  • Analyzing the Cross-National Comparability of Party Positions on the Socio-Cultural and EU Dimensions in Europe.
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Political Science Research and Methods. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 2049-8470 .- 2049-8489. ; 10:2, s. 408-418
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using survey vignettes and scaling techniques, we estimate common socio-cultural and European integration dimensions for political parties across the member states of the European Union. Previous research shows that party placements on the economic left-right dimension are cross-nationally comparable across the EU; however, the socio-cultural dimension is more complex, with different issues forming the core of the dimension in different countries. The 2014 wave of the Chapel Hill Expert Survey included anchoring vignettes which we use as “bridge votes” to place parties from different countries on a common liberal/authoritarian dimension and a separate common scale for European integration. We estimate the dimensions using the Bayesian Aldrich–McKelvey technique. The resulting scales offer cross-nationally comparable, interval-level measures of a party's socio-cultural and EU ideological positions.

  • Anchoring the Experts: Using Vignettes to Compare Party Ideology Across Countries
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Research and Politics. - : SAGE Publications. - 2053-1680. ; 1:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Expert surveys are a valuable, commonly used instrument to measure party positions. Some critics question the cross-national comparability of these measures, though, suggesting that experts may lack a common anchor for fundamental concepts such as economic left–right. Using anchoring vignettes in the 2010 Chapel Hill Expert Survey, we examine the extent of cross-national difference in expert ideological placements. We find limited evidence of cross-national differences; on the whole, our findings further establish expert surveys as a rigorous instrument for measuring party positions in a cross-national context.

  • Mapping Europe’s Party Systems: which parties are the most right-wing and left-wing in Europe?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The London School of Economics and Political Science European Politics and Policy Blog: 14 May 2015.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • ithin individual countries there is usually a good understanding of how parties differ from one another on economic issues, but how do parties in different European countries compare? Would Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats lie to the right of Mariano Rajoy’s People’s Party in Spain? Is the British Labour Party to the left of other centre-left parties in Europe? Based on data from expert surveys, Ryan Bakker, Seth Jolly and Jonathan Polk map the left/right positions of political parties from 14 eastern and western European countries. They write that while this comparison gives a good indication of party competition across Europe, future research will also allow for European parties to be compared on non-economic dimensions and with parties in other parts of the world such as North America.

  • Measuring party positions in Europe: The Chapel Hill expert survey trend file, 1999–2010
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Party Politics. - : SAGE Publications. - 1354-0688 .- 1460-3683. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports on the 2010 Chapel Hill expert surveys (CHES) and introduces the CHES trend file, which contains measures of national party positioning on European integration, ideology and several European Union (EU) and non-EU policies for 1999-2010. We examine the reliability of expert judgments and cross-validate the 2010 CHES data with data from the Comparative Manifesto Project and the 2009 Eur- opean Elections Studies survey, and explore basic trends on party positioning since 1999. The dataset is available at the CHES website.

  • Multidimensional incongruence and vote switching in Europe
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Public Choice. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0048-5829 .- 1573-7101. ; 176:1-2, Special Issue: SI, s. 267-296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2018 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature Does ideological incongruence hurt parties in elections? Research on the representational relationship between parties and voters suggests that ideological congruence can boost a party’s electoral prospects. However, while the mechanism is at the individual-level, most of the literature focuses on the party-level. In this article, we develop a set of hypotheses based on a multi-issue conception of party-voter congruence at the individual-level, and examine the electoral consequences of these varying congruence levels in the 2014 European Parliament elections. Consistent with our expectations, comparative analysis finds that ideological and issue-specific incongruence is a significant factor in voting behavior in the European Parliament elections. Although the substantive effects of incongruence are understandably small compared to partisanship, government, or EU performance evaluations, party-voter disagreement consistently matters, and voters’ issue salience is an important moderator of the impact of incongruence on vote choice.

  • Multidimensional incongruence, political disaffection, and support for anti-establishment parties
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of European Public Policy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1350-1763 .- 1466-4429. ; 27:2, s. 292-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To what extent do representational gaps between parties and voters destabilise party systems and create electoral opportunities for anti-establishment parties on the left and right? In this paper, we use multiple measures of party- partisan incongruence to evaluate whether issue-level incongruence contributes to an increase of political disaffection and anti-establishment politics. For this analysis, we use data from the Chapel Hill Expert Survey (CHES) for party positions and public opinion data from the European Election Study (EES). Our findings indicate that multidimensional incongruence is associated with disaffection at the national and European level, and that disaffected mainstream party voters are in turn more likely to consider voting for anti-establishment challenger parties. This finding suggests that perceived gaps in party-citizen substantive representation have important electoral ramifications across European democracies.

  • The European Common Space: Extending the Use of Anchoring Vignettes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Politics. - : University of Chicago Press. - 0022-3816 .- 1468-2508. ; 76:4, s. 1089-1101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we combine advances in both survey research and scaling techniques to estimate a common dimension for political parties across the member states of the European Union. Most previous scholarship has either ignored or assumed cross-national comparability of party placements across a variety of dimensions. The 2010 wave of the Chapel Hill Expert Survey includes anchoring vignettes which we use as "bridge votes'' to place parties from different countries on a common space. We estimate our dimensions using the "blackbox'' technique. Our results demonstrate both the usefulness of anchoring vignettes and the broad applicability of the blackbox scaling routine. Further, the resulting scale offers a cross-nationally comparable interval-level measure of a party's left/right ideological position with a high degree of face validity. In short, we argue that the left/right economic dimension travels well across European countries.

  • The Swedish European elections will be held in the shadow of September’s national election, but European issues will play a key role
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: LSE EUROPP blogg. ; April 8th, 2014
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sweden will not only hold European elections in May, but will also hold national, regional and municipal elections in September. Linda Berg and Jonathan Polk write on the effect this ‘super-election’ year will have on the vote for the European Parliament. They note that while the two largest parties, the Social Democrats and Moderates, will likely have one eye on the national elections, European issues will nevertheless play a substantial role in the campaign.
