of only slightly distorted perovskite structure is polar with local polarization normal to grain boundaries gradually decreasing towards the grain centre. This polarization and/or the thickness of the polar layers, which compensate the charged grain boundaries, appear to increase on decreasing temperature, particularly below the structural phase transition. Its nature is still not fully understood. In agreement with our previous suggestions, from the Raman data it con be also concluded that in the low-temperature tetragonal phase of all SrTiO3 ceramics, the local tetragonal axes tend perpendicular to the grain boundaries and the tetragonality is strongly reduced compared to single crystals.
