  • Evolution of a Course : Instructional Design Elements and Impacts
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: UBT International Conference. - Pristina, Kosovo : UBT Knowledge Center. - 9789951437691
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the 2017 Spring semester, international educators from Sweden and the United States collaborated on delivery of an Information Systems, Analysis, Design and Modeling graduate course at the University for Business and Technology (UBT) in Kosovo. In the Spring of 2018, the team taught course was offered a second time, with both graduate and undergraduate students. In the first year, student work focused on the conceptual design of a UBT Knowledge Center ecosystem, using Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) co-design tools. The Spring 2018 course built upon and expanded this work through more granular exploration of possible local systems designs for making local knowledge discoverable, employing SSM and emphasizing Informed Learning to foster an enriched exploration of the topic. Differences between the pedagogical course design and student experience reflections will be explored in this paper to highlight the impact of ‘flipped classroom’ teaching and cross- disciplinary/cross-degree group work, within the larger context of systems thinking educational efficacy.

  • An Analysis of Social Collaboration and Networking Tools in eLearning
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Learning and Collaboration Technologies. LCT 2016. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319394824 ; , s. 332-343
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many online learning websites and learning management systems (LMS) provide social collaboration and networking tools to aid learning and to interact with peers for knowledge sharing. The benefit of collaborating with each other is certainly undeniable, such tools, however, can be a distraction from the actual tasks for learners. The paper presents a study on social media tools supported by various eLearning systems to understand the impact on students learning activities. A survey questionnaire is designed for this purpose. The data is collected from students who have had experience using different massive open online course (MOOC) eLearning platforms and LMS from various universities. The results of the survey indicate that more than 95 % of the participants use at least one of the social tools in their daily life activities, and almost 84 % of them have used these tools in connection with the eLearning systems. It is also interesting to note that 92 % of the participants intend to use social tools for study purposes. The results indicate that there is a need to integrate more of these social media tools into eLearning systems.

  • Sentiment Analysis of Students’ Feedback with NLP and Deep Learning : A Systematic Mapping Study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Applied Sciences. - Switzerland : MDPI. - 2076-3417. ; 11:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last decade, sentiment analysis has been widely applied in many domains, including business, social networks and education. Particularly in the education domain, where dealing with and processing students’ opinions is a complicated task due to the nature of the language used by students and the large volume of information, the application of sentiment analysis is growing yet remains challenging. Several literature reviews reveal the state of the application of sentiment analysis in this domain from different perspectives and contexts. However, the body of literature is lacking a review that systematically classifies the research and results of the application of natural language processing (NLP), deep learning (DL), and machine learning (ML) solutions for sentiment analysis in the education domain. In this article, we present the results of a systematic mapping study to structure the published information available. We used a stepwise PRISMA framework to guide the search process and searched for studies conducted between 2015 and 2020 in the electronic research databases of the scientific literature. We identified 92 relevant studies out of 612 that were initially found on the sentiment analysis of students’ feedback in learning platform environments. The mapping results showed that, despite the identified challenges, the field is rapidly growing, especially regarding the application of DL, which is the most recent trend. We identified various aspects that need to be considered in order to contribute to the maturity of research and development in the field. Among these aspects, we highlighted the need of having structured datasets, standardized solutions and increased focus on emotional expression and detection.

  • The development and implementation of a PhD Program in ICT for the Kosovo Education System
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 9th International Conference Information Systems and Technology Innovation: Smart economy and digital transformation, Tirana, Albania, May 17-18, 2019.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite ever accelerating workplace changes, including rapidly expanding technological access and fast improving information and communication systems, the education system in Kosovo is not fully developed enough to provide a high-quality research-based education in Information and Communication Technology. Coping simultaneously with varied national priorities, Kosovo – a small country with 2 million inhabitants and a national budget of only 2.3 billion – lacks the needed investments to fundamentally transform the quality of the education system. A funded ICT doctoral program would address today’s workforce priorities and requirements. The design and delivery of a national PhD program in ICT is crucial for Kosovo in order to ensure competitive readiness within the regional education systems and national economies of the West Balkans - and beyond. This paper argues the need for PhD programs and offers insights into a proposed project, the aim of which is to put Kosovo on the map by offering a PhD in the ICT field.

  • Evaluating learners' emotional states by monitoring brain waves for comparing game-based learning approach to pen-and-paper
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE FRONTIERS IN EDUCATION CONFERENCE (FIE 2019). - : IEEE. - 9781728117461 ; , s. 1-8
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new interest in the use of game factors while acquiring new knowledge has emerged, and a number of researchers are investigating the effectiveness of the game-based approach in education systems. Recent research in game-based learning suggests that this approach imparts learning by involving learners in the learning process. The game factors generate affective-cognitive reactions that absorb users in playing the game and positively influence the learning. This paper offers a comparison of the learning processes between the game based learning and pen-and-paper approaches. In this paper the analysis of both learning approaches is realized through a brain controlled technology, using the Emotiv EEG Tech headset, by analyzing the stress, excitement, relaxation, focus, interest, and engagement that the learner is experiencing while going through both approaches.

  • User behaviour analysis on LMS and MOOC
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: 2015 IEEE Conference on  e-Learning, e-Management and e-Services (IC3e). - : IEEE. - 9781467394376 - 9781467394369 ; , s. 21-26
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents results of a subjective experiment of user behaviour analysis on state-of-the-art learning management systems (LMS) and massive open online courses (MOOCs). The purpose of this study is to conduct a usability analysis on different eLearning platforms by observing subjects facial expressions, and based on the generated results to speculate which of the platforms are easy to use and work with for a new user. An experiment is designed for this purpose with different tasks that each subject has to perform, while they are being recorded. The facial recordings are analysed to find seven emotional engagement attributes and three sentiment engagement attributes using facial expression software. The results of our work show some very interesting findings. Additionally we have also proposed some recommendations based on an extensive comparison of features among different LMS that will provide better content personalization and customization, thereby improving learning outcome.

  • The National Research School in ICT : The challenges to adapt the Swedish model in Kosovo context
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Conference on new Achievements in Science, Technology and Arts, ICNA-STA, Peje, Kosovo, 14th-15th April 2022.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of research in national development is crucial when it comes to creation and dissemination of knowledge. The initiative of establishing a Swedish National Research School model in Kosovo motivated the research community to strengthen the national research by supporting the institution to increase the research capacities and triggering the idea of establishing research institutes and PhD programs in the niche fields of ICT domain through an EU funded project, entitled: Development and Implementation of PhD ICT in Kosovo Education Systems. The establishment of the Nordic influenced National Research School (NRS) in Kosovo, phased a number of challenges, especially when it comes to the physical and cultural constrains of Kosovo society and how the education system operates. Today, the NRS in Kosovo in proposed to be installed in one of the three models generated as a result of EU funded project. Model C, operating as a virtual collaboration among universities that are affiliate in the school by sharing the pool of research experts and its research infrastructure. Model B is similar to Model C, but the virtual collaboration is among the research Institutes as part of the Universities. Whereas, Model A operates as a National Institute (National Research Hub) established as part of Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MESTI), similar to four running Institutes that MESTI currently has.
