  • Testing the Effect of Relative Pollen Productivity on the REVEALS Model : A Validated Reconstruction of Europe-Wide Holocene Vegetation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Land. - : MDPI. - 2073-445X. ; 12:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reliable quantitative vegetation reconstructions for Europe during the Holocene are crucial to improving our understanding of landscape dynamics, making it possible to assess the past effects of environmental variables and land-use change on ecosystems and biodiversity, and mitigating their effects in the future. We present here the most spatially extensive and temporally continuous pollen-based reconstructions of plant cover in Europe (at a spatial resolution of 1 degrees x 1 degrees) over the Holocene (last 11.7 ka BP) using the 'Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites' (REVEALS) model. This study has three main aims. First, to present the most accurate and reliable generation of REVEALS reconstructions across Europe so far. This has been achieved by including a larger number of pollen records compared to former analyses, in particular from the Mediterranean area. Second, to discuss methodological issues in the quantification of past land cover by using alternative datasets of relative pollen productivities (RPPs), one of the key input parameters of REVEALS, to test model sensitivity. Finally, to validate our reconstructions with the global forest change dataset. The results suggest that the RPPs.st1 (31 taxa) dataset is best suited to producing regional vegetation cover estimates for Europe. These reconstructions offer a long-term perspective providing unique possibilities to explore spatial-temporal changes in past land cover and biodiversity.

  • Adjustable ECR Ion Source Control System: Ion Source Hydrogen Positive Project
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. - 0018-9499. ; 62:3, s. 903-910
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ISHP (Ion Source Hydrogen Positive) project consists of a highly versatile ECR type ion source. It has been built for several purposes, on the one hand, to serve as a workbench to test accelerator related technologies and validate in-house made developments, at the first stages. On the other hand, to design an ion source valid as the first step in an actual LINAC. Since this paper is focused on the control system of ISHP, besides the ion source, all the hardware and its control architecture is presented. Nowadays the ion source is able to generate a pulse of positive ions of Hydrogen from 2 mu s to a few range with a repetition rate ranging from 1 Hz to 50 Hz with a maximum of 45 mA of current. Furthermore, the first experiments with White Rabbit (WR) synchronization system are presented.

  • Quality of survival and cognitive performance in children treated for medulloblastoma in the PNET 4 randomized controlled trial
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Neuro-Oncology Practice. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2054-2577 .- 2054-2585. ; 4:3, s. 161-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. The relationship between direct assessments of cognitive performance and questionnaires assessing quality of survival (QoS) is reported to be weak-to-nonexistent. Conversely, the associations between questionnaires evaluating distinct domains of QoS tend to be strong. This pattern remains understudied. Methods. In the HIT-SIOP PNET4 randomized controlled trial, cognitive assessments, including Full Scale, Verbal and Performance IQ, Working Memory, and Processing Speed, were undertaken in 137 survivors of standard-risk medulloblastoma from 4 European countries. QoS questionnaires, including self-reports and/or parent reports of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF), the Health Utilities Index, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, were completed for 151 survivors. Correlations among direct cognitive assessments, QoS questionnaires, and clinical data were examined in participants with both assessments available (n = 86). Results. Correlations between direct measures of cognitive performance and QoS questionnaires were weak, except for moderate correlations between the BRIEF Metacognition Index (parent report) and working memory (r = .32) and between health status (self-report) and cognitive outcomes (r = .35-.44). Correlations among QoS questionnaires were moderate to strong both for parent and self-report (r = .39-.76). Principal Component Analysis demonstrated that questionnaires and cognitive assessments loaded on 2 separate factors. Conclusions. We hypothesize that the strong correlations among QoS questionnaires is partially attributable to the positive/negative polarity of all questions on the questionnaires, coupled with the relative absence of diseasespecific questions. These factors may be influenced by respondents' personality and emotional characteristics, unlike direct assessments of cognitive functioning, and should be taken into account in clinical trials.

  • Haemorheological result in a large multicentre study of claudicants treated with ketanserin
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Clinical Hemorheology. - New York, USA : Pergamon Press. - 0271-5198. ; 10, s. 321-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract  An international, multi-centre trial was carried out to test the haemorheological effects of ketanserin, a serotonin antagonist, after treatment of intermittent claudicants for 1 year. Haematological indices, whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity and red cell and white cell     filterabi1ity were measured using standardised techniques. Even so, inter-laboratory variability, and intra-laboratory changes in control values in some centres over the 1 year period proved to be major obstacles. The pooled data showed no evidence of haemorheological changes, although data from the single largest centre indicated slightly lowered haematocrit and blood and plasma viscosity. Any rheological effects of serotonin antagonists in intermittent claudicants are probably small and unlikely to be the main source of any clinical efficacy. In general, it would appear that standardisation and monitoring of laboratory techniques must be strictly carried out if there is to be any hope of successfully carrying out multi-centre haemorheological trials. .  Key words: Blood Rheology; Claudication; Serotonin Antagonists;

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 6th International Beam Instrumentation Conference, IBIC 2017. - 9783954501922 ; , s. 8-15
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Spallation Source, now under construction in Lund, Sweden, aims to be the world's most powerful pulsed neutron scattering facility. Driving the neutron source is a 5 MW superconducting proton linear accelerator operating at 4 percent beam duty factor and 14 Hz repetition rate. Nineteen partner institutions from across Europe are working with the Accelerator Division in Lund to design and construct the accelerator. The suite of accelerator instrumentation consists of over 20 unique system types developed by over 20 partners and collaborators. Although the organizational complexity presents challenges, it also provides the vast capabilities required to achieve the technical goals. At this time, the beam instrumentation team is in transition, completing the design phase while scaling up to the deployment phase. Commissioning of the ion source has commenced in Catania, preparations for installation on the Lund site are ramping up, and basic R&D on target instrumentation continues. Beam commissioning results from the systems immediately following the ion source will be presented, along with technical highlights and status of the many remaining instrumentation systems.

  • Intel Stratix 10 FPGA design for track reconstruction for the ATLAS experiment at the HL-LHC
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1748-0221. ; 18:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fast reconstruction of charged particle tracks with high efficiency and track quality is an essential part of the online data selection for the ATLAS experiment at the High Luminosity LHC. Dedicated custom designed hardware boards and software simulations have been developed to assess the feasibility of a Hardware Tracking Trigger (HTT) system. The Pattern Recognition Mezzanine (PRM), as part of the HTT system, has been designed to recognize track candidates in silicon detectors with Associative Memory ASICs and to select and reconstruct tracks using linearized algorithms implemented in an Intel Stratix 10 MX FPGA. The highly parallelized FPGA design makes extensive use of the integrated High-Bandwidth-Memory.In this paper, the FPGA design for the PRM board is presented. Its functionalities have been verified in both simulations and hardware tests on an Intel Stratix 10 MX development kit.

  • Gestures in Performance
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Musical Gestures. - : Taylor and Francis. ; , s. 36-68
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • On occasion, one can observe a whole orchestra section moving and playing in unison. In such an instance, all violinists play the melody using the same type of bowing movements and lean forward in unison at a given time during a specific passage in the music. Thus, not only do the musicians use very similar movements to produce the same notes but they sometimes also coordinate bodily sways or other movements with the other players. The musical gesture seems to manifest itself in both sound and movement. Whether we are watching as audience, or participating and interacting in the actual performance itself, we receive a considerable amount of gestural information. The aim of this chapter is to give examples of gestures that may be observed during performance, and to consider the kind of information they might convey, either to other performers or to the audience.

  • Real-Time Semantic Stereo Matching
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. ; , s. 10780-10787
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scene understanding is paramount in robotics, self-navigation, augmented reality, and many other fields. To fully accomplish this task, an autonomous agent has to infer the 3D structure of the sensed scene (to know where it looks at) and its content (to know what it sees). To tackle the two tasks, deep neural networks trained to infer semantic segmentation and depth from stereo images are often the preferred choices. Specifically, Semantic Stereo Matching can be tackled by either standalone models trained for the two tasks independently or joint end-to-end architectures. Nonetheless, as proposed so far, both solutions are inefficient because requiring two forward passes in the former case or due to the complexity of a single network in the latter, although jointly tackling both tasks is usually beneficial in terms of accuracy. In this paper, we propose a single compact and lightweight architecture for real-time semantic stereo matching. Our framework relies on coarse-to-fine estimations in a multi-stage fashion, allowing: i) very fast inference even on embedded devices, with marginal drops in accuracy, compared to state-of-the-art networks, ii) trade accuracy for speed, according to the specific application requirements. Experimental results on high-end GPUs as well as on an embedded Jetson TX2 confirm the superiority of semantic stereo matching compared to standalone tasks and highlight the versatility of our framework on any hardware and for any application.
